My daughter's name is Mackenzi Rose. I always loved the name since I was little & watched One Day at a Time with Mackenzie Phillips. Rose was both my Grandmothers first names. Since I had my daughter almost 10 yrs ago Mackenzi(with alternate spellings) has been increasingly popular. I love the name Mikayla, if my son was a girl his name would have been Mikayla Jordan. Good Luck!
Check out baby name books - they can have really interesting names in there. And if there's a particular ethnicity in your family, do some research there -cause your own family roots might give you a treasure of names.
We have a daughter named Courtlyn Geneva which is pretty original. (But it gets a great response when we tell people) It was actually after a boy name in our family, Courtland. We are about to have another daugher, and her name will be Mallory Rose, which is not unique per se, but certainly not a common name these days. Good luck! I definitely thing going through your geneology is a fun way to do it, and even someone's last name way back, makes for a great first name now!! ~Amber~
When my husband and I were discussing names for our daughter we thought of Isabella Skye, but then I started to hear the name Zoey and my mother told me she was going to name me Jennifer Elaine, so I just combined the names Zoey and Elaine and our daughters name became Zoelaine Skye, we call her Zoey for short. Just try to think of some names you could combine together to get a unique name! Good Luck and Congrats!
For a girl, I like: Amelia, Avery, Hannah, Gracie, Olivia, Kinsey, Kimber, Laurel, Quinn, Shelby, Trinity and Delaney.
For a boy, I like: Tanner, Tucker, Hudson, Sawyer, Noah, Coit, Wyatt, Rhett, Gage and Eli.
With the exception of Courtlyn, all of the names given are pretty common (coming from a teacher). I would use a baby name book or look one up online and check there. Another good idea is to look at meanings. Decide what meaning you want your child's name to have and look it up to see what all names have that meaning. Good luck, and congratulations.
Oh, one thing I've noticed is that when you think it's unique, you start hearing it more often. That's how it was with our son. We had only met one other person with the same name years ago, and now we hear it all the time. . .he even has a boy in his class at church with the same name. Mikayla is such a cool name. I've been hearing it a lot more lately.
I'm not so great with unique boys names but for girls Brynne, Brynley (different spellings), Landry, Linley, Britten, Willow, Marigold (one of my favs), Cora, Martine, Gracelynn, January, Friday, etc are some more unique names. Although some are becoming more popular. I really suggest looking online or in a baby book. Sometimes an older name that has gone out of date sounds unique since it's not a popular name anymore. I'd give you some boy names, but I really don't know very many unique ones. Most of the ones I've seen or liked are fairly popular. Good luck though!:)
the name you chose is pretty unique
My daughter's name is Anya Grace. Anya is Russian for Anna. You can also spell it the German way, Anja.
Anna means grace so we jokingly say she needed a double dose of grace to thrive with her overly zealous older brother. If name meanings really affect the child's personality, then this one really did the trick. She is the most paitent easy going child I've ever met.
Check out babyname genie.com you put in your last name and it spits out names, some unique ones and eveb if commom then change the spelling like you did on Mikayla. Aor just have fun with some common ones. for a boy i love Alex Zander...you got 2 names in one. good luck!
I work in an elementary school and two unique names that comes to mind for a boy is River and Neveah (new va) which is heaven spelled backwards. (think of Neveah River-Heaven River...wow!)
When I was pregnant with my son 24 yrs ago I could not choose between Ameilia Nicole or Charlotte Missoura (pronounced just like the state only with sound like u in umbrella) which if a combination of great grandmothers names. Heaven would be unique for a girl also.
I am sure whatever you come up with the baby will be a precious blessing!
Good Luck!
Jami
hmmm, i can't really think of a Unique name. our 3 yr. old is named Emilee, so it's a common name just spelled different. For a boys name try "Tjadain." prounced jay-den.
Congratulations. My daughter's name is Autumn Dawn. When she was born I had only heard the name once a month before she was came. Now I hear it more often. So even if it is unique today, it may become more common. LOL But I still like it. Of course she's been called Amber, April, etc. My second daughter is named her Lacey Michelle. My grandchldren's names are Kaylyn Victoria and Reace Danielle. I liked the spelling of Reace. It looks like peace with an R. Fits her, too. The boys are traditional, Our boys have traditional names, Cameron, Patrick and Elijah. Took me 3 days to Name Cam after he came, we just knew he was a girl and he fooled us. Our friend had her baby this week and her name is Kinsey. That's cute. Good luck, would love to hear what name you choose.
Hi Emily,
When I was a teen, I babysat two children whose mother was from Australia. They had a very unique names:
The girl: Saionne (pronounced "say-oh-nee," with the stress on the middle syllable.)
The boy: Gry (rhymes with "dry.")
I don't remember what the meanings were for these names; it's been too long!
Leanne
My son's name is Quentin, and people always say what a wonderful unique name it is. My hubby and I were like you; wanted something "different." We loved Dylan and Jackson but those are so common these days! Didn't want him to be one of three or four in his class with that name. Good luck! :)
If we weren't using all J names I would name my coming son Harrison. It's not that unique, but no one else really has it (except my favorite actor : ) I also like Haven for a girl. A friend just named her daughter Quinn--- super cute.
My daughter is Jordan, but I wish I had spelled it Jordyn. I like boys names for girls.
I like Gage for a boy and London for a girl. Try looking online for names in other languages such as French, etc. Some of them are beautiful and different. I never liked having an unusually spelled name as all my life mine was either mispelled and/or mispronounced and it is tiring to have to spell and pronounce it every time you have to provide the information to someone new. That may not bother everyone but it always irked me so I have gone by a nickname my entire adult life. Just something to think about. Congratulations on having another baby. I'm sure you'll come up with a name that is wonderful.
I agree with the ladies who suggested looking back in your family's genealogy for unique names. There are all sorts of names lurkinjg back there on the family tree!
One of my great-grandmothers was named Juana, only they spelled it "Whanner." I'm not crazy about that one, but it would definitely be different. There are Paralees and Luvinas and Corellas on my dad's side. Again, not names that I am interested in, but certainly names that wouldn't be too common these days. I do sort of like "Eulalie," pronounced You-lay-lee, which was one of my mom's college friend's names. Finally, I went to college with a girl named "Sophronia," pronounced So-fro-nee-yah, and she went by "Fronie." It was an old family name from her family.
I'm sure there are boys' names in your family history that would be equally interesting. Good luck!
Edited to add: I just saw Shari's advice, and foreign languages have wonderful names. I love Solange and Mireille, for example. Beatrice is a sweet old name, but it sounds fantastic pronounced in Italian, "Bay-ah-treech-aye."
