Try to stay away from the all black over the hill, graveyard stuff. It's already really daunting having kids at 40 - I know because I have 2. I don't want anyone pointing out how over the hill I am. Maybe it's differant for men. Why not go for a This is your Life theme? Play music from his birth year. What's that 1971? Print newspaper clippings of the big headlines from his birth year. What famous people were born that year. Play trivia from that year on the pop culture of the day. You could find out what were the popular party foods - deviled eggs and stuffed celery were big back then. Or you could just go full on 70s Disco party and ask everyone to come dressed for the 70s.

I threw my husband a surprise birthday party when he turned 40 - we basically rented out a nice (but small) bar and I invited everyone - his friends from high school, his local family etc. He had a blast. Six years later I was about two months pregnant when I turned 40 and he threw my a surprise party! I thought we were going out to dinner just the two of us and all my friends plus my parents from out of state were there - I was shocked! And it gave me a chance to tell my parents I was pregnant with their first grandchild in person. Anyway, I highly recommend the surprise party at a venue (restaurant or bar) approach.

COngrats!

Oh, editing after reading PP to add that for my husbands his Mom made a photo collage with all sorts of hilarious pictures of him growing up and had i there, and at mine his friend had made a slideshow to play on an screen with pictured of me throughout my life. Everyone loved it. I agree - no graveyard stuff etc, 40 is so YOUNG that attitude is ridiculous these days.

We recently went to a surprise 40th bday party for a friend of my husband's. It was held in at a hall and they had a bar, all of his family and friends from college/high school, etc. were invited. Dinner was served buffet style and they had a dj and dance floor...it was simple and so much fun!! Everyone had a great time!

The funniest idea I have heard of is a Neanderthal Party. Everyone dresses up as cave men and women. You cover furniture in brown bulliten board paper to look like rocks. You get him gag gifts like rocks and sticks. My English teacher from high school did this for her husband's 40th. It was a big joke saying she took it back to his younger days. lol. Just an idea.
