My daughter is turning one in a couple of months. (I know it's early but this summer we have a lot going on and I am a crazy planner!) I am planning on making her own personal birthday cake. Does anyone know of a recipes for a cake that won't leave her with a tummy ache? She has never had anything like cake; I don't plan on giving her anything like that until her birthday; I just don't want her to get sick! It doesn't have to be organic by all means but just something that is not completly loaded with sugar! Let me know your thoughts.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! I think I am just going to make a small cake and use some type of whip cream frosting. I'll just monitor if any even goes in her mouth. Thanks again for all of your help!

How about making her-her own b-day cup cake ,instead of a big piece.
Maybe a carrot cake my kids love that. She will probably make more of a mess with whatever you give her and not really eat it,well thats what ended up happening with my three kids. Good luck.
P.s you know they have jello recipes too!!!!!!!! Nothing really healthy when it comes to cake, hey maybe banana cream pie. Lol

Hi E.,

I understand your concern with her little tummy. Health food stores like 'Whole Foods', or here in Long Beach there is a Wild Oats, have a soy based cake mix that is really good. The dairy is usually what upsets tummies that young even for babies who can have milk. My son can't have any dairy at all, so I know all about it. The cake mixes are surprisingly yummy (my husband couldn't tell the difference) and using non-dairy whipped cream frosting should help avoid stomach aches. Hope this opens up your options a little.

I dont know about the cake. BUT when you do figure out what kind of cake to make her do a test run first. Make a sample cake and give her a little to see how her tummy reacts. Just in case. You dont want her to have a tummy ache on her special day!

HI

Whipping cream is a good alternative to frosting. Normal cake mixes would be fine I would think with whip cream frosting. It is the sugary frostings that make them so sweet. You might be surprised with normal cake mix (Duncan Hines, ect..) and whipping cream. You can color it too!!

Good luck...

Researching on-line for some low-sugar cake recipes is a great idea if you're really concerned about sugars and other potential tummy ache-causing ingredients. My girlfriend recently did that for her little boy and the recipe was so good that even the adults loved it! Also, instead of a cake, she made cupcakes, which turned out to be the perfect size for her little boy to eat and (mostly) play with.

To be honest usually they never eat that much no matter if you decide to stick in front of them to tear apart. Most of the time they just like to stick there fingers in it and squish it between their fingers. I have a daycare and I have done many 1 year old cakes. I have never had one that ate too much. that is around age 2. If so I just take it away. I did have a mom that was organic. I compromised and did a carrot cake she made with organic whip cream. They do not even know the diffence.

At 1 years old, be aware of foods you should 'avoid' per their age, or foods they haven't had yet, and due to allergies, or choking hazards.Peanut butter, tree nuts, honey, egg whites, citrus, shellfish, etc. Look at www.babycenter.com for foods to avoid. Just look online and do a 'search' for birthday cake recipes that are 'safe' for this age. Remember, at this age, a baby won't actually 'eat' cake... they may taste it. You are the parent, you don't have to give your girl a whole serving. It's mostly for the adults, and to take photos for her album, right? To remember her birthday. Yes, cake is sugar. But find a recipe online, that is suitable for children, organic or not. It's up to you whether you actually want to introduce cake to her and have her eat it at this age. Good luck!

My son barely even touched his one year old bday cake. He had never had anything like cake before, and it was not something he was really into. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hello there..I had the same probelm when my daughter was turning one as wel. Up till that point she never ate anything sweet, like cake or ice cream. So for her cake I just made a regular yellow cake from a box mix..just look at the nutrition facts and look for one with the lowest sugar grams...a little bit on her birthday is a good right of passage...lol. As for the frosting..that is what had me worried the most. So I ended up buying some whipping cream and just whipped it into whip cream and I added splenda for flavor and thickness...It will have to stay in the fridge because of the frosting..but it worked out well. Have fun. Check the Splenda website for low sugar ideas.

go with a carrot cake cake with cream cheese frosting...then you could use those little decorative pans so that you can make her cake smaller...and pretty...

Hey, another cool idea... if she's going to have other children at a party -- you could make a handprint wall hanging. I have a picture of one (link below)
You just buy a stretched canvas (although the less expensive ones on a board might even work better because they have a back) and some paint in various colors. If you're interested, I'll give you more info so you can do it yourself.

For my sons first birthday I made a cake shaped like a teddy bear (cake pan was shaped that way) out of betty crocker, instead of frosting I used whipped cream for the bear buttons and eyes. I then made him a MUCH smaller cake with one thing of whipped cream for decoration. He tasted it and made a mess all over his face and hands. That's what it's all about. I wouldn't stress too much over the cake, worry about your carpet. :)
