How do I block my spiral staircase so my daughter can't climb it? We have gates on all our other stairs but can't figure out how to protect this so thought I would reach out to the collective wisdom of the Mamasource community.
I should clarify that this is a metal, free standing, staircase so can't screw or drill into it for the mounting brackets and there is no wall to attach the gate to.
put up any type gate really. use zip ties to hold in place on the railings. my girlfriend does this and it works great
check out the right start website, if I remember correctly they have several gate options. We had trouble with our stair case and we ended up finding some great gates at Menards.
If the rails on either side are not big enough, attach a 2X2 piece of wood to each side with zip ties. We have a swing gate and drilled the end pieces directly to the wood. To remove, just cut the zip ties!
Try One Step Ahead.com They usually have the things you cannot find in any of the stores. Good Luck!
We put gates at the top and bottom. On the sides, we used zip ties to install clear plastic "walls" on the bottom two stairs (so that the baby can't circumvent the gate and enter the stairwell on the side). You can buy the clear plastic sheeting at http://www.rightstart.com/global/store/product~item~281~dept~safety~cat~baby+proofing+and+home+safety.html or on Ebay.
Depending on your staircase...I would strongly recommend the retract-a-gate (http:www.retract-a-gate.com). I know that Onestepahead.com has something similar but it is not as good.
The nice thing about retract-a-gate is that it can cover larger or smaller areas...is made of mesh, so it can even go around curved entrances.
It is, by far, the best gate I've ever had. Ever.
Strap oak mounts to the railings which provide safe surface to mount gate.
I bought my gates and had them installed by a local company. You could get someone to come out and show you what/how would work in your situation. Protectiveparentschildproofing.com. Good luck.
