What do you do with the hundreds of crayons you collect? Why can't I throw them away, even if they are really old, I feel bad. Is there anything creative to do with these?

So What Happened?

Besides the sore fingers this was a fun project. We melted the crayons, sorted by similar colors, in cupcake pans. I'm going to use them in the easel. To make the peeling easier I used a little box cutter and sliced the paper before handing them to my kids. Thanks for the ideas!

Peel the papers and melt similar colors together put the hot wax on a piece of parchment paper to cool and make new crayons. or shave the crayons and melt between two pieces of wax paper then cut into star or other shapes and put in the window.

I've done both the ideas for projects. I did some googling and ... this idea was so much cooler than my wax hanging designs came out.

One idea that my neighbor did was, she used this as an item for a treat bag and made a colorful star shaped crayon, that wrote with multi-colors. I'm guessing she must have some kind of cupcake pan or something, shaped like stars. But here was the idea.... very cute, whatever the shape.

there's a charity based in Downer's Grove that collects them and makes them into new crayons then donates them to area places

For Valenines day we take our crayons peel off the paper and put them in heart molds ($10 at Micheals with 6 large hearts. Bake at 200 for about 20-30 min. and then bring out to cool. A great Valentine class gift WAY better than candy and uses old broken crayons!!

You can also recycle crayons. I know the Notebart Nature museum has a place to do it - and your local library may as well.

Peggy Nobart Nature Museum (near the Lincoln Park Zoo) actually has a crayon recycling drop-off in the lobby. They have battery drop off too.
