Hello ladies! I am currently pregnant again with a little boy and I am having a hard time picking out a name. I've searched online a million times, but nothing seems to sound right. Can you offer some suggestions? I don't want it to be an extremely common name where every other boy has the same name as him.... but any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
Thank you all so much for the suggestions. There were some pretty good ones in there. Although I haven't decided yet; I will let you all know in a few months what his name is! Thanks again! :)

I can give you advice on what to avoid, if you find that helpful. I'm a teacher and I see lots of names!
Avoid goofy or 'unique' spellings of names. The name will be pronounced incorrectly. It will be spelled incorrectly. The kid will go through school constantly saying "it's JAXON" not "Jackson".
Avoid the super trendy. What looks and sounds really cool now might not be so great at the header of a resume or as an older man. A name that is so so chic and unique might just sound flat out ridiculous in 20-30 years.

I know this may sound kind of weird but look back to your year books. Names that were popular then arent very popular now. Jason, Brian, Joseph, David. Yea they seem kind of common to us because we grew up with a bunch of them but in my sons whole preschool (ages 3-5) there is not one of any of those names! I personally love the name Jesse. You can also find names in the bible. And not just the popular ones!
Good luck

Congratulations on your upcoming new arrival! And picking the name is so fun yet so frustrating, huh? When I was pregnant both times we didn't know the sex so we had a million names for both it seemed. However, some of the boys' names we particularly liked were Brennor and Sawyer (because Lost is my hubby favorite show; corny but true). I also really liked Teague because I saw it in a document my grandfather prepared about our ancestors. Teague something or other was the first immigrant on my grandmother's side a few hundred years ago. My hubby and I like old traditional names.

What about Jonathan or would you rather keep it simple, like Troy? I have some friends who've got a son named RACE and another named Spencer. I have a very special nephew named LUKE.
Another simple one that you don't hear all that often is Bret. Good luck

My father passed away during my second pregnancy. When I found out that I was having a girl I had to find out a way to name her after my father, he did not have a middle name however his first and last initials were K & C so her name is Kacy Rachelle. My husband pulled Rachelle out of his head.

My husband and I could not decide on a name together. We came to an agreement that if the baby was a boy he would pick his name and if a baby girl I was to pick her name. I lost, we had a boy. My son wanted to name him after a gentleman that he worked with that he thought very highly of. Therefore, my sons name is Marshal and there has not been anyone that he has gone to school with that has had the same name as he does. Marshal is now a Junior in High School.

check out the social security website-- it has the top 100 names for each year. you'd be surprised that aiden is one of the top names... it feels like an unusual name... but apparently everyone felt that way! :) anyway we almost named our son jacob samuel but decided not to because it was one of the top 10 names of the year, and we didn't want him to be one of 3-4 in his class at school, you know? so his name is jeremiah, which is familiar but not common. so people recognize the name and know how to pronounce it, but it's not so common that he has 10 friends with the same name. we got good name ideas from a family pedigree chart, that's how we named our daughter.
we all have songs, so that's a fun idea too. jeremiah was a bullfrog.... jonny be good... little liza jane... find a song about a name, and go with it.

Hi A.,
Congrats on baby #2. What a great idea to ask other moms what names they like. You'll more than likely get a lot more creative ideas than just looking in a baby book. I have 3 girls, so I never have considered boy names too much. However, I'll let you know what I like. I've always thought the name Raymond was a very strong and manly name. I think calling a little boy Ray would be so cute. It's kind of like naming a child Samuel, and calling him Sam, except not as crazy popular. I also just had a girlfriend name her son Cameron. I think it's cute, and not too popular. I also have always thought Brody and Cooper are cute, and kind of unique too. Good luck with the name seach. I think it's much easier to choose girls names than boy names. :)

Now, I have seen some boys named Tristan at school and sport activities. But I still like the name anyway. I don't see other kids have the same name as Layne except one girl at school. I wish I had put my maiden name in my boys' middle names because their last names is same as my ex's. They have nothing to carry my family name. When I had my youngest dd almost 6 years ago, DH and I had a hard time picking out names. Neither of us wanted a popular name but we didn't want one that people would make comments about either.
I went to the SSA Popular Baby Name site (http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/) and printed out the top 1000 baby girl names for the previous year. I then went through and grouped the names that were the same but different spellings. I gave a copy to DH and we both went through and marked the names we really liked. The first time through, there was nothing that we had marked the same. I reprinted the list and then we went through them again and picked names that we liked and those that we would consider. Upon checking through DH's list, I saw he had the named Taryn marked. I must have skimmed over that name every time because it had never jumped out at me before he marked it on his. We ended up naming our dd Taryn Elizabeth. I had never heard the name Taryn before. I am seeing the name more and more but it isn't an overly popular name (I did meet another Taryn Elizabeth and a lady who has a niece named Taryn Elizabeth).
I didn't keep a copy of our lists that we marked and wish I would have. I have the baby name book that my DH marked up when I was pregnant with my oldest (I didn't mark any names because I only wanted one name and that was what we used) so my oldest DD can see what names she might have had. I have nothing to show my youngest.
Almost a year after I had Taryn, my nephew and his wife had a boy who they named Torin Jacob. It took me a while to get used to that name but I like it and haven't met any other Torins.
This past summer my nephew's kids were visiting (nephew is now divorced and his kids live in Puerto Rico). For some reason, my brother (nephew's father) kept mixing up Taryn and Torin's names and calling them by the wrong name. :)

Hi A.,
Congrats on being pregnant with another little guy!
I haven't read all the responses, so apologies if this is a duplicate. My two sons are Benjamin Richard (husband is Richard) and Philip Alexander. We liked the idea of Bible names. I personally like names that leave no doubt as to the child's gender, and that can be easily pronounced (I substitute teach and am ALWAYS stumbling over some child's name).
You could also consider George, Edward, Leon, Carl, Charles, and Daniel--they don't seem to be too common now (but check those lists!). I have always liked David, Michael, Jonathan, Mark and John as well.
Good luck and have fun!

I had the same problem when I found out we were having a girl for our second. I searched online and couldn't find anything that I liked. So I went to the library and checked out a book of 1001 baby names. This really helped me as I was able to keep it with me and when ever we were in the car or had some down time I would pull it out and write down some ideas. As far as boy names I always like Aiden (he is on a soap I watch - AMC - I only watch one!! ha ha) The other option is that I hear "old" names are coming back. Jackson, Polly, Evelyn - so maybe searching through your family tree might help as well. Good luck!! It took me up until my last trimester to pick one, but once I found it I knew!!

My uncle Gary had recently passed away in a car crash, and my hubby's best friend, Ray had passed away from heart disease. So we took "Gary" and "Ray" and came up with "Gray". Ethan Gray!
It's a combination of family, friendship, and love.
Not to mention, my hubby has 7 children. With alphabetical names, and "G" was next in line. LOL

A., I know it's been days since you submitted your request so you probably have hundreds of responses by now! Naming your baby is such a personal and permanent (!) thing that everyone has an opinion...so here's my story, hope it helps!
I OBSESSED over my children's names. We decided my son's middle name would be Douglas so he could be named after his father without being a Jr. From there it narrowed down our options significantly, but he was still 2 days old before he had a permanent name. The portrait lady pressured me into picking one for the hospital's website so I did and knew immediately that it was wrong....thank God it wasn't on the birth certificate yet!
Anyway, he is Gavin Douglas and it is so perfect! I love that there isn't really any opportunity for a unpleasant nickname, and it's short enough I don't need a nickname for him at all. It's also great for both a boy and a man. I'd never heard it before I named him but since then I have come across a few others, one in our church (they chose his name because they liked my son's so much) and one in his preschool.
Some of my son's friends are;
Tobias (Toby)
Jalen
Braden
Zachary
Owen
Caeden
Jacob
Desmond
Connor

Unusual boys names that are not becoming common are harder to come by than girls unfortunately. We struggled with trying to find a uncommon boys name while had no problem finding an unusal girls name for his older sister. We personally went with an older name paired with his great grandfathers name. (Both of our children have the middle names of a grandfather or great grandfather.)We looked at many names and here are just a few that I have heard that don't seem to be too popular as of yet.

Obviously a first name should flow well with your last name and be sure not to create any acronym's with initials that could cause him to be teased later in life. Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck with your name search. I'm sure you'll find the perfect name for your little one. :)

I like the name Joel. It's easy to spell, easy to remember, people know right away it's a boy (I have a hard time with names that girls and boys have these days: Logan, Taylor, etc.), and there's probably not going to be another one in his class.
And it goes well with a lot of middle names, ones you might bring in from another family member.
My son Joel is now an adult, and his name has served him very well. And contrary to what people said when he was born, NO ONE has ever called him Joe or Joey! -- Well, one exception was the summer he worked in the Parks Department - one of the guys called him Joe. But other that than, he's always been Joel.
Good luck!

Once your baby is here, whatever you name him, you will come to love. Names from the Bible are especially nice, Isaac, Isaiah, Elijah.
Try not to discuss it with friends and relatives, everyone knows someone with the names and will tell stories of what so and so did and then you won't want that name. It's really distracting. Choose the name and keep it to yourself until he is born.

Hi A.,
It doesn't look like I will be having anymore children (I have 2 -- 1 of each), but if we did, we have thought we would name them after their Grandparents (Ronald & Rosella & Olin & Myra). A boy would be Rolin Austen (Austen was my Grandma's maiden name) & a girl would be Myranda Rose. I think naming them after family members is a good idea, especially if you can come up with different variations so they can be unique. I only wish I would have thought of that before my two were born. (Hannah Joy & Ethan Matthew)

We always had a girl's name decided upon, but it was a little harder to come up with a boy's name. We were like you and didn't want anything too unusual, but wanted something that you don't hear very often right now. Our son ended up being named Vincent Thomas. "Vincent" just came to us after we started talking about various "V" names (Victor, Victoria for a girl, etc.). We had a friend named "Vince" in college, so I think that helped the decision. "Thomas" is after my husband's father. We really didn't have any other boy's names we agreed upon, and we're thinking about getting pregnant this year, so we may be in your boat again, soon! Well, my husband was - lord help me - seriously interested in the middle name Tyrannosaurus. Don't get me started.
We decided the name Wyeth was a better compromise and wouldn't get him looked at funny during a college admission board meeting. Samuel Wyeth will do just fine now. But I will admit, when he's ten years old, Tyrannosaurus would have made him the coolest kid on the block.

If you are looking for really unusual names, go through a list of athletes! For some reason, there always seems to be a plethora of them in the sports arena! lol Also, consider a longer more common name that you could shorten into one you liked. I knew a guy who's name was Lincoln but he went by Linc. Also, try looking through the Bible or other unusual places like that for ideas.
I have a few suggestions:
Cole, Austin, Mason, Dean
I wish you the very best!! It is so exciting to be having a baby boy!!

We had a hard time deciding on a boy name for our son born last year. We named him Liam Patrick (Patrick after daddy). The others we liked were Landon, Shane, & Aiden (although Aiden ended up being #1 in popularity last year).

Some of the less popular names I have heard are: Deacon, Bracey, Hayden, Parker, Brennan, Mason, Brody, Dayson, and Brayton. My youngest was named after our Dr. (Craton) using the last name but changing the spelling. (Creighton) If you find a name you sort of like you could change the ending or beginning to fit your taste. (i.e. Mason to Dayson.) I think one of the best sources for names is the Bible. (Malachi, Micah, Solomon) Don't look in the back of the Bible...just open the old testament and look for the lineage pages, some are REALLY strange but there are some that are sensible as well. Hope this helps. Congratulations on the upcoming birth! P.S. For fun you might want to think about asking the 4 yr. old what to name the baby. When my 3rd. was 4 we asked him what to name the coming baby and he said Ariel. (The Little Mermaid was very popular in our house) We told him that would work for a girl but what if it was a boy. He promptly replied Flounder. (of course that became the baby's name until delivery day) We still laugh about that and occasionally call our daughter (now 14) Flounder from time to time.

We have never been able to decide on a boy name either. We want something a bit unusual, but not weird, too. Luckily, we have two girls (so far). What style of name does your four-year old have?
Lately I like Tate, Wade, Donovan, Leo, Archer, Rand, Craig, Benton, Jay, Tobias, Jonah, and Ty. Maybe one of these will ispire you! Good luck!

Not sure exactly what "kinds" of names you like, but I was in the same predicament when I was pregnant - I didn't want something every other kid in his class would have, and I wasn't crazy about all those wierd variations that are happening nowadays. I wanted something easy to pronounce, easy to spell, and a little old-school. I ended up with Hudson James - and I'm happy to share that name because we ended up having a girl! Good luck - you'll find the right name for your little guy!

I wasn't going to respond because you had so very, very many suggestions but after reading through all of them I didn't see some of my favorites. First, my son is Ryan Anthony and I'd name him that again today. He just turned 16 and his name has served him well. I also love the name Julian although that can sound a little feminine. Another name we're fond of is Alec. My son was asked for suggestions on what to name his half brother and that is what he came up with (and they used it). I've always liked it. Whatever you name your baby I'm sure it will be great. COngratulations!

I am a fan of the traditional names...Joshua or Jacob. Of course, I couldn't use either of these names when I named my son because dad is Josh and brother in law is Jacob. We chose Austin. I had a terrible time picking a name for my son and then an even more difficult time with my daughter. Good Luck.

My husband and I both have very common names (at least for our generation). When we were expecting, we too wanted something uncommon, but not too weird or unusual. Here is what really helped us the most.
1)the book "The Baby Name Wizard": Names are broken down into categories to help you find what you are looking for. There are graphs that show the popularity trend for each name. Complimentary names are listed with each to give you ideas for siblings, middle names, other possible names, etc. It mentions things to think about with any given name, such as famous people with that name, cultural references, things that people might associate with that particular name, etc. (I think someone previously mentioned the website.)**Just keep in mind that the book was published 2005**
2)SSA Popular Baby names: We had lists of the top names from the last few years, so that we could avoid those.
Best of Luck!!

You don't mention if you have any leanings towards heritage or not. That can makes things easier when picking a name and how long your last name is. You generally don't want a first and middle name that will be extremely long with a really short last name or a really short first name with an exceptionally long last name. Those don't always flow right either!
I like some of the older names you don't hear much anymore.
Clinton Shane, Adrian Del, Ashley (Ash)Lane, Blair or Blake with Alan, Chadwick (Chad) Moore, Yancy or York Thomas, Sloan Russell, Quinton Shane, Paxton Oakes, Jared Clark, Darren Chase.
Just a few. I wanted to name a boy Alexander Christian, and a girl Cimmeron Victoria or Tameria Heather. My husband objected loudly because of a 4 letter last name, I have a Stacie Ann and a Sean Patrick instead. Am raising a Cameron Alexander right now so I guess I got that long first name finally (not our natural child, foster daughter left her child behind).
Good luck! I know names can be hard to blend into a person.
