I can not believe I am asking this but I am due in 2 weeks and still do not have a name for my son. I am hoping maybe some suggestions may help. I have one son now which is a third so the name was easy when he was born. I was also very fortunate in the fact that I liked the name a lot. My first son's name is very old fashioned sounding (like 19th century) and I like that. I am looking for something unusual, old fashioned and not used very often. Names I have considered but my husband has vetoed is Jackson or Ryland. I have looked over various websites with no luck. Thanks
I love the name Ryland! My hubby vetoed it when I had put it on the table. Anyway we have two boys Gage & Tysen. Just for thought. Garret, Ronin. Hmmm Tynan, its hard to come up with a good name these days. Anyway hope you like the ones I have thrown out to ya. Good luck

Hey! I just had a boy 3 months ago and we named him Merrick, after his Dad. I love the name and get compliments on it very often. It's a very old Gaelic name meaning 'ruler of the sea'. Not too many Merrick's out there, but it's not weird either.

My son's names were chosen for their meaning. Nathaniel is "gift of God". Verien is from the Latin --veris veritatus, "truly, faithfully". Nathaniel is now a youth minister and Verien is the "one and only Verien" on My Space, but I have found a few other Verien's. He has used this to his advantage on CD's. He majored in Christian Music Business.
My youngest I wanted a special name, so he is Thane Veren--a thane is one who goes out and fights for a king, veren--having truth and faith. I taught both Verien and Thane that their names meant truth and they would never go wrong with the truth in their lives. Thane lived up to his name as he majored in social work and the Bible and is a missionary to the Ukraine.
I had a miscarriage, but for the next baby I looked through the geneology and found some old family names with meaning. Perhaps you could try that.

I named my son after his father but my heart was set on Matthew James (which I liked plus we had very close mutual friends with each name). I swore that would be the name for any male child I may have in the future. When I became pregnant with my second child I was still set on the name but my current husband wanted a Jr. too. I don't dislike his first name but do not like his middle which made it even harder to reach an agreement (especially since his middle was his maternal grandfather's middle name too). I also wanted my son to have his own name.
We reached a compromise of Matthew Charles (Charles was his other grandfather's middle name and I too was close to him before he passed away). Wouldn't you know it, my second child was a girl (her initials are M.C.M just as a boy's would have been).
My sister also likes Justin Kyle (which definately doesn't sound old). I still like Matthew James (or even Matthew Charles)...I don't know your religious beliefs but Matthew James can sound old if you tie it back to biblical times.

First, congratulations!
Secondly, I'd like to hear your last name because that helps to fit a first name with it. My son's name is Evan Isaac, which means Little (Laughing) Warrior...it really fits him to a tee!
My daughter's name came from a movie my husband and I both loved and it was set in the early 1900's( her name is Elise Victoria). If you like 'old sounding names' try books, movies and plays from early eras.
We also looked at names in the phonebook(sometimes last names make good fist names)
Here some names I have heard of or considered for myself:
Ethan(means Strong)
Isaiah (God's helper)
Tristan
Trent (river)
Hayden (fire)
Carson
Benjamin(son of my right hand)
Aden(Aidan/Aiden) (handsome)
Quinn( wise)
Quinton
Sawyer
Donavan (stong fighter)
Griffin (strong in faith)
Elliot
Sterling( pure/high quality)
Wiley
Drake (dragon)
Tyson (firey)
Tanner
Hunter
Lance (short form Lancelot)
Trevor (wise)
Ashton
Landon
Jonathan( gift from God/Jehovah gives...my personal fave)
Tyler
Dustin (fighter)
Spencer
Aldan
OK having a bit too much fun looking at this(since I am done having mine;)...hopefully one of these will spark a creative thought for you...good luck!
Blessings,
L.
I really like the name Alistair, which means light, there's also Oliver, Collin, Stephen; I'm sure you'll find the perfect name.

Dear Victoria,
I had picked names for my boys only to have them change after I gave birth, saw them, and interacted w/ them a little, so don't worry about a "deadline". My boys are Miles Jackson, and Korbin Jasper.
Runners up included: Liam, Caine, Henry, Charles, Sterlin, Ian, Zane, Alton (my husband liked, not so much me), Ely, Porter, Preston.
Hope there is something here you either like or will trigger a good one.
Cheers,

Hi,
You mentioned your first son's name is old fashioned so the web site below might be helpful. The Social Security Admin. lists the top 1000 names starting from 1880.
I'm in the same boat. I don't have a name either and our 5th boy is due anytime. We have ANDREW, RICHARD, ELLIOT, JOHN, with middle names LYON, HUDSON, JOSEPH, and GAVIN. With this one, I told my MIL that I was having Braxton Hicks, and that's what my FIL thought we named the baby! So we've been debating on keeping Braxton, as it's pretty neat. We also like James Ambrose... good luck! All are sort of old fashioned. They are also family names.

The boy's name we had in mind but never used because we have 3 girls was Theodore. I think that is a strong, old-fashioned name. When the child is young you can always call him Teddy.
I also like Graham, Patrick, Robert, Edward, David, Paul, Alexander. These are names that have stood the test of time and don't sound trendy at all.
Good luck! Whatever you pick will be great!

Victoria,
Congrats with your upcoming birth. I have 5 children ages from 13 to 5 months. I named each of my children after what I felt was important in my life. My father passed away last year from cancer, he was a rock in my life. We'll I had a daughter in January this year and named her Seymoura after my father named Seymour. My best friend just had a son and named him Baylor. I guess it's up to what you like and how you want to reflect your child. Best of luck in your name search.

We decided to name our son after our fathers. Since your first son is a third (named after your husband and his dad), what about naming your new son after your father? if that's not doable, I read your story and immediately thought of Solomon. I also love the name Lee (boy or girl). If my son was a girl, that would have been her name..after my grandmother.

Well, my first son's name is Garen (pronounced like Darren). You can spell it w/the 2 r's also. The only problems w/the name are 1, you can't find it in many baby name books for a definition or on personalized items in the stores, and 2 people will think you are saying Darren, Garrett, or even Gary when they ask his name! We love it though. My husband's mom had a little boy who only lived 17 hours and his name was Garen, so that is who we named him after. Garen David (my husbands name is Michael David) we also liked Garen Michael. My other son is Ethan Michael...go figure! I have not met any other boys named Garen! Good luck! happy summer pregnancy! Kruz was probably the hardest of the 3 since we already had two K-kids we couldn't leave him out. LOL! For all 3 boys, these are their middle names they go by.

Might I suggest that you fit the name to your surname, he will be stuck with it for life so be careful of giving him something that will give rise to ridicule. I had a friend whose initials were B.E.D his brother was M.A.D. Our grandson is W.A.N. He goes by his middle name so it won't be too bad, but it could prove embarrassing. If you like the old fashioned, why not John, George or Edward, or something similar. Solid boys names. Fashionable names are very dating and so many people are veering away from the more traditional names that they are being lost to made up names many of which make it impossible to tell if it is a boy or girl.
Although you could wait until he is born and see what he looks like, my sister in law had planned on calling her son one name but when he arrived she said he looked just like a David and that is what he became. Kids tend to grow into a name and people with the same name are often very alike. If there is someone you like and admire perhaps that name would be appropriate.
Good luck

I like the idea of checking out the family tree and taking names you like, or variations on them, to give baby's name significance. My first name (L.) is the feminine form of my mother's maternal grandfather (Lester) and my middle name was my mother's fraternal grandmother's name. My son's first name was my maternal grandfather's middle name (which was his maternal grandmother's maiden name.) The family tree can not only be a great source of ideas, but I have always been proud of the family heritage conveyed in my naming.
Good luck!

These are more thoughts about what to avoid than what to choose: Check online for lists of the most popular babies and children's names today, and then avoid those names like the plague unless there's some deep family connection for you in them. Or else every time you call his name on the playground, 10 other boys will say, "What?" Just a thought. Also be aware of potential nicknames that other kids will attach to whatever nice name you give him. And if for instance you want an old-fashioned longer name like "Nicholas" but "Nick" is forced on him by kids and teachers and you'd just hate that, consider a name that can't be shortened in ways you don't want. You can have a "Nicholas" or a "Matthew" but it takes a lot of work reinforcing it with other adults and kids--I've seen it work and I've seen it fail! Our godson Christian, who was going to be definitely "Christian" forever, is already "Chris" to everyone, alas, one among many Chrises today. Good luck.
I think Ryland is great. Is your husband positive he hates it?

Since your first son is named after your husband, I'm guessing, why not do a play off of your name for your second? What about Victor? Or perhaps using your maiden name as a first name? When I was pregnant I tried to think of names that would have cool nicknames. I would read romance novels for names either first or last that could be used as first. For a boy I also like Tucker (almost named my son this it was down to Tucker or Carson), Jacob, Gabe, Harris.

My sons are Anthony Michael and George Asa. I liked older names that are masculine. I also have a daughter named Amina Rose!). All of their names were for family and special people in our lives (plus we are of Middle Eastern descent so all of these names go both ways.) I liked the named Asher but my husband didn't. It means "happy." I noticed that no one else mentioned that name here but several others were mentioned a lot making me think that they are used more often than people think. I would avoid genderless names. They just cause confusion. My husband is Victor. I don't really care for that name but it would be nice to name your son for yourself! This is such a hard thing but really exciting. Congratulations on your son and good luck with the summer heat!!

Hello,
I had trouble finding a baby name also when I was pregnant. I waited to when I looked at my baby for the 1st time and that when it hit me. He looked like an Evan. I would suggest that you start looking at the library during you spare time and peak at some of the 19th century names that may be characters in some of world greatest books. Perhaps combine one of those names with of those you had like previously for examples:
Sterling Jackson(last name), Ryland Pierce (last name), Ryland Bishop(last name), Jared Ryland (last name). I hope this helps you some.

Hi Victoria,
I was in the same situation with you when I was pregnant with my second son. My husband named our first and wanted to have me name the second. I went back and forth between Ryan and Christian up until the birth. Although I liked both, Ryan seemed too popular and I didn't want Christian shortened to Chris. About a week before, I came across Dean and we went with that. It's a common name that you don't hear very often and it has no shortened nickname. I love it and now I can't imagine him named anything else. Good luck!

I was SURE I was having a girl. So I was POSITIVE she was going to be Chloe Johanna (pron. Yo-Hanna)after 2 of my great grandmothers. The last ultrasound revealed we should pick a boy name. Then I was STUMPED! My husband wanted James after his father who had passed. But I wanted him to have his OWN name. DH found a devirative of James in a baby book - Jameson and I added Steven for a middle after my brother who is no longer with us. I LOVE my son's name, Jameson Steven. Maybe you can think of branches off of family names that already exist. My husband and I had a joke in baby naming - we avoided anything we thought would get him beat up on the playground. That's an important cryteria for boys!
