No to your first question and yes to your second we used two moitors for many months when our third was born.
Ok ladies, I have an 8 month old and we are 3 months pregnant. We live in a larger home and use a standard baby monitor to listen for our son when he wakes from naps or at night. Obviously since he will only be about 14 months old when the baby comes, he will still be in a crib and we will need a way to hear him if he cries or calls out to us. The new baby's room is on the other end of the second floor, that's just how it worked out, and we will need a monitor for that room as well. I know they make monitors with 2 handsets, but do they make monitors with more than one base unit? Will two monitors work at the same time or will they cause static? Any other ideas from any mommas who have been in this situation?
thanks ladies, I have several months yet so i guess I just have to find something that has a different frequency than what we already use, I'd rather not buy 2 new monitors.

I have two Sony babycall monitors. Two bases and two handsets. You can change the frequency on each one so they don't interfere with each other. I just put the kids names on them to tell them apart. I had to there was no way my husband would remember which one was which LOL. It works great for us.
Monitors with more than one base are super expensive. I wanted one but was unable to afford it. I ended up taking the monitor out of my oldest kids room and put it in the babies room. But my child was 20 months old, not 14. I found that even without the monitor, I could hear my child, even while watching tv or talking with my husband. Before spending all the money on a new monitor, try going a few days/nights without using yours and see if you really need it. Congratulations and good luck.
We just bought 2 cheap monitors, I believe they were Safety 1st brand, with 2 frequencies. You can buy sets with 1 receiver each, but we bought the sets with 2 receivers so we can leave them in different rooms. We keep one in the kitchen, office, our bedroom, and we have a spare to take outside if we're working in the yard. Our son's room is on channel 1 and our daughter is on channel 2. They never nap at the same time, so we can very easily switch the receivers to pick up on whichever kid is currently in their room. At night our bedroom is closer to our son's room, so we just crack his door and we can hear him if he wakes up, and we'll turn the monitor to our daughter's room. Hope that helps!
