Happy Veteran’s Day!

For some of us this holiday translates to “no school for the kids, what on earth are we gonna do today?” But for the military moms—and sisters, and daughters, and wives—in the Mamapedia community, Veteran’s Day holds a much greater significance. It’s a day to give pause, take a breath, and reflect on the sacrifices—whether it’s time apart, worry, or something far greater—that have been made for the sake of our country’s freedom.

Many members of our community have expressed a desire to get more involved this Veteran’s Day. If you’re one of them, but don’t have the time to hunt for opportunities to express your appreciation for veterans or active-duty soldiers, we’ve done your homework for you. Here are a few of our favorite programs and networks where you can donate, raise awareness, volunteer, or just add yours to the voices of thanks.

Grace After Fire We love this program. It’s designed to help the bravest moms we know: women veterans who have served the U.S. military and are now returning to their homes. Grace Under Fire provides guidance and resources to help them acclimate to their equally important roles as mothers, wives, and daughters.

Oprah Winfrey Network: Thank a Veteran Whether you have a family member in the military or you’re just in awe of everything our troops do for us, you can upload a video with your personal message of thanks.

Wounded Warrior Project This project provides support to soldiers who were injured in the line of duty. Get involved by joining their volunteer network, becoming a corporate sponsor, making a donation, or registering a fundraiser event.

AnySoldier.com Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference. Help to boost troops’ morale by sending care packages to active duty soldiers.

VFW This respected organization has been around since 1899, and has done some amazing work for U.S. military veterans. Visit their site to find out how you can help further their efforts to recognize and reward those who have served.

Cell Phones for Soldiers If you have an old cell phone lying around it’s virtually useless to you, but invaluable to soldiers who are overseas and can’t contact their loved ones. Donate your old phones and help them to stay connected.

USO Is a time-honored non-profit that provides support and entertainment to the U.S. military. Help out by volunteering at an event or greeting homecoming troops. Or donate to their holiday care package program that helps service people celebrate holidays in even the most remote locations.

Whether you’re able to make a donation, send a care package, or simply post a message of thanks, the important thing is that you find a moment to take part in the spirit of gratitude that will ring across the nation today.
