Allergic Reaction

My 2 year old daughter attended her great grandparents 50th anniversary celebration Sunday. Monday morning she woke up with hives all over her body. We are trying to figure out what she ate and other than shrimp and fresh pineapple she has had everything else. With the shrimp all she did was pick up a tail, put it in her mouth and my grandmother told her no and she put it down. She has gotten hives before after eating a peach pineapple salsa, but she has had canned pineapple with no reaction. Is it possible to be allergic to fresh pineapple but not canned? We gave her Benadryl and put hydrocortisone cream on the hives and they went down considerably, but she today I noticed her hands and feet were a bit swollen. Thanks in advance for any responses.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter is doing much better. We have continued the Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream and the hives have really started going away. Her hands and feet are no longer swollen. She goes to the doctor next month so we will definitely talk to her about seeing an allergist. For now we will keep her away from fresh pineapple and shrimp. Thankfully she never had breathing problems (our son had asthma when he was 18 months til he turned 2); if that would have happened we definitely would not have messed around. My husband is in law enforcement, so he is a certified first responder and I trust that he knows what he is talking about when it comes to the things we need to watch for. Thank you for all your advice. We will definitely start checking all the food labels to make sure no shellfish is involved.

She is probably allergic to shell fish all she needed to do was touch it and touch any part of her body that can be a very serious reaction. I have a friend who has to carry the pen with the injection in case she comes in contact with any shellfish.

I would definately get her to a doctor!! my son is allergic to eggs and peanuts. Peanuts if he ingest them, and the eggs only if he eats the fried or scrambled opr deviled. If they are in baked goods they do not bother him at all. Food allergies are not something to mess around with. I would get her looked at by an allergist. We use Childrens Mercy and they are great. Hope all goes well. E.

I would simply keep her away from shellfish and pineapples for the time being. I would say it was probably the shellfish that gave her the reaction. If she was allergic to pineapple, she would have a reaction with canned or fresh. Of course discuss this with your pediatrician at her next appt. I have 2 boys both with a peanut allergy and we check labels closely, that's something else I would say to do. Be cautious
with the pineapples too until you are sure she is ok with it. It's not worth having another reaction, is it? Both my boys broke out in hives, eyes swelled shut and their throats swelled too..so scary!
Take care,
V.

Take her to the doctor asap. My daughter had the same thing a few weeks ago. A horrible red itchy rash all over her body, swollen joints, her eye even started to swell and she was coughing. It was a severe allergic reaction that required prescription medicine (a steroid plus a medicine like Benadryl, but stronger). Even with the meds, the symptoms came and went for several days. We never did figure out what caused it, but the allergist said it could have been something she inhaled outside. Now we have an epi-pen that we are supposed to use if she ever has another reaction.

Actually, yes she could have reactions to raw fruit, and not cooked. My daughter started having problems eating fruit in 7th grade after eating watermelon at a watermelon feed at school. Her lips swelled up and she said her mouth itched. It gradually went from watermelon to any raw fruit. She could eat baked apple with no problems, so we found out if the fruit had been cooked she didn't have a reaction. I haven't taken her to an allergist about it, but I did read somewhere that she may not actually be allergic to the fruit but to ragweed and her body is interpreting fruit as the allergen. The histamines react to it. which seems like she's allergic if she's reacting, but I'm not an allergist, so I don't know the distinction.
Benedryl works like a charm, but if your daughter is getting hives, that seems more serious than itchy throat and swollen lips. I would recommend going to an allergist and getting food allergy testing for her to be safe. Shrimp allergies can be serious, and cause anaphylactic reactions.

The thing I want to add to this is basically what others have said...GET HER SEEN BY A DOCTOR! Some allergies can get serious quickly. Your biggest concern with allergies is her airway closing, and it can happen really fast... Get her checked NOW. My husband is an EMT on an ambulance, and while I'm not sure where you are from, an allergy emergency needs help immediately, and it takes time for an ambulance to get to you. If her airway is closing, you don't have time...and this can be terrifying for her and you (and it could be deadly)...It sounds like you have been lucky so far, but don't mess with it. If she is found to have a serious allergy you can keep an epi pen with you at all times, and they will teach you how to give it. Take this very seriously. And thank God that she is okay now. Regardless of the cause it was a serious reaction and needs to be figured out before it happens again. Good luck.

I can remember that my grandmother was allergic to fresh strawberries, but was fine with them if they had been cooked or frozen...

Talk with your peds doc, and perhaps a visit to an allergist/immunolgist is needed for testing...your peds doc should have a refferal list.

I am severely allergic to shell fish, but it got worse gradually as I got older...I used to be able to eat it, and then one time i ate it and had to go to the hospital becuase everything swelled closed, no hives though. A few years later, my dad kissed my cheek after eating shrimp and i broke out in hives and my eye swelled shut...so it very well could be either of those things. Shellfish is such a common thing to be allergic to.

yup. and have her pediatrican run a RAST panel that tests specifically for pineapple and shellfish allergies....shellfish allergies can be life threatening very quickly and weird things you wouldn't think of have shellfish in them. good luck!

My thirteen year old son has an allergic reaction to fresh pineapple similar to your daughter. He developed the allergy when he was about two years old and still has it. He can eat the canned variety cooked into dishes such as ham or upside down cake, but if it is fresh he almost immediately breaks out into either hives or a rash. We use Benedryl to treat it, also.

My son is allergic to shellfish. We have to be careful at resturants because they often use the same oil for the french fries, chicken and shellfish. He will have a reaction when he eats a french fry that was fried in the same oil as shell fish. I always keep Benadryl strips in my purse. I would suggest seeing an allergist.

Take her to an allergist, it could have been an ingredient in something else she ate or something she touched and it could very well have been the shrimp. She may be allergic to shell fish. The allergist can help determine what exactly it was so you can avoid that in the future. Good luck and God Bless.

thank God the reaction occurred so slowly and you were able to give her the Benadryl. I'd definitely take her to the Dr and have allergy tests done. Our 2 year-old was diagnosed with allergies at about 1 and we now know what to watch out for and sometimes just touching or being around teh offensive foods is enough to cause a severe reaction. For her the culprits turned out to be primarily eggs, peanuts, fish, grass, pollen and less severely shellfish, mold, etc...it was quite a list, but we're able to be prepared at all times...even being careful we still often experience at least 1 beakout most weeks, but we have been able to avoid the severe reactions for months. We have learned to keep the individual Benadryl packaets and a tube of her cream with her at all times just in case. For instance, yesterday at a meeting a stranger handed her a cookie without asking first when my back was turned. It looked to be sprinkled with peanuts and when I looked it was in her mouth! Thank goodness it was crispy rice and not peanuts, but it was close! But I was prepared just in case! Please have the Dr. run the tests so that you will know for sure.

With allergies its important to remember that you do not have a reaction with first or even 25th exposure always... Sometimes it takes multiple exposures before you actually have a reaction... I agree that you might want to talk to your doctor about it. My son is allergic to milk, soy & eggs, the latter two we didnt know til he was 6 months old, so I feel your pain in not knowing what caused the problem! Good luck with this.
Oh! Just wanted to add that I agree with the other mum who said to avoid those foods because sometimes each exposure induces a more severe reaction. Not trying to scare you :( just thought about it after re reading your post.

Sounds like an allergic reaction to the pineapple to me. I would take her to an allergist. My daughter has the same reaction to contact cinnamon. If you need an allergist. Dr. Onder in St. Charles is excellent.

You can be allergic to one form of a food, but not another. She could also be so allergic to shellfish that even touching it could cause her problems. It would be a good idea to have an allergist do some testing & after you find out what she is allergic to, see a NAET specialist. NAET is the only way that I know of to have allergies and end up living a normal life. My mom went through years of allergy shots & never lived a normal life. My son is seeing a NAET specialist and in about year we should be living "normal". A friend of ours son has almost completed the program & is doing wonderful and then she is going send her toddler through the program as he is allergic to EVERYTHING! Hope you find the source and a solution that works for your family.

With swollen feet and hands, get her to the doctor immediately! They may need to give her an injection to get the reaction to stop. I'd take her to the ER if your doctor's office won't see her right away.
