Whats the best way to boil water to add formula

Dear Moms,
I ve been told that boiling the water on those electric tea kettle pots is unsafe cause it can cause cancer. Can you please tell me whats the best way to boil water for my baby? I need to boil the water to prepare her formula and with all honesty can recall anything else with what boil it!!!
Thank you all,Teresa

Why do you need to boil your water? Is it well water? As for tea kettles causing cancer, that's a new one to me!! Soon they'll be telling us the water itself causes cancer.

Boiling water?? Never heard that or the cancer thing.

Teresa,

Can't understand why persons would say that about the electric tea kettle. Everything seems to cause cancer these days - LOL. You can always try the regular kettle that you can put to boil on the stove. When my son was a baby, we would boil enough water and store in a large vacuum flask which kept the water hot for the entire day to mix his formula. Hope this helps.

A regular tea kettle and/or pot will do.

Hi Teresa,
I have two kids who grew up on formula and I never boiled water for preparing it. I used bottled baby water (sold in gallons in stores) to mix formula instead. It was a lot easier. But if you still want to boil it, I guess any kind of pot will do the job and I've never heard about the cancer thing...
Good luck
Marija

Teresa,

I was doing this for my daughter till atleast her six week check up, when I finally asked my pediatrician the same thing... He laughed and said, "You don't have to do that anymore." And just as quickly as I asked, I stopped. No compliants, and I'm much happier. Congrats on the new baby!

As long as you are on public water supply, I see no reason why you would need to boil water. The tap water from a public water supply is required by law to meet primary and secondary drinking water standards. I never boiled water with either one of my babies.

I boil water in the microwave always in a glass cup.

Out of curiousity, is there a medical reason the water has to be boiled? If not, than you can buy purified "nursery water" by the gallon at the grocery store if you are trying to avoid tap water. If you are just trying to warm up the water then a bottle warmer works really great too.

Kristin

Boil it in a glass measuring cup in the microwave. It's quicker and you can just leave it set in there until it cools off before use. Honestly, I never boiled my girls water. The doctor told me if you have good water there is no reason to boil it. I had my well checked by the health department and they said my water was great. No need to boil. You might want to get your water checked out.

Dear Teresa,

If you are in the City of Ft. Lauderdale and on city water, then you don't need to boil the water unless your pediatrician says you need to...the water is perfectly fine.

You also don't need to actually heat the water to make formula. If your daughter likes it a bit warm, just use very luke warm water to make it. Put formula powder in bottle, put water in and shake it.

I never warmed my son's bottles, didn't have time and he didn't care.

Best wishes, Christine

PS My pediatrician told me not to use bottled water to make formula because it doesn't have flouride in it and that is the reason so many toddlers have cavitities these days. We just had our 3 year old dentist appt and so far, no cavities!!! YEAH!

We got one of those stand alone coolers that have the cold and hot water - where you put the bottled water on top. We put the powder in the bottle and add hot water 1/2 way. Then shaked it to mix and dissolve. Then we added some cold water to make it luke warm. This saved us more time than putting it in the microwave (yes, I put baby bottles in the microwave - I'm sure someone will gasp. I did that with four babies, 2 my own and 2 sibilings - they turned out just fine).

That's what we did.

Is there a reason that it needs to be boiled?

Boil the water for formula? I've never heard of doing that unless your water is unsafe. If you're on city water, you shouldn't have to worry about it. OR you could just purchase nursery water, if you're really concerned. We always gave my son bottles at room temp, and that was fine w/him.

You probably should not be boiling water any longer. If you continue to do so then you are not allowing your daughter to build up a natural immunity to germs. Use bottled water you can buy by the gallon or if you are on city water you can use it straight from the tap.

You don't need to boil the water; you can use regular spring water, or, as long as you live in a place with clean water, you can use it straight from the tap.

We just used jugs of spring water at room temperature. No muss no fuss.

You could probably use tap water - they say in some cases it's better than bottled. We always used "Nursery Water" (though later I was told it was the same as spring - but I felt better using it ;>)

When my kids were that little we didn't boil the water. I used bottled water and it was fine. Try that.

We never boiled- we just used bottled, much easier overall!

I don't boil the water, I make my son's bottles with the same water that I drink (Brita thing in the fridge 'cause it tastes better). I caught him licking the outside of the trash can the other day, really, boiling water is totally pointless after that.
