My 8 yr old son with Aspergers started at La Pluma Elementary's Special Day Class (SDC). He used to attend another school from K-2 in a full-inclusion with aids but his behavior issues got in the way, so we're trying a SDC. Any info/feedback about the school & principal/teachers will be appreciated. Since we're new there, I wanted to find out more.
I don't know about the school, but I am telling all moms dealing with Autism issues about the social networking site http://autismspeaksnetwork.ning.com/ hosted by Autism Speaks --- its kind of like a myspace for parent, professionals, and individuals dealing w/ ASD. Again I don't know your district, but I do teach high school and would suggest you stay on top of your son's academics and not have him in SDC during high school if possible -- generally w/ Aspergers you can get the behaviors under control and he is likely talented in some area. The downside to SDC is that by high school many of the low functioning (ie still at 2-3 reading by age 15) students have been lost to gangs and overall I just don't see them making progress academically. Even though he is only 8, it is not too early to plan for his future. Find his strengths and weaknesses and set him up to succeed at the highest level possible. By the way my high school as a class lower than SDC, it is for more severe cases of Downs and other impairments and we just started an Autism class -- look for classes that fit your son's abilities.
