For those of you who use the amber teething necklaces, do your kids sleep in them? We had one with our daughter but didn't use it very often. Now we're using it with our son, but are worried about naps and night time sleeping and the risk of strangulation. Am I being over zealous?

What can I do next?

I would not allow a teething baby to be alone with anything they can choke on. Their whole goal is to grab and shove things in their mouths. I know people who say they are safe, but I can't imagine the supposed benefits outweigh the potential risks.

My daughter has one... Does she EVER sleep in it? - No.

Just to add, I know this wasn't the question ... I don't think they work but babies look adorable in them.

I agree with Veruca. I have friends that swear by them, and their kiddos wear them 24/7. The benefits aren't proven near enough for me to consider it worth the risk.

Nope, not over zealous. My motto is better safe than sorry. Nothing should be in the crib except the baby. Use Orajel (and Motrin if he's old enough) to help with teething pain.

I had to look this up to see what it is. I would not let the baby sleep with it. My daughter almost choked on her baptism chain (gift for her baptism with the Virgin Guadelupe pendant) during a nap when she was 4 months old. The necklace twist and these look like they could do that too.

Here's a well-considered evaluation of the efficacy and safety of amber teething necklaces: http://scienceornot.net/2012/10/30/amber-necklaces-and-te...

I didn't know about these when my daughter was teething, but she didn't have much discomfort, so I wasn't grasping at any solution. I don't think, even if I were desperate, that I'd let a young child sleep in a necklace of any kind.

I've never heard of an amber teething necklace and was assuming it was something YOU wore for baby to play with and chew on, until I actually clicked on your post.

The idea of letting a baby sleep with ANY kind of necklace is absolutely absurd. Of course you should be worried. I hope you aren't putting a strangulation hazard around your babies neck and then putting him down to sleep.

ETA - Peg, I went to your link and was just cracking up at the absurdity of it all. Not that I don't believe in a common sense, holistic approach to some things - but seriously, it was good for a laugh. Brightened my afternoon.

My daughter bought one for my granddaughter. The necklace is short enough that there is no way anything can get between it and her neck or for anything to pull on it so we have no fear of choking. However, her skin gets irritated when she sleeps in it. My daughter suspects it was a waste of $20.
I do think it's cute on her.

This brought back memories of some celebrity/sports person who's daughter was playing by his treadmill and got her necklace caught on it. Somehow it turned on and she choked to death.

Necklaces shouldn't even be worn during play time....snag on stuff all the time.

I can't imagine letting an infant wear anything around their neck. A toddler either.

You do realize unless they are strung together with some sort of steel that is impervious to breaking that any small child will automatically put pieces of that into their mouth in an instant should it break?

Who in the world thought of something like that? How irresponsible! Kids choke to death on stuff like this. If mom isn't holding the baby in her lap completely focusing on that child then that child should not have any sort of access to a teething implement at all. They break/wear down and fall apart.

I thought moms wore the necklace, not the infant. I never let my kids where anything around their necks. Too many stories of strangulation. I can't remember where I saw it, but I just recently read an article about the dangers if amber teething necklaces. Choking and strangulation.
