Is This an Allergic Reaction?

My daughter ate noodles at dinnertime. The noodles were an Italian dish that included shrimp and tomato sauce, though she didn't eat any shrimp. She only ate one noodle. I saw her less than five minutes later and it looked like she had been hit in the eye. There was a red shadow and a bump under one eye. I immediately took away her plate, gave her water and kept watching her for further reaction. I'm probably answering my own question, but is this an allergic reaction to the shrimp or the tomato? She eats pizza and spaghetti. Never saw this reaction before. Should I worry about her overnight?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much! She just turned 5 last month. I guess I was confused, as she had an allergy test last year, a very thorough painful allergy test, which did not reveal any food allergies. We chose not to give her Benadryl, as she was already taking Rondec DM for an upper respiratory infection. She is asthmatic, so I tend to be a little cautious about mixing decongestants and antihistamines, but that's another story. We prayed and watched her throughout the evening for signs of wheezing or further swelling. Had the swelling worsened, we would have taken her to the hospital, but the swelling and redness both faded before she went to bed.

Yes I would definately say this is a allergic reaction. My daughter who is now almost 4 at 2 years old had an reaction to a mosquito bite, both of her eyes swelled almost shut and the way you are describing the way her eye looked reminds me of what my daughters looked like at first. I would definately avoid food at has been cooked with shrimp or lobster or any food that may have been cross-contaminated with those, because I know you wouldn't want the reaction to be worse than it was intially!

It could be a reaction to the tomato or shrimp. She didn't have to eat the shrimp for her to have a reaction to it. My sister when she was younger would get hives from eating whole tomatoes. She never had a reaction to pizza or spaghetti. Were there whole tomato chunks in the dish? I would definitely call her doctor. I would also keep some Benadryl on hand. She is allergic to something and with all the spices in an Italian dish it may be hard to really pinpoint what could have caused the reaction.

I would also think that this is an allergic reaction to the shrimp. Shellfish are highly allergenic. They also cross react, so I would avoid crabs and lobster too, or only allow her to have a tiny amount and watch for reactions. The antigens from the shrimp would get into the sauce, so she would not have to eat one to get a reaction.

Benadryl is an awesome antihistamine, so you need to keep a pediatric dose on hand for the future. I recommend taking your daughter to an allergist for the best advice, though.

If someone has a seafood allergy (shrimp), they can have a reaction to something cooked in the same pan with the seafood without even eating the seafood....

It sounds like a allergic reaction. You should keep benedryl handy. I have a child with multiple food allergies. I am constantly watching him and watching everything he eats. Contact your child's doctor and tell him/her what is going on. good luck. please feel free to contact me if you need any more help regarding the food allergies, if this is what she has.

It does sound like it might be an allergic reaction. I would keep an eye on it and see how it looks in the morning if it still looks bad I would call the doctor just to be safe.

Looks like she is allergic to Shrimps or may be tomato. What you did is right. I would give her a spoon of antihistamine like a benadryl right away. (wher it says for allergy as a precaution)
I had allergy to crabs and my son has allergy toa vegetable.

Hi!
if she has a shellfish allergy, even being around the shrimp, particularly if it was cooked in the same sauce she ate, could cause a reaction....shellfish allergies are very sensitive....much like peanut allergies. good luck!

maybe a reaction to the shrimp since she has had pizza/spaghetti. shellfish are a common allergy food. even if she didnt eat any, the shrimp touched the food she did eat. its a little weird for the "rash" to be on her eye, but i havent seen a food allergy rash before.

I vote shrimp! Keep her away from all shellfish until confirmed w/ an allergist. Contact your ped or allergist if you have one TODAY request an epi-pen to keep w/ her at ALL times. Fas are very serious! I have 3 FA kids, 2 have had anaphylactic episodes. DD's 1st reaction to kiwi was 1 swollen eye, her 3rd exposure at the Dr's office(thankfully) she went into anaphylactic skock. Hugs, best wishes!

It definately sounds like it could be a reaction. The trouble is you don't know to what. Even though she didn't eat the shrimp, the shrimp touched the pasta which she ate. Also, my son is allergic to tree nuts and some pastas are made in factory's where tree nuts are used. We have to always check the labels. It may not hurt to call the pediatrician or pediatric allergist and see if they want to look into it further. If it happens again, give her benadryl and see if the skin/eye improves. If it does, that's probably your answer (but just b/c it doesn't improve wouldn't indicate it wasn't an allergy). Hope this helps.

This could be an allergic reaction. It only takes a molecule of an allergen to cause a reaction. Shrimp is not a safe food, nor is lobster and crab. These sea foods are known to be allergy villans. AF

Sounds like a reaction. If she's had tomato stuff before, I would guess it was the shrimp. I would call the pediatrician tomorrow and see what they suggest (as far as should you offer her shrimp again to see if she has the same reaction).

As L. as she's breathing fine I wouldn't worry too much, but as a mom, I know that's hard to do. You don't mention her age, but if you have children's benadryl on hand you might want to give her a dosage.
