Hi everyone!
Just wondering if anyone can give me an opinion on nickname spelling for my daughter. Her name is Gabriella, but we call her Gabby. I like the spelling Gabi better than Gabby - is it too weird? Will she be constantly correcting everyone?
Opinions, please!
Thanks,
Jill
Why don't you try Gabbie or Gabbi with two b's
I like Gabi or Gabbi. I think the "i" at the end is a nice change from the "norm". I feel it's more feminine, but that's just me. :)
I say to spell it how you want. If you can read, you should know how to say it if it's spelt Gabi. Plus, down the road, she may change the way she spells it herself. Good luck on your decision.
Oh I love that name! I have a good friend with that name and she uses Gabi for short. :)
I like Gabi too! It doesn't look like the person who gabs all the time (Gabby). And it uses only the letters in her name. No confussion here!

I really like Gabi... Its looks more updated, and will be easy to write.
If you do Gabby you'll rarely have to spell it for anyone, but since it's only a nickname you probably won't run into that problem anyways. Other than that I'd say to use whatever you want.

Hi, Jill!
I guess it really depends on whether you'd like people to pronounce it gabi (like gah-bee) or gabby (like gab-bee) Because that's how I would personally pronounce those spellings.
You will have to spell it out on certain occasions.
We've called my oldest and middle children by their nicknames and all their gifts come with that name on the tag. There is also the fact that some longer names are harder for little ones to spell out and you might want your daughter to go by her nickname in school. (Their names are the first words that they learn to spell usually)
My oldest is in 1st grade now and although she can spell her full first name (Victoria) it was much easier for everyone in earlier times because we called her Torri.
In the same way, my 3-year-old's name is Galatea and we have all KINDS of problems with her name. Her nick-name is Teya, with the 'y' placed in so that people don't accidently call her tea (as in the beverage).
Either way, you're the mom, so your word is law! Don't let anyone give you trouble about the spelling of your daughter's name!
My name is Nicole, but I have always gone by Niki. As you may know, there are MANY variations of Niki...Nikki (most common), Nicky, Nickie, Nikky, etc. The running joke in my family is that my Dad didn't know how to spell "Nikki" and left out one of the k's.
With that said, let me tell you about my name. I never had anyone confused about the pronunciation, but my name was always misspelled. When I was young I HATED that my name was misspelled on my school & sports awards -- BUT when I got to high school I thought it was COOL that my name was DIFFERENT. And now as an adult, I don't care one way or another.
I say, spell it how you want and if people misspell is just make lite of it. Spelling it different can be looked at as be "special".
i love nicknames. if my son would have been a girl the name would have been emily but we would have called her emi (emee). so i think gabi is a great nickname!!!!
I like Gabi better. Maybe Gabbi. The gabi may be said as Gabe(y). I know a cple Gabbys and one gabbi
Hi, Jill...
I've actually always seen Gabbie for a girl :) Whatever you choose, I'm sure she'll do great!
Blessings,
Vicki
My vote goes to Gabi too - not weird at all. It makes more sense to me - all the letters are in the full name. I have a similar issue w/ my little girl's name - she is Caitlyn but then if we call her "Kate" can we spell it "Cait" or "Cate" or ?? I may have to make a post too!
We also have a beautiful daughter named Gabriella, and we like the spelling Gabbie. I have seen Gabi used as vell. I wish you the best with your Little Darling whichever way you spell it-Heidi, Mother of 2 girls
I too have a nickname spelling problem. My oldest is Elycia and we call her Ely (Ellie). Everyone pronounces it Eligh, like a boys name. Maybe if we would have spelled it Elly, them ppl would not mix it up so much.
So I vote for Gabi, But maybe Gabbi.
Good luck!
Hi, Jill!
As someone who owns a business specializing in personalized Children's product, I encourage you to go with the regular Gabby spelling (even though I really like Gabi!). It is fun to be unique; however, we find that so often the child is disappointed because he/she cannot find anything with his/her name on it or else the spelling is incorrect and the child is disappointed. So, if finding personalized product is a concern for you...go with a traditional spelling. Thankfully, there are some personalized items out there you can put any name or spelling on and my husband and I find great satisfaction in helping our customers do this.

I love Gabi vs. Gabby too. It's very cute!

I love Gabi, My daughters name is Gabriella also. We didn't give her a nickname, but we were going to name her Abigail her nickname would have been Abi.
I personally like Gabby. If you are concerned with people spelling it wrong or concerned that it will bug her when she gets older, I would stick with Gabby for sure.
I am a Kristine that is ALWAYS being spelled Christine and it really bugs me.
