Our Dog ate 1 Hershey's Milk Chocolate Kiss...

Hi, so our family dog is about 7 to 8 pounds and he ate one Hershey's Kiss Milk Chocolate with Almond... should I be concerned?

Ugh, call your vet.

I would contact a veterinarian to ask them.

Welcome to mamapedia, Esteffany.

Have you contacted your veterinarian yet? If not? I would.

I would expect some loose stools over the next 24 hours. I’d call my vet.

Good heavens - by the time you get responses from the internet, your dog could be dead!

Whenever a dog eats chocolate, onion or other toxic substances/foods, you immediately call your vet! Immediately. If the vet is closed, there will be an emergency number on their answering message for an animal hospital. In fact, you should have that second number programmed into your phone and posted with other emergency numbers. If something needs to be done, you’d be given instructions, usually to force the dog to throw up with specific substances (such as hydrogen peroxide via dropper or turkey baster). Ask your vet what you should keep on hand - in an emergency, there is no time to go out to the store and start purchasing supplies.

Please sit down with your vet for a lesson on proper care of your pet, including prevention and immediate response. Your decision to go on line and ask amateurs, and then wait wait wait for feedback, makes me think you are a very new pet owner or a teen who let the dog get into the chocolate.

From now on, put the chocolates in a cabinet and only eat them at the table.

My neighbor’s teen had a bunch of chocolate bars, the kind students sell to make money for a school club. She left them on her bed. The dog ate a bunch of them. We did peroxide (in amounts based on the dog’s weight and the vet’s instructions), but he didn’t throw up in time, so they raced to the animal hospital, where the dog was treated with a number of things. He stayed there for 2 days. The bill was $900. That teen gave up her babysitting money for 2 years to pay it off.

Be smart.

yes, it’s always a concern, but not a panic. i’ve had dogs eat grapes and chocolate and raisins and all manner of no-nos over the years. they’ve all been okay. but if you notice lethargy or excessive vomiting, of course you get to the vet pronto.

but he’ll probably be fine.

Let us know how your dog is. Milk chocolate is less toxic than dark or baking chocolate, but your dog is pretty small. Here’s some info: Chocolate Is Poisonous To Dogs | Pet Poison Helpline®

Your dog should have no problems at all. My daughter’s friend is a vet tech so when my dog snatched part of a chocolate bar a quick call to him set my mind at ease. Milk chocolate isn’t great for him but one kiss isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you keep dark chocolate safely out of his reach.

Hopefully your dog is okay, Esteffany. I hope he didn’t die. Most likely not, However next time, if there ever is a next time?? CALL YOUR VET!!!

Unless any of the people on this site are vets, how would you expect them to know? Call your veterinarian’s emergency hotline and ask them!
