Looking for Low Sugar Recipes

My family has a long history of diabetics so I'm trying to be more cautious about what foods my family eats. We have several birthdays coming up and I want to be able to make something yummy for dessert, but I don't want it to be loaded with sugar (low sugar and yummy...does that exist??). I would love any low sugar recipes that other moms have if you'd be willing to share!

So What Happened?

Thank you to all of you that responded! You have given me a lot of great recipes and resources to try. I am fortunate enough that my family is not picky. I'm sure that when it comes to dessert, they'd be more than happy to be my guinea pigs! I look forward to testing out the new recipes!

My mom is very health conscious and I remember always having angel food cake or carrot cake for birthdays- so delicious. She always made glaze icing with powdered sugar, water, vanilla, butter(opt.) for the angel food cake, and cream cheese frosting on carrot cake by whipping cream-cheese and sugar. Stevia is a plant derived sweetener that's sweeter then sugar so you could substitute it in both cases. Happy Celebrating:)

Angel food cakes are really yummy. You can put cool whip on them instead of heavy frostings and put fresh fruit on them. You can do a sugar cookie pizza too, where you make the sugar cookies, make one HUGE cookie on a pizza platter, when cooled put cool whip on it and slice up fresh fruit.

You can also do lighter versions of sundaes, get frozen yogurt with less sugar and do toppings like light caramel and fresh fruit and sprinkles. Have a sundae bar as kids love to build their own.
You can also do bananas/strawberries on sticks frozen dipped in chocolate.
When baking you can use natural applesauce instead of sugars in a lot of them which still gives it sweetness without a cup of sugar.

Sugar in it's real form I truly believe is better then substitutes. I think in moderation and making sure they don't binge on it is the best way to prevent too much in their systems. I think on special days like Birthdays just keeping it low key like maybe watering down the juices, getting No sugar added juices and lighter cakes. It is the frosting that is the killer on bday cakes!
Ask your Pediatrician too what they deem as good levels daily of sugar with your family history. I limit juice to one glass at breakfast, I did sugar free popsicles for treats but my Pedatrician said that substitutes are not good and there isn't relevant testing on them to see what the harmful side effects later could be.

Have you tried cooking with Stevia? It is all natural (comes from a cactus leaf), way sweeter than sugar, and is actually GOOD for you!

There are two online recipe databases that I rely heavily upon.

One is Splenda.com. Remember that there are generic forms of this product available. It's called Altern at Wal-Mart and King Soopers also has a generic. I've had wonderful luck with every recipe I've tried from the Splenda.com site.

I make the carrot cake from the Splenda.com site for many occassions. It's wonderful.

Then there is diabeticgourmet.com. They even have a daily recipe service that sends one recipe and a link to a second recipe each day.

Hi there, we were in the same boat for my girls' last birthday. I ended up making regular Betty Crocker white cake with sugar free cool whip topping and sliced strawberries on top. Everyone was shocked at how they couldn't tell it was almost completely sugar free. Good luck to you.

As far as cakes go I don't worry too much because most sugar ends up in the frosting. Here is my favorite frosting recipe for cake it won't decorate unless you add frosting but is very light and so I will use this and make frosting just for decorating on the side.
Cream together:
1 8 ounce package Cream Cheese
1 sitck butter
Then add:
1 T vanilla
1 cup powdered sugar
Beat until smooth.

Another frosting recipe my family has used since buttercream is usually too sweet is 1 package pudding any flavor and 1 carton of whipping cream. You can use the stuff in the freezer section. Or you can use a pint of whipped topping and add to desired consistancy. Beat until smooth and works great for decorating. Good Luck hope these help.

You can reduce sugar by almost half in almost all recipes without a huge difference. We do that in almost anything we make from scratch.

My daughter is Type I diabetic and I have found a really yummy pie for her. You can use whatever type of crust you like, but crumb crusts are the tastiest. Actually, for my daughter I don't use a crust and she doesn't miss it. The bottom layer is cream cheese mixed with some Splenda and vanilla; add enough to cut the tart of the cream cheese and make the mixture taste like cheesecake. The second layer is sugar free chocolate pudding and the last layer is cool whip. A friend of mine made this for her diabetic husband and loved it. She did say she would probably mix cream cheese with cook whip for the top layer to make it thicker. You could also use real cream mixed with Splenda for the top layer if you aren't worried about the fat.

I think the best thing with sugar is moderation and what types of sugar they are getting. Don't forget that refined sugars exist in white bread, bagels, etc. If you make sugar taboo as my mom did, then it becomes that much more of a necessity later in life. They do make diabetic cake mixes that are sugar free. Another suggestion is a dessert pizza. Those are a blast. The kids can help, it's easy and you decide what goes on it. Fruit bars are another fantastic option if you use low syrup canned fruit and thicken it yourself. I like recipezaar.com when I need a recipe. The last thing I will tell you is exercise!!! This is still the most underrated part of staying healthy and really helps keep those insulin levels stable. Peace, S.

You should possibly try substituting ZSweet in any of your recipes that call for sugar. It is amazing how much this product tastes like real sugar even though it's not. The makers of it are dedicated to offering a healthy sweetener. Check it out at www.zsweet.com
