2Mo Old Crying and Sucking on His Fist

So I was curious...our son just turned 2mo old and he's recently started sucking on his fist and crying a lot. Could this be an early sign of teething? We're seeing his ped on Wed and we plan to talk to her about it but I was curious what you other mothers out there think.

Thanks!

Edit: Yes I've been feeding him on demand. He's been doing this when he's not hungry.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After talking with our son's ped at his 2 month appt, it appears that he wants to suck on his pacifier or thumb and that's what we've been seeing. After talking with the doc and reading all of your responses, it seems like such an obvious thing now. Definitely feeling a little foolish at the moment. >.< Thanks for all the input!

At this point in time, he's learning he wants something in his mouth when he's hungry or thirsty. I would try feeding him.

Could be? Could also be that he is hungry...almost all babies do this though, so it's nothing to worry about.

All 3 of my kids got a mild fever and runny nose while teething and they preferred a warm washcloth to chew on instead of the frozen or cold teething toys.

Two of mine acted like they were teething very young and they got their teeth at 4 months. My other three got them later and didn't go through this until later. Congratulations!!

No. He's not teething.
Are you feeding him on demand?
or on a schedule?

Too young to teeth, hes hungry. At 2 months they go through a growth spurt. Feed him more.

To be honest, it sounds like he's hungry.

Have you been letting him sleep through the night? Babies this age tend to suddenly sleep long stints of about 6 hours or so. But at this age, they are not yet old enough to sleep this long without food, so make sure you wake him every 3 hours to eat. I think you can move to every 4 hours around 12 weeks.

Letting babies sleep this long can reduce the amount of milk you are producing and as a result, he may not be getting enough during the day (as well as at night). If you ARE feeding him through the night, and on demand, than I must admit, I am clueless. I've never heard of a 4 week old baby teething (or 8 weeks, for that matter).

BEWARE: if you take him to the doctors, they may tell you he isn't getting enough milk and that you need to supplement with formula. Tell them to take a hike; they're wrong. If you do suspect lowered milk supply, just feed on demand for as long as he wants (don't bother with the doctor-recommended 10-20 minutes on each boob, time limits are bunk as well), get plenty of skin-to-skin contact (cuddling, whenever you hold him, etc). Another thing one can do is do a stint where you ask daddy to take care of anything and everything while you stay in bed with the little kidlet for 24-48 hours and just nurse nurse nurse whenever he wants. This can help a lot to up production.

But if these aren't you problems, then I must admit I am stumped!

Good luck!

Your son is likely going through the growth spurt common at this age. He is most likely hungry. Do you know other signs to watch for before crying? Crying is the last sign that baby is hungry.

Babies need to suck - it is very soothing to them. I have 4 girls. 1st spit out the Nuk when she found her thumb at 3 months old. 2nd used the Nuk until we took it away cold turkey at 2 years old. 3rd didn't use anything, and 4th is 6 weeks old today and is figuring out how to keep the Nuk in alongside trying to get a finger in her mouth/fist sucking. Not sure yet how she will turn out!

If your baby truly is not going through a growth spurt and doesn't need feeding, then I would keep offering pacifiers or help him guide a thumb into his mouth. It's possible it's teething; my niece cut two teeth at 4 weeks, they went back down after a few weeks and she had to re-cut them at 4 months. (Poor baby!) In that case I would use Hyland's Teething Tablets. Orajel can numb their throats and cause them to choke while eating, so if you have to use it, only apply it after you've just filled his tummy.

Blessings to you and your little guy!

If it is teething and not hunger (since you mentioned he does this when he's not hungry), I second the hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. They work very well. I also recommend either a Baltic amber or hazelwood necklace. Both help with the pain caused by teething (though they work diferently). The Baltic amber releases an oil into the skin that is a natural pain killer and anti-inflammatory. The hazelwood has the natural property of absorbing acidity from the body which often causes much of the pain associated with teething. It also helps decrease rashes caused by acidic bowel movements (common during teething) and can also help a ton for eczema and acid reflux or spit up (not sure if he has either of those issues). We have used both necklaces very succesfully for our family. My youngest had eczema all over her body as a baby and the hazelwood has been a miracle for her! You can click on my signature to learn more about how they work.

Good luck mama!

Hello,

I would agree with the other mom's - it's not teething, it's just that he's getting bigger and wants to eat more. They get a little more demanding every month :) A binkie is a good idea too b/c it allows him to sooth himself (to take it away, just cut the tip of the binkie off and give it back to him - so easy!!).

Enjoy these days -they go by way too fast.

He is HUNGRY.
You need to feed him on-demand.... 24/7.

Are your breastfeeding or using Formula????
If you are breastfeeding, make SURE you are producing enough milk... otherwise baby will be constantly HUNGRY and NOT getting enough intake... nor proper intake.

My son started teething at about that age, but they just came up and went down for a few months before they actually came in. He would get the worst drool, chew on everything and fuss, constantly. I had to give hime Hyland's teething gel or tablets to calm him down. Worked wonders.

You can also put him on a powdered probiotic and finger feed it to him. This will help with any colic/gas/reflux issues, if there are any, and with the diaper rash that comes with the excess drool while teething.
