Starting up or looking for a support group in Elgin area

We have a son with Asperger's and my husband and I were wondering if there are any support groups in the ELgin area. My son is 18 and was diagnosed with ADHD at first when he was younger, but within two years ago he was rediagnosed with Aspergers. We have looked and looked and now are out of contacts for any help with this. We are having issues with him and it is getting worse as he is getting older.

I don't have any experience with this particular diagnosis, but I have dealt with special education with younger kids. You may want to ask his school counselor or special ed teacher if they know of any support groups for kids with aspergers or other similar issues. You could also look at your local park district brochure and see if they have any NISRA information in it and call them to inquire about such groups. Does you son see any doctors for this? You may want to talk to your pediatrician or doctor and see if they know of any. Are there any local hospitals you can call and just inquire with the front desk or try looking up some doctors that may deal with this issue. Try looking up yahoo and go to their groups and see if they have anything in your area for this. You could always start up your own group. The doctor that diagnosed him should know of some groups. Also, try meetup.com and see if there are any groups in your area. These are just some ideas. There are probably groups out their for kids with special needs, so try to find those to start. His school and doctor would probably be your best bets. Good luck!

Is he still in school? Don't they have any programs at school? Have you checked with your local school district to see if they could at least give you some names of psychologists or programs that might exist in Elgin. My brother has a son with the same thing, but he's only 9 and the school has provided their son with a counselor of sorts. They also looked up techniques on the internet to use with their son to help him cope with intimacy issues, his hand-eye coordination, and his basic coping skills in stressful situations. He's doing great thus far.
