Luna Carpets

Hi Moms,

Has anyone used Luna carpet? I have carpet in my house that is driving me up the walls. It is off-white (it was like that when I moved in) but it gets dirty all the time, I spend too much money in having it cleaned. I was thinking of calling Luna and getting an estimate for hardwood floor or laminate floor. Has anyone had experience with laminate floor? I was thinking of placing either of these in high traffic places. Any ideas. Thanks.

Hi Frances,
We just refinished hardwood and bought new carpeting. We looked at both Luna and Empire because I am on bedrest for my pregnancy and cannot travel. Both of them are a total ripoff!! The prices we were quoted were 2-3x higher that what we had thought. They are willing to negotiate with you, but the last thing I want to do right now is haggle over carpet prices!! I found that Home Depot by far has the best prices and carries the exact same products. As far as wood v/s laminate I think it just depends on what look you like. We have laminate in the kitchen but hardwood on the rest of the first floor and the hardwood just looks SO MUCH nicer, but the laminate does a great job with wear and tear. Check under your carpet - there might already be wood there! Good luck,
Tracy

Hi!

We've never tried Luna but if you're thinking about doing hardwood floors we have the name of somebody who does it for CHEAP and they're really GOOD!!

Mary Beth

We just had Luna do our basement and found them to be VERY reasonable. They are very willing to work with you as far as price is concerned, so you can talk them down in price. Also, if you schedule an appt. online, it will also save you some $ off your total price as well.

We had carpet put in, so I do not have experience w/the laminate, but I would recommend Luna. Very clean, prompt and reasonable.

You should call Empire Carpets. You know, 588-2300 EMPIRE! They did my basement, and they did a fantastic job. They also do wood floors, (laminate) as well as windows, gutters and siding. They do great work! So nice, and nicely priced, too. It's always good to get more than one quote.

Good luck.

Hi Francis,
I just moved into a new house on 6/1 and the sellers used Luna to install new carpet b4 they left. I don't have a problem with the carpet, it is like a light tan so far so good. I took the carpet up in the dining room and had a lamiate floor put down. The floors looks great but you can't use wax on it. I have to use that Pledge cleaner followed by this wax made just for laminate floors from Home Depot which was expensive. What I noticed was even after applying it doesn't give the same shine as hardwood and you have to be careful about what you put on it as far as cleaning it may damage the floor. I have two kids one 16 and one 5 the 5yr old makes the most traffice sliding across the floor other than that it looks nice. I usually sweep it first then apply the Pledge cleaner and use that Home Depot wax every other month. Luna did a great job on the carpet I don't know how their prices vary for laminate flooring, also be careful of private contractors and being a single mom. I had to deal with one that tried to rip me off. So be careful its your money that will be spent not theirs.

Frances...
STAY AWAY FROM LUNA. It's a long long story, but in short we had them install carpeting in the master bedroom of our old house at the cost of $900. We have two large dogs and we talked to the salesman about our concerns with the dogs. He recommended berber carpeting. In less than 9 months, the carpeting was horrible. The dogs were not allowed in the room when they were muddy (they had their own room at the time as we didn't have any kids) and they came in our room only to sleep at night. They NEVER messed on the carpeting, but the quality of carpeting was so low that it absorbed the oils from their coats. I vacuumed 3 times a week as I hate dog hair, so it wasn't that we weren't taking care of it. We steam cleaned it - didn't work. Finally, we called Luna to see what they would do for us and were told that berber wasn't the right choice for dog owners and pretty much that we should have done our research before buying it. Seriously.

We ripped the carpeting up and installed hardwood floors ourselves - which we should have done originally. I will NEVER use them again.

We finished our basement not too long after that and used Home Dept. It was a very good experience and the carpeting was a much much much better quality than Luna. The only downfall is the process isn't very quick compared to Luna and Empire.

When we moved into our current home, we needed carpeting ASAP in two bedrooms. We got a quote from Home Depot and then called Empire as we needed it installed sooner than 2 weeks (Home Depots time frame at the time). Empire was VERY VERY expensive at first. Like double Home Depot. But, we had the HD quote and they matched it...after the sales guy had to leave the room to call his manager to "see what he could do". Lol. It was installed the next day or so. Which was nice. The quality of carpeting we have from Empire, though, isn't as good as Home Depot's. As time has gone on (we've been here almost 2 years), it's really shown it's wear - even in the bedroom that is rarely ever used.

If you have the time to wait, I'd suggest Home Depot. We need new carpeting in our basement eventually and I'm sure we will go with them. If you need it in a hurry, call Empire - but be prepared to negotiate. They really want to make that sale at your house, so push them as low as you can go. (Get prices from Home Depot first). Regardless - stay away from Luna. IMHO.

We tried Luna and we were unhappy. The guy came over and took the measurements but refused to give me a clear estimate. It was very shady and we ended up using someone else.

I can't share an experience with Luna, but I will tell you if you can afford hardwood floors compared to Laminate, buy hardwood. We had laminate (quick step) in our last home, and it scratch, after the store told us it didn't. I know hardwood scratches too, but usually it is just the finish that scratches, not the actual wood. We recently sold that home that had laminate floors, and for resale, hardwood is better. Everyone commented that they would rather have hardwood. We knew we weren't staying in that house, that is why we went more affordable with laminate.

Luna is SHADY!!! We called them out when we moved into our house for an estimate. They would not give us a clear-cut price and didn't like to answer questions about price. Once they gave us an estimate, we asked how much that comes out to a square foot, and he wouldn't tell us. He just said we wouldn't get a better price anywhere else. They "claim" you are buying one room, getting one free, but in reality, they jack the price up so high in hopes you won't know the difference. I have heard nothing but bad things about Luna, and would stay away. They were about 3x more expensive than the carpet store we ended up going with.

Never used Luna Carpets but I have had both Laminate and Hardwood floors and from a last longer perspective, I like the Laminate Wood Floors (Especially if you have kids and dogs). The are pretty much scratch resistant and very easy to keep clean. Real wood on the other hand looks beautiful, but scratches in a minute with kids toys and dogs. There are alot of laminates out there that look beautiful too.

Have had great experience with laminate floors at my parents home... have used Empire Today and liked them. They have good deals and financing too... not sure how they compare with Luna - next day installation on carpeting, I know... not sure about their laminate. Good luck!

NEVER hire those two companies, they charge WAY too much!! If you're looking to have hardwood floors put in, email me and I'll give you a number of a guy that did hardwood floors for my good friend. I saw her floors and they are GORGEOUS!! When I'm ready to have my floors done, I'm getting this guy to do it.

I'll give you an example of why not to hire those big name companies to do home improvements.

Three years ago, I got estimates for having my siding done on the house. I called 4 different companies. One large big name company, two medium companies and one small independent guy.

The two medium companies quoted me $10,000 and the other $15,000 for just the siding and not including the soffit, facia and gutters.
The large big name company who happened to be "Sears Home Improvement" quoted me.... are you ready?! $27,000!!!!!! By this time, I have already met with the two medium sized guys. I asked the Sears rep why he's charging so much? He danced around the question, and in the end I never got my answer and I had to ask him to leave my house. The last guy, the independent guy quoted me $6500. I hired him, and he did an AWESOME job on my house. That price included the siding, soffit, facia, gutters, downspouts, and trimming around the windows and doorframes.

Not only did he do a great job, but got more business on my block because the neighbors saw what a great job he was doing.

My point is.... you don't need big time names to do an amazing job...call in the little guys to do it. They work for themselves and rely on referral business from their clients, so you know they take pride in their workmanship.

One last thing about laminate. If you are planning to stay in your house for a long time, I would NOT do laminate. I did it in my townhouse and hated it after a year. I was so glad to move. I will never do laminate again. Hardwood floors are the way to go.

Good luck to you.

we have laminte and love it. we have 2 walking age kids and a golden retirever and it holds up really well. i clean it with vinegar and water and it's great.

We used luna to carpet our entire house. They were great, and for a little extra (Cash to the installer) they took all our old stuff and our old trim.
I would not only use them again, but recomend them.
We also have laminate flooring in our bedroom - but my husband installed it. I love it, and it is less maintence and better waring than our hardwood.

THose big companies are a rip-off!!! My father in law has a quote from them that was insane! I have as number for a great guy that does both laminate and wood who is insured and extrememyl reasonable!! email me for his number!
Serena

I got several quotes for carpet and hardwood floor. The best experience I had was with Empire. Very professional and very competative in prices. They quoted me $75 a square foot and were able to give me the same selection for $45 a square foot. They saved me lots of money. Remember they are sale people so negotiate. 1-888-588-2300

If Luna gives you a good estimate then use them. Or if you are in The west suburban area. We use Terrace Carpet in Villa Park. They are a family business & very highly rated in our area. I purchase carpet from them. I purchased Ceramic tile & is beautiful in my kitchen. They are on St. Charles Road in villa park Il.

We had the same situation and we called Luna because we have used Empire and the quality is not great. When the salesman came to our house he measured the rooms and told us about their buy one room get the second 1/2 off (or free) I can't remember. But oh my God, the prices were ridiculous! They were 3 times the prices of other carpet dealers. I know you pay extra for them to come to you, but that's insane! We asked the guy if he was serious and he looked at us like we were crazy! We ended up buying the laminate from Lumber Liquidators (great place in Bolingbrook) and we installed it ourselves, it looks great! It was easier than we thought. The best piece of advice is make sure the room is level. The guys at LL will give you advice on how to do that, it's easy! If you don't have the interest in doing it yourself, we also use FCA of Naperville for carpet, tile, etc. (reasonable & really nice people to work with). Best of luck!!!

Hi Frances,
I would NEVER use Luna carpets again. I had a very bad experience with them when we moved into our house 6 years ago. We got new carpeting in 4 rooms (thought the deal buy 1 get 1 free was a good thing - ended up forking out big buck anyway - didn't seem to have saved much). Anyway we had our living/dining room carpeted and they ran out of carpeting and used another carpet from a different dye lot and where they matched it up there was a totally obvious seam in the carpet not too mention they were slightly different colors. Anyway long story short it took me over 6 MONTHS!!! to have them get someone out to fix it. They never returned any of my phone calls and it wasn't until I threatened them with going to the Better Business Beaurea that they finally did something about it. I would never never recommend them to anyone!!!
