My sister has been dealing with strange sores on my nephews legs since Sept 2007. He went hunting with his dad and came back with some horrible chigger bites. They have not healed since and he itches them unconciously while he's sleeping. She's been to multiple dr's but none seem to have a cure for her. Has anyone had this problem with there kiddos.

Poor little guy.
I use to take care of a little girl who was allergic to chiggers and masquitos so if she was bit by one at my house I would dab some vinegar on them. It only smells for a short time. Do this several times a day and they will dry up.
Hope this helps.
My sister had a similiar problem with her daughter. The doc told her that it was from the natural staph that is on our skin - not the dangerous one that everone is worried about. They prescribed an antibiotic ointment called bacitracin and they healed right up. As far as the scratching at night try to get the child to wear mittens to bed if they are willing. That way the sores do not get "scratched" causing an even worse infection. Hope that helps! Esther
This sounds more like seed tick bites than chiggers. They are really bad around the Midwest now due to all the deer. I as well as a lot of people have an allergic reaction to them. That sounds like what is happening with your nephew. Your sister might suggest that possibility to the Dr. I use antibiotic ointment on them and watch for a rash when I get bitten. When the bite is too bad the Dr. has put me on doxycycline. Hope this helps.
My daughter's bites did that several years ago; we were told to scrub them with Dial soap while bathing and scrub under her fingernails with a nailbrush and Dial as well; Then at night, she slept in my husband's tube socks so she couldn't dig at them; she had scars for a while, but soon disappeared and Dial seems to be a cure for a lot of sores! However, if it becomes Infitigo (sp?)he will have to take an oral antibiotic to clear it up.
The only thing that seems to work on Chigger bites for my kids is to put clear fingernail polish over them, the idea is to smother them. The fingernail polish flakes off easily & it has to stay on until they are healed, so I have also used superglue(just a dot over the bite, but you don't want to put that on an open sore, it stings badly) I hope this helps...
I've always use clear finger nail polish to cover and smother my chigger bites. If he's been scratching and the sores are open this technic may be painful. They do however have actual chigger medicine at walmart that does the same thing. (get the clear medicine that drys like polish - the cream never worked for me)
I would ask the doctor to test for a staph infection.
Hello Jessica. Has she tried any cortizone on them? Also there is something that is called Sulfer. U can get it at the pharmacy at Walmart. It is a yellow powder substance and it does smell like sulfer. U just rub that on the infected areas. My husband has used this for chigger bites and it has worked very well. If that doesnt help I would suggest a Dermotologist. Something else might be going on with that. I hope this helps and Good Luck.
You might want to try Tea Tree Oil. That stuff works wonders for many things!
not sure how old he is, but here is what a book i got from my doctor a few years back called "Take Care of Yourself" says about chiggers....
keep the sores clean and soak them with warm water twice daily. Cuprex, RID and A200 applied immediately may help kill the larvae, but the itch will persist. Corticosteroid creams (Cortaid, Lanacort, etc.) may be tried but are not usually much help; dont use these for a long time without a doctor's advice. Nail polish is said to give some relief from itching, but hasnt been scientifically proven. Doctors will usually prescrive lindane (Kwell, Scabene, etc.) which is perhaps somewhat more effective than the corticosteroid creams, but doesnt stop the itching either, and Lindane is too strong to be used more than 2 times, a week apart. Antihistamines make the patient drowsy and arent often used unless intense itching persists despite home treatment with pain relievers, warm baths, oatmeal soaks(Aveeno, etc.), and calamine lotion.
My son and I had the same problem. My doctor prescribed Triamcinolone 0.5% and it worked! I keep a tube for the next attack of mutant chiggers.
Apparently this is a recent problem. He knew exactly what to prescribe because his sister had them too.
Don't waste your time on other methods as I did.
we find that covering the bites with clear finger nail polish stops the itching and give the bites time to heal and the polish wears off
Believe or not try clear nail polish on the bites.
I would try talking to your doctor about using a prescription for (sorry can't remember the medical term for it), body lice. There is something one can take baths in.
Several years ago, I broke out in welts from itching so much. I don't recall having anything that looked like chigger bits; however, my doctor said it was apparent that some (similar to fleas) was eating at my skin from the inside out. While we had outdoor pets at that time and a grass lawn between the house and the car, including a wood desk, I rarely was outdoors which seemed odd to be for picking it up.
Outside of that, I have had chigger bits twice since living in Missouri, but don't recall what I used to get rid of them successfully. The thing to figure out if it really is chigger bites you are dealing with or something else. Once you find the problem you can better treat it and not just going after the symptoms which can lead to a reoccurance.
Okay this is all going to seem wierd, but I grew up in the Hill Country of Texas, and chiggers are as common as cedar trees there. They're everywhere. There's several things you can try. First there is a med. called chigger aid and that sometimes helps, but here are some unconventional things...you can try dog shampoo, I know I know wierd but that's what my mom used on us. Also try finger nail polish on the areas because it will suffocate the chiggers. What happens is the chiggers burrow their painful selves into the skin and when you scratch they just react to that making you itch more so the fingernail polish will dry out the areas and possibly kill them. Finally you can try sulfur. My dad owned a hardware store so that's how we got it, but that's what I used before I'd go into the "woods" so to speak and chiggers never bothered me from that point on and it got rid of the bites I already had. So long story short...chigger aid, fingernail polish, dog shampoo, or sulfur. Personally I'd recommend the sulfur. It smells but I NEVER had a problem with chiggers again! Hope this helps, good luck!
Unless he is continuing to go outside and running into them I am seriously wondering if they are still chigger bites.
I live on a 300 acre farm and chiggers/misquitoes/ticks are frequent issues. We have gotten bites frequently during the spring/summer months. Normally you don't get chiggers in the winter unless you live in a warmer climate than I do, which you may.
Other things to think about are flea bites, we moved into a house that had indoor pets when my oldest was a baby, and he was absolutely bitten all over his legs before we realised what was happening. We noticed them also, but not before they made lunch out of my poor baby. We had to bomb the house and then let it air out.
Also could it be bed bugs?? Sounds gross but they really are out there. Airing out mattresses on warm to hot summer days helps to kill off those critters. New mattresses could help also if you can afford to get new ones.
If the child has seen Doctors they have probably been watching out for staph infections. I think the symptoms would be a little different if staph was an issue.
An old remedy that seems to have worked for us a lot of times, not always, is to put vasoline over the raised itchy area and put a bandaid over it. After several hours you should be able to remove the bandaids and have the child take a bath or shower to remove the vasoline. Supposedly the chigger needs to be able to breathe air easily, the Vasoline prevents that and it will try to go through the Vasoline to find air to breathe and it gets stuck in the ointment/salve. Seems to work for us most of the time. Hope something helps, definately sounds like something is causing an issue

I know this may sound wierd. But, my father was a hunter when I was growing up and we always put clear fingernail polish on his chigger bites. It suffocates the chiggers and they die. Hope it helps.
