I love my OB, but am interested in maybe using a midwife when I get pregnant with my second child. I'm 'entertaining' the thought of having a non-medicated delivery because I had an allerigic reaction to the epidural with my first child. Any recommendations on midwives or doulas in the Columbus area? (I live off Bethel Rd.....anywhere close to that would be great :-)
Hi,
My daughter was delivered by an AWESOME mid-wife. Being a first time mom, I was scared to death, but she made the experience so wonderfully calming...very warm, caring, and sensitive to all of my needs. Her name is Carol O'Connor and she is with Professionals for Women's Health. They have a few mid-wives and I know Ranie is a fav. too...usually a wait to get in to see her she is so popular They have 3 locations. One on Olentangy River RD, one near Polaris, and one in dublin on n. high st. Check out their site here: www.pwhealth.com I can't say enough great things about their practice, and I know I am not alone. If you check out the recommendation page on this site, a few people have also been there and have nothing but good things to say. Good luck!
I also go to Professionals for Women's Health. My son was delivered by Rainie, she is wonderful! But the whole staff there is as well. I also recommend them. Good luck!
I also use Professionals for Women's Health. I have had positive experiences with them and enjoy the mix of doctors and midwives.
I concur Professionals for Women's Health are awesome!!
I did NOT like Professionals for Women's Health. I felt like a number, all of my appointments with them were with different Nurse Practitioners (never saw a real midwife) and were in different locations. They never knew me at all. It was very very impersonal. I went to New Life Midwives in Marysville, it's a bit of a drive but soooooooo worth it. It is a non-profit midwife group. They consult a doctor when necessary but do not work FOR a doctor. My doula volunteered as a receptionist there and she was also FANTASTIC. I'm going to go ahead and tell you my whole experience so you can see what a difference they made. When I went to PWH I was sent to three different locations, I was rushed through appointments and I never once saw a midwife. Finally at 4 months I said no way, this is not what I want. So I went to New Life. It is a small office with a comfy beautiful waiting area and the receptionist/office manager in the room with you, she is chatty and nice and played with my older kids. There is also a toy room there for the older kids. Then I met with both midwives, they alternated appointments so I got to know both of them so I would be comfortable with both when the time came. They are both warm and loving and were great with my older kids. My boys got to "help" with finding the baby's heartbeat with the Doppler and my oldest became a professional at measuring my tummy. Then the office manager would come get my boys to play in the play room while we got to the stuff that my boys didn't need to see. I hired Lori as my doula when I was about 8 months along because my husband, even after having had 2 kids, had no idea what to do or how to help. SHe came ot our home to meet us and go over labor and pain management methods. She even does labor refresher courses in your home. Her prices are REALLY reasonable (my husband jokes that he would have paid her twice as much for what she did)and she uses a sliding scale based on income up to her cap. We did not qualify for her reduced rate but even her full price was extremely reasonable. When the time came I went to the hospital and Lori and the midwife were there to greet me. I went directly to my room (no preadmission crap) then Lori helped my husband help me. She didn't take over, she showed him how to help, she also gave encouragement and kept me from giving up. I had no medication at all and she was so supportive, in fact the whole staff at Marysville were very supportive of my decision to not have medication (I was bullied into an epidural at St. Ann's) The midwife was always in and out (she had another patient in labor) but she did not do like the OB's where she comes in at the last second to catch the baby, she was very involved in the whole thing. She even came in at one point and just held my hand and breathed with me. Well after I had my daughter, completely drug free and wonderful, they were all still there and loving and comforting and our doula even went to get my husband some Burger King for breakfast! Marysville is a wonderful hospital and because they do not see the huge numbers of delivery patients like some of the other major hospitals I had two nurses all to myself, the rooms were HUGE, and I was not just a number in a baby factory. I can not say enough about the difference having midwives who care and a phenomenal doula makes!!! Personally I would stay away from PWH if you are trying to have a more personal caring delivery and pregnancy. New Life knew who I was each time I called with a question and they knew my kids and my husband, I didn't have to keep reminding them of who I was. If you would like their number let me know I would be more than happy to help!!!
You should try St Anns hospital The midwife are great I am having Twins so I don't have the midwife any more but they are great Let me Know
I am 35 weeks pregnant and I go to professional womens health and I love them. I went to them when I was 5 months pregnant. Liza canowitz is my midwife and she has been the sweetest most understanding person I have had through my whole pregnancy. She is at the Olentangy office. She listens and addresses all my problems. I never leave that office feeling uncomfortable about anything. She even listens to my personal problems with tissues and a hug. This is my second baby and I have never been so happy with my discion to go there. when you go there you pick your location and you pick who you want to see. Even the receptionists are sweet as can be!!!
