HI Mom,

Can anyone suggest a good book to read on parenting from birth to 3 years. I have a one year old and can use some new info in dealing with him. Also any good books on potty training?

Dr. Sears has some great books.. I LOVE "The Discipline Book" and his other books, too. I have found that the best book has been "Unconditional Parenting" by Alfie Kohn, and "Grace Based Living" by Crystal Lutton.

Ditto on the James Dobson! You can also check out the Baby Wise series. Dr. Phil is pretty good, too!

Dear N.,

There is one book just about boys that was an eye opener for me. I am not sure it has stuff about them when they are babies. It is a very thick book. I have bought it for several friends with boys. It is called 'Real Boys' and you can find it on EBay or Amazon.com, I just saw it the other day, so they still have some.

I saw Oprah interview the author on her show a couple of years ago, and it seemed as if the author had done a lot of study and work with boys. I found it very good on many levels. As, I always say about thick books, don't let it discourage you, just skip around until you fnd something that interests you.

I think that it is a special treat and responsibility to raise a boy - they have so much pressure on them from the get go. ...then later in life they are supposed to be the hero and best father, husband, money maker, and on top of all that, be romantic, kind, and , aaaand a great lover....aaaand communicate ! Of course we could say lots of the same stuff about expectations for girls and women, but right now the subject is boys.

Good Luck, C. N.

My pediatrician recommended Parenting from the inside out and I have just started to read it. So far I am extremely impressed, although it's kind of complex...definitely a slow read!

ps, all one year olds must be like that because mine sounds just like yours! Hope you are having as much fun as I am!

I'm very fond of advice from Dr. Sears. I have checked out one of his books from the library and have really enjoyed it so far. You can check out askdrsears.com to see if it seems like his advice jives with your current parenting styles and beliefs. He is pretty flexible with his beliefs... You can check out reviews on popular book sites like amazon.com as well.

for sleeping issues, i like elizabeth pantley and i want to get a copy of no-cry potty training solution.

Parenting: ANYTHING by Dr. James Dobson. LOVE the "Dare to Discipline” book. Also (parenting, relationship, and self improvement in one) “The Five Love Languages” is a GREAT book. It teaches you how to recognize how others receive love. As the title implies, there are 5 “languages” that people speak to give and receive love: Touch, Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, and Gifts. This book has been SO resourceful to my marriage, child, and even a few other friends and family members. (Like, my son is Quality Time. When he starts to act up, I know that it is him asking for QT- which to him equals LOVE! My husband is Acts of Service. So when he complains about a chore being left undone, he too is asking me to “LOVE” him. Knowing this helps me, who is Words of Affirmation, to take it less personally than I would if I didn’t know this.)

Potty training: I haven’t used it yet, but my friends SWEAR by the “Potty Train in a Day” book. They say that if the child is showing at least 5-6 signs of readiness, then this method really does work. One of my friends is supposed to let me barrow it next time we get together. Other than the book, I will say DON’T waste your money on a fancy, interactive potty chair. My son see’s it as a TOY, not a TOOL! He WON’T sit on it, EVER, with his diaper off. Instead, spend about $15 on the kind that just goes on your big toilet. This way you only have to potty train once, AND- if you’re going away to visit someone for the entire day, or going out of town, it’s MUCH easier to take with you.

Hope it helps~ J.

My fave book is not specifically for children that young, but you can adapt it. The book is so great, its not gimmicky, its a way to relate to children. I've used what I learned from that book a work (I'm a pre-school teacher) and even in my personal relationships with adults. I can't explain it quickly, you just have to read it. Its called Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) by Dr. Thomas Gordon.

I used some great practical tips on potty training from the Nanny 911 book. I didn't read the whole book (borrowed from a friend) but it seemed pretty good. My sister has two boys (both total handfulls) and really likes the practical application parts of the Love & Logic books. She recommends them to anyone with kids but especially boys.
