laptops for kids

My son simply loves to sit on my lap and type letters and see them appear on the screen in Word. He likes it when I change the color and size of the letters too. I see there are a lot of child-like laptops out there. Do you know which one is the best for just typing words? Do you have one of these laptops that you think is a waste of money? I want to put a computer on my son's Christmas wish list and don't see a lot of high 'stars' on the reviews. Curious what you mamas thought.

BTW my son is only 2.5 but is very into his ABCs and 123s and sight words. Needless to say we want something durable. I saw the LeapFrog My Own Leaptop on sale for $20 and started my search from there. I didn't care for the LeapFrog so much b/c the letters are in ABC order. I prefer to teach my son where the letters are on the computer QWERTY since he already knows the ABC order. The letters look kind-of lame too. Others I'm looking into were the Vtech Toy Story Laptop and the Oregon Scientific OSI Pc Trainer 5.

My son started using the desktop on his own at 2.5 (yay www.starfall.com).

At 5ish he got his first hand-me-down laptop and started saving to buy his own macbook. He JUST finished saving for it this past weekend, and will be buying his own this week (we match). It took him 3 years to save for it, but it's the one he wanted.

But from age 2.5 to 5, he just shared the desktop with us.
