i am seeking kindergarten options for my daughter who is autistic. does anyone have information on special needs programs that do not place the children in large classes with mainstream students?
I don't know of any however I know that the public school in Cobb County GA provides a parapro per child with autism so if your child is the only child with autism in K more than likely they would have someone support your child and follow your child throughout school in that way she is never left to take care of herself. The kids in the classroom are usually very supportive. Ask the school what are their procedures. They are trying to integrate the kids so they have a sense of nomalcy.
Have your child evaluated at Marcus Institute so you can be specific about meeting her needs. Meet witn the special education coordinator for your school system. Choose a school that will implement the recommendations with support from your special education program for your county. Your child has the absolute right to these services based on her diagnosis. Parents Educating Parents and Professionals, Inc. (PEPP, Inc.) and the Georgia Advocacy Office can teach you how to advocate for your child. The more you do now the more success she will have over her lifetime.
