Not much, they check your fluids and measure the baby to make sure ED is right and watch the heartbeat.
Hi guys!
This is my 1st baby and I'm new to this forum. I'm 7 weeks 3 days. I have scheduled my first ultrasound in a few weeks. Can anyone tell me what I can expect? Thanks!
Thank you all for the responses!! It helps to hear from moms who have been there:)

An uncomfortably full bladder!
For me, it was one of the most exciting things I ever experienced. I was very lucky that my husband was able to come as well. We were able to see our son, who looked like he was about one inch tall. There was this blinking light, and the tech told us it was the heartbeat. I think I actually cried!
The tech looked around for quite awhile. I can't remember everything (our son is 6 years old), but I know she looked around for different things, including my ovaries. She printed pictures for us. Eventually she let me get up and pee :-)
I remember the tech couldn't find everything she needed to find. I think she couldn't find one of my overies. I guess this is not uncommon. Anyway, after she let me get up and pee, she had to do an internal ultrasound. I'm not sure there is a classy way to describe it. She took out a big wand and put a plastic sleeve over it, (kind of like when you get your temperature taken by putting a thermometer in your mouth) and I had to insert it. She then held on to the other end and moved it around so she could get the other measurements. It was a little weird but no big deal. Anyway, I guess it's not uncommon for women to need an internal ultrasound.
Just try to relax and enjoy the experience. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. This is a very exciting time for you!
My first ultrasound with all my kids was transvaginal. It does not hurt, just a bit awqard. Its small, like a tampon.
They check for the babys heartbeat, that the baby is there, and that there is a yolk sak attached. Just a overall check to make sure everything is measuring correctly for how far along you are.
Its nice, and you will get a nice little picture of your baby that will look like a little gummy bear at this point.
Congrats! I still have my gummy bear pics from my kids. :)
The most joyous time of your life. Then realizing your growing a humanbeing inside of you then birth amazing..Take care
Check heart beat fluids growth size estimate your due date and go off your LMP.Get some pics to take hoem and show your family
Pure excitement and exhilaration!!!!! Gelly on your belly and a beautiful picture of baby! Some practices warm the gel and some don't. Tech squeezes gel across your stomach and takes the tranducer probe and runs it across your stomach. It finds baby and prints a picture for you to send to all your loved ones!! You can also request the live filming on disc or video so you can see baby's heart beat. You are then given a towel to wipe off excess gel and it's all done. As your pregnancy progresses, and baby becomes clearer to see you can request a 3D sonogram. Have fun, be excited and enjoy the stages of your baby through sonogram!
Welcome to Mamapedia and congrats on your first pregnancy!!!
I had a transvaginal ultrasound at my initial appointments with my three kids. With the first two pregnancies, they tried to do it on my belly, but I have a tilted uterus so they couldn't see anything. With the third, the tech just went immediately for the transvaginal wand.
They do the early ultrasounds to make sure it's a viable pregnancy and that the measurements are what they should be for the gestational age. That's really all they can tell at this point. They will tell you your due date, give you a prescription for prenatal vitamins, and mine gave me a copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting.
Congratulations!
Well, my experience was that the nurse will put some gel on your tummy and doctor will do the USG.,it doesn't hurt. You can see the baby on a big screen and doctor can see how is your baby doing.
It is important because doctor can see how is the baby growing, does he has something to concern of.
Well if you're having your first ultrasound soon it may be an intervaginal wand and not jelly on the tummy. My first ultrasounds were at about 8 weeks and my doctor used the wand (put a condom on it first, which is kind of a crack up) and put it in himself. I have heard that some doctors ask the moms to insert it (sounds gross I know), but be prepared for either. At that early, your baby really does just look like a little bean! It will be tiny but magical! You will probably be able to see a heartbeat but not hear it....or maybe it's the other way around, but I don't think so. The subsequent ultrasound(s) will be the more "traditional" jelly on the tummy like you see in the movies! Either way it's super awesome! Congrats!
Read up on ultrasounds :) They aren't necessary at all for a safe and healthy pregnancy. I did get them while pregnant, but wish I hadn't.
There are all kinds of ways to birth babies out there, so it's good that you educate yourself as much as possible, as early as possible to make the choices YOU want for your baby, not what the OB or midwife wants :)
