Hello my name is Tami and I live in the Elk Grove area. I have an 8 year old daughter with Aspergers or Pervasive Developemental Disorder along with ADD and some OCD. I would like to talk with other moms who are going through the same thing. I also wonder how you deal with behavioral issues. My daughter has a lot of anger and impulse control problems. She also takes medication to help with her moods. She was extremely emotional before, now it is manageable. She can be extremely loving too.
It is very difficult sometime with homework etc. She sees a psychiatrist and a therapist as well as gets OT and Speech at school.
Do you have any helpful tips or do you just want to share stories? I think talking with someone who understands will help.
I dont have any children with Aspergers or PDD but I do have a 9 year old son that was diagnosed with ADHD and response delay. After countless attempts by his first grade teacher I did take him to a therapist and try the medications (which only made him worse in the depression area). I even pulled him from school and home schooled for a while. He does get homeopathic treatment which does help...I don't expect a cure or a "perfect" child. We probably arent experiencing totally the same issues...but the homework thing and the impulse control and its a daily struggle in our home...expecially having other children younger than him that don't have any "issues". I have the school asking me to put him in their therapy program. Have you found any of the therapy helpful...I just find it hard to pay $80 co-pay each visit and for them to just keep prescribing meds. Its very difficult in our home to allow the other siblings nice things like Nintendo DS and fun stuff like that when we know he is going to break or lose his. That part doesn't seem to get much better. The hard part for me is not getting angry when he does something so off the wall "stupid" and they absolutely have no idea why they did it and meant no harm. I am lucky that he does well with other children and has a huge heart....no tact yet but working on it. I have found that as he gets older...I find myself apologizing to other parents like at the park alot less. I am wondering if I had met you a few years back through the homeschool co-op at a park day. I remember meeting a lady with a daughter who I believe has a daughter with your issues. I no longer belong to the co-op but my neighbor does and I could always ask her if she knows...if that was not you. I just have to keep telling myself that we are blessed with these kids for a reason.
Hi,
Are you familiar with F.E.A.T.? Families for Early Autism Treatment? I know they provide support and parent to parent connections for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. They have an Elk Grove chapter also. Warmline Resource Center also does the parent to parent connections also. Also, if you are with Alta Regional Center, your service coordinator may be able to connect you with other moms in your area.
I am new to Mamasource and saw your posting under the AS link. I do hope that all has worked out for you and has improved with your little girl.
I am a single mother with a 4 y/o going on 5. He started preschool last year and since December, his teacher has mentioned some different behaviors compared to other children his age.
If you don't mind, could you shed some light on me as to some of the signs and symptoms your daughter showed as you were trying to determine if she, or what type of behavior issue she has.
I would truly appreciate it. His teacher, unprofessionally, had spit out the AS diagnosis based on what she researched on the web. But, I don't know. I would just like to get a general view from you or someone, and then I will try to correlate and mention what my son's teacher says my son is showing/not showing.
