Are You Squeamish About Sharing Food with Your Child?

Jff...

I am not squeamish, unless my 3yo DD leaves chunks of something behind, or obviously back washes. Lol. My husband thinks it's gross that I will let her take bites off my food (as opposed to cutting her off a piece) or share a drink with her. (Of course, he is weird about things like that. He won't even share with me, yet is willing to kiss/ be intimate wi me. Lol. There's logic for ya!)

She usually eats her own food, but there are times when it's easier to order one big item and share it... Or when a small something is too big, so I share instead of waste. Like an ice cream cone... We can order one, and it is the perfect size for the two of us to share. :)

Obviously, I'm not doing this if one of us is sick, but she does seem to have inherited my unusually strong immune system (knock on wood) So I'm really not too worried about Shari germs with her.

So, do you allow your child to share your food, or insist on separation? :)

What can I do next?

I'm not squeamish about much. I'm squeamish about this though, at least I was when they were little and slobbery. Yuck. One time I was sharing an order of French fries at McDonalds with my then 3 year old son. We each had an ice water to drink. I accidentally picked up his ice water and took a big drink and realized it was full of backwashed fries! When those chunks hit my tongue I lost it and spit it out on my tray! We were in the playland, so when I said "Yuck, backwash!" all of the parents started to laugh knowingly. But yeah, I get grossed out when I see a mom put a bite of cheesecake in baby's mouth, baby leaves slobbery cheesecake (ice cream, whatever) on the spoon and mom licks it off. Gag!

I don't mind sharing food but I HATE sharing my drink.
Ick.
There are always little chunks floating around in my drink after one of my kids takes a "sip." I have to wonder if they even drank anything or if they just wanted some mouthwash.

I always cut off pieces of food like a burger or a sandwich. Mainly so that she could feed herself.

But ice cream I let her taste from the cone or a spoon. Or a piece of fruit, I was eating.. like a peach or watermelon, I would let her take a bite.

Is that what you mean?

Well, I didn't until I read about the backwashed french fry chunks. Now, it's a bigger phobia than my fear of those horrible flying cockroaches in South Carolina somehow getting in my ear.

for the most part it's just sensible for 3 year old to learn to eat her own food. but like you, i'd make exceptions occasionally.
your husband is weird.

I have boundary issues in general - but for some reason I didn't have those feelings with my daughter, so we share things.

I did realize pretty quickly to tone it down, so that she would learn manners. Otherwise she would be drinking out of just anyone's cups and licking everybody's popsicles!!!!! But, generally, I didn't have any problems sharing with her. Now, with the rest of the world........... still not sharing!!!!!

I was never scared of cooties. We licked off the same ice cream cone, ate long French fries like Lady and the Tramp eating spaghetti, shared drinks, etc.

I have the same situation as you. I really don't care if they share with me. Well I do care if the baby does, but that's only because he takes all of my food, so it's not the sharing that's the issue there. When I'm out with the kids, I'm definitely not buying drinks for everyone, we usually get two drinks and split them between the 5 of us. Now my husband, will not share with anyone. Even me - and kissing and intimacy is fine, but for some reason drinking after me isn't?!

I grew up in a "sharing" (stealing) food/drink family and I've never been a germaphobe. So that explains me. My MIL has no idea where my husband gets his issues from and thinks it's rather weird and extreme.

Love sharing food with DD. It's a bonding experience and also teaches, well sharing.

Also, it's cost-effective when dining out to have us order something we both like and split it!

There have been days when they wouldn't eat if it wasn't my food!
We learned really early on to put their portion on my plate then give them small amounts of it at a time on to their plate when they were little.
I've never really seen a big deal in sharing. They're eating, that's my most important aim ;)

DD is almost 14. As a general rule, none of us share utensils or drinks unless absolutely necessary (as in we're dying of thirst and we only have one water bottle). I'm the more germ phobic one, but DH sees the sense in not sharing germs. You never know when someone is going to get sick the next day or has a virus that will be rearing its ugly head later that night. I especially don't like when anyone pokes their fork or finger into my food. Yuck. If you'd like some of my food, you're welcome to it, but I'm going to use a clean fork/knife to cut a new piece off the end I haven't touched yet.

If he's interested in my food I am always willing to give him some! Usually if it's just he and I going out, we might order something larger to share. We aren't squeamish unless someone is under the weather or was ill and finishing recovery. (Things like Noro virus are still communicable for 7 days, so that's when we just take a break on being generous with our own food.)

Oh God... Our son has been stealing bites of our food since he was 6 months old. Literally, from the day he was born he would start crying as soon as we sat down to eat. Even if we fed him immediately before dinner was ready, as soon as he smelled our food and saw us eating, he wanted more. When he was 4 or 5 months old he would try to steal little bits and pieces, but we wouldn't let him. By 6 months we were almost forced to start sharing with him because he REFUSED to eat baby food. He wanted the real stuff that mommy and daddy were eating. Lol!

And yes, now at almost 3 years old, he is still stealing our food. He'll eat off his own plate but he's not afraid to lean over and steal a piece of food off of our plate :)

And no, we are not "squeamish" about it. He's my son. He grew inside of me for 40 weeks (And 1 day). Germs don't matter to me :)

Mine is 2. Yes, I do share with him and my husband.

Side note: Your husband likely divorces from his mind the thought that being intimate with you would rank high on his gross-o-meter, in order to maintain said intimacy. Do not remind him of this in order to make your point. It could backfire.

I do not share food or drink with my son. I love him dearly, but he's a big germ factory and I tend to catch colds & such easily. :)

Heck no. I prefer to share a meal with my kids. For a long time I would share with my youngest, and he would only eat if it was on my plate. Even now I prefer to share since I don't eat much.

I don't prefer to share my drink, but I do.

no I do not share. Like your husband, I will cut a piece off, but no bites or drink sharing. I do not even like to share drinks with my husband.

I can't share utensils or drinks with my kids or my husband. I'll share food but I gag if they use my spoon/fork. And I would never share a drink with my kids unless I drank my half first. Have you ever seen the backwash in kids cups??? Ugh! Makes my stomach churn just thinking about it :-)

I share things, both with my DS and my hubby (assuming no one is feeling sick). He's 2, and his kisses are so sloppy that giving him a bite of my sandwich doesn't even register on my gross-o-meter. Yesterday he took a piece of broccoli out of his mouth, told me he didn't like it, and put it on my salad. I took it out and ate the salad, it was a good salad! If we go out and share he always gets his own plate and I cut some off for him rather than just eating off my plate though.
