My husband and I are hoping VERY much to get pregnant with our first baby in 2006. Before I can do this, I need to find a good Ob/Gyn who can work through some health concerns with me. Was hoping to find someone in Evanston. Any suggestions? The last ob/gyn I saw was rather cold and not really interested in talking with me about my concerns. Can you help? Thanks!
The best advice I ever got on this topic was to call the hospital where you hope to deliver, and ask to speak with the head Labor and Delivery nurse -- tell them you're new to the area, and wondering if they could pass along the names of some ob/gyns they like to work with. When I did this, I called Evanston Northwestern, where I ended up delivering my baby in September. I got referrals for Jeremy Miller, and also for Pamela Goodwin. I ended up in Goodwin's practice because of my insurance, but ended up using the midwives there, Jennifer Carney and Debi Lesnick. They were INCREDIBLE, and I had a tough delivery. I'd also recommend a doula. Good luck to you!

I am the mother of 7 ( yes that is seven), 4 of whom I delivered at Evanston Hospital. I am also a birth doula who pratices mainly with clients that deliver at Evanston and Prentice hospitals so I have a strong base of knowledge both personally and professionally regarding the medical caregivers, particularly at Evanston. I do not know the extent of your health concerns in terms of your desire or need for an OB or a Midwife for your care, but I usually recommend the same practice as another Mamasource Mom recommended, which is Dr. Pamela Goodwin's practice. I mostly recommend this practice because you can have the option of having your care with the OB's, Dr.'s Goodwin, Saleh and Kozinsky if you are looking for physician -based care, or you can utilize the Midwives ( my choice for care)in the practice, Debi Lesnik, Jenny Carney (and they just added a 3rd midwife Gayle). The midwifery model of approach typically means longer time given in your pre-natal appts. (they are generally less rushed then the doctors though these docs are pretty good ) and the addition of more support during labor (the OB's generally come in closer to the time you are ready to push whereas the Midwives tend to come in when you come to the hospital and attend to you while you are in labor (depending on your circumstance). Using a practice that has the option of midwives ( there are just 2 practices that work this way at Evanston + St. Francis hospitals, one practice at Prentice, one at Swedish Convenant and one at Illinois Masonic (all possibilitites in terms of location proximity to your livivng in Evanston) is what I suggest to almost all my doula clients as it opens up more possibilities for them in terms of their care. This may or may not help, but if you are considered generally healthy and "low risk", you may have better luck with a midwife than with an Ob/Gyn. Even if you're not, all midwives partner with OB/Gyn's who they can call in for backup and/or refer patients to who they are not qualified to take care of.
I really like the midwife philosophy of care much better than the docs. They spend more time with the patients, tend to be more available for questions, and are more concerned about the person's whole body rather than just what's involved in the pregnancy.
I'm pregnant with my first and have been seeing the group of midwives at Nortwestern Memorial Physicians Group - I think they have a clinic in Evenston too. I have been very happy with the level of care and attention that I've received - I went in and chatted with one of them before we started trying to conceive and have continued to go to the same group. My past experience with Ob/Gyn docs has been similar to yours - they don't seem very receptive to answering questions or giving you any advice other than their short medical opinion.

Debi Lesnick was the midwife for my best friend's birth. I was there as my friend's birth coach. Debi was wonderful. My girlfriend had her second last October and Debi was on hand again. That time she went natural and still had an amazing experience. I know, I am a mom of three. God Bless You
I would highly recommend my ob/gyn. Dr. N. Jill Hoprasart. The office phone number is 847-869-3300. They are located at 1000 Central Street (right across from Evanston Hospital). I had a troubled pregnancy and ended up needing to be induced and have a last minute c-section. She was wonderful and very calm throughout. In addition, my good friend just had her baby with her yesterday - and she also gave a glowing recommendation.
Besides all that, she has a wonderful nurse who is very knowledgeable named Marie.

I love my ob/gyn. His name is Dr. Saleh. He has 2 other ob's in the practice as well as 3 certified nurse midwives. I have used them for over 15 years and feel very comfortable with their model of care and support.
