Ladies, I want to upgrade our bed without buying new mattress (ours are a good quality set, but about 9 y/o). I slept on some feather pillows in a hotel recently and it also had a feather mathress cover. I have to say it was much more comfortable than our bed today. So my question is in your opinion, which pillows are more comfortable? feather, down, or down alternative. Also, I noticed the pillows in the stores are targeted towards back sleepers, side sleepers, or stomach. Can this really make a difference or is this just a marketing ploy? I am a back sleepers and I don't like really puffy pillows, in fact today mine is very flat. But most mornings I wake up with a stiff neck, achy back....I welcome your thoughts on the pillows and other ideas for a mini bedroom make over. Thanks!

What can I do next?

hi D.,
WE use a feather topper over our mattress and our pillows are feather too, I believe it is personal preference. Down is feathers also, they make down alternative for people who are sensitive or have allergies.I couldn't say on the back, side, or stomach, pillows. But I do know that I was I your same situation waking up in the morning aching due to an old mattress set- we invested in the sleep number bed and a feather topper and I love them both! Good Luck with your bedroom makeover.

Hi D., Even a good quality mattress only has a life of about 10 years. This is because people sleep in the same position and the older mattresses did not have the engineering of the new ones and tend to get sleep craters where your body rests every night. If you can eke a few more years out of your mattress with the topper try it. Good Luck, Nana

We just house sat for my inlaws, and they have the most comfortable bed ever. We are considering upgrading as well.

First, they have a padded cushion on their mattress that is about 2-3 inches thick. On top of that, they have the memory foam pad.

As for the pillows, they have a mixture of down (not alternative) pillows and some high end cotton ones.

They just stayed at a Marriot and loved the pillows, but they have to be ordered online. I don't know the name of them, but maybe a call to the Marriott can tell you that info.

As for the back sleeper pillows, I have no clue, all I know is tha the memory foam pillows aren't as great as they say they are.

We have foam pillows (not memory foam) and I have never slept so well before. We also just added a 3" memory foam topper. It is a high-quality, mid-priced topper. We spent about $350 for it. We bought the pillows at Dillards. ($30 a piece) It has been worth every penny and much less expensive than a new mattress set.

I bought a foam fitted pillow from my Chiropractor after an accident. It should have been replaced a LONG time ago, but it is so comfortable I can t give it up. I sleep on all three. I usually fall asleep on my side and depending on DH's snoring I flip around quite a bit at night. I have stayed in many hotels, and I do not like their pillows, I need my neck support and kick myself everytime I forget to pack my pillow.

The hotel pillows I've loved in the past are from pacific coast. They can be ordered on their website. The only thing is they can be expensive. Overstock.com is where I recently bought pillows and linens. Discount prices on the good stuff but in limited amounts. The selection changes frequently so if you watch the site for a few weeks, you can get really great deals. I've always had cheep pillows and replace them so often. I think I've paid more that way then just buying good quality in the beginning. I'm a side sleeper and I have to have a firmer pillow or I end up with aches. Hope this helps.
