18 Month Old Son Wets Through Everything!

Help! My son is constantly wetting through his diapers. I have spoken with the doctor; he's not diabetic, etc. He does drink a lot and I do change him often, but it is unreal! (My cousin once said to me "Wow, he pees a lot!" and she has kids of her own.) We've switched him from soft spout sippy cups to firm spout, so he drinks slower and less throughout the day. But overnight he always pees through. We give him his last drink over an hour before bedtime, he wears Huggies size 5 night diapers (he's 30lbs & they are for 27lbs +). During the day we use Pampers and have to change him every 1-2 hours. We've tried different brands, with Luvs we were changing him every 1/2 hour! Does any one have any sort of advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. I have tried giving him more water only. I had been giving him very watered down juice whenever he asked for a drink. He usually takes about 5 big swallows of his sippy before he realizes it is water and then he hides it and comes back and asks me for a drink. When I go find the water and give it back to him he sips it and then sets it down and that seems to be enough. So I do think he was asking for drinks more for the taste of juice than the thirst. He is still wetting a lot, but it is a little more managable.
Thanks again!

Shannon,
i'm only a few months late with some advise but hope it'll come in handy. My 21 month old son is in size 6 diapers, i found size 5 he was leeking out of. He's not a big boy, about 33 lbs., 34" tall. But at night i put a sanitary napkin inside his diaper. I use a thick one to help absorb the wetness. When he wakes up, he's soaked, but most of the time has not leaked thru.

When trying to get him to stop drinking all the time, you should try offering him water only in his cup if he asks for a drink. That way you're still giving him a drink and it's up to him if he wants to drink it. Sometimes they don't want to drink water when they're used to milk or juice and will stop drinking so much that way. If he's already drinking water then you'll just have to cut out the drinking "cold turkey"!

What is he drinking?, without knowing that advice may not work....hopefully it is water, if not, that is your first problem.

Hi Shannon,
You say he drinks a lot. What'S. lot? Is he constantly sipping throughout the day? If so, that's probably the problem. What comes out is usually relative to what goes in. Even if his last drink is an hour before bed, he may have fluids from before that he's releasing at night. I'd say if he's drinking all throughout the day, try to cut back a little. Especially as you get closer to bed time and see what happens. Good luck :o)

I agree with Katie. Cut back on his fluids. He might be drinking out of habit more then from being thirsty. A security kind of thing, I don't know. if that doesn't help I would talk to a urolgest (You know a ... Pee DR.LOL I can't spell).

Shannon,

If his doctor say he is in good health....don't worry so.
Could be worse. He doesn't have any rash? Strong burn urine?
Sounds like his kineys are working like they should.
So, I am thinking that the only time he over wets himself is at night? Because you change frequent when he's up? Ok.
I am thinking he sleeps good at night and you don't want to wake him up?
I know....I am assuming. I would put plastic over his crib matress...then a crib sheet over it. PJ's that snap apart.
If any undershirt...just a t-shirt. Just to make those night changes easier. You could try those lined training pants...if they still sell them. could help while out.
Look at the bright side....maybe he will be easier potty training for pre-school!
Everything is in "Stages" some are good, some we could live without but mom's try to deal with it all!
I have 2 boys...1 girl. I always wanted a girl (watch what you wish for!LOLS! God, gave only 1...knowing that would be my limited. My oldest son, is 21 yrs.old (6 ft)and a Marine...college grad. My younger son is going to be 11 yrs.old and is as tall as me (5'3 ft)....wears a sz 7 men's shoes! My youngest...and only girl is 9 yrs.old.
Enjoy your little man....because it won't be long. Take tons of photos!! Scrap them. I am an addicted Scrapbooker!

My son had the same problem. Overnight we used the next size up sometimes as well as this insert I found at Wegmans. It's been a couple years now, but I think they were called Clouds or something. The package is sold right there with the diapers. They look like long maxipads, actually, and you just slip them in the diaper for extra protection overnight. After a while he just didn't need them anymore.
Hope this helps and that you can find them!

my three year old just got out of diapers but before that she was always wet in a diaper. of course i changed her all the time but it seemed crazy to me how much she peed. anyway, as long as there is nothing physically wrong with him i don't think there'S. thing wrong. i always thought my daughter must just have a really small bladder, and even now that she's using the potty she probably goes every hour or so. it's probably a good idea to continute to limit fluids a little bit before bed but otherwise, he's got to drink! and i think we'd much prefer a kid who drinks when he's bored to eating when he's bored.
