How does naming your son jr work?

Okay, I want to name my son jr. But I'm not too big on my husbands 1st name, his middle name is okay but very common. So how does naming your son jr work, can I name him jr without using my husbands name or would that just be odd. Like would people thinking its not his because he's got a different name lol! Or can I name him jr even if I just use his middle name or 1st and a different name?
My husbands name is Todd Michael Ross

You cannot name your son Jr or II unless the name is identical. Trust me I wasn’t so keen on Frank but I sucked it up. My older son is a fifth.

To be a jr. it must be the same exact name ie your son would also need to be named Todd Michael. My son has the same name as my husband, but we didn’t add jr on the end because we didn’t want people calling him that (Jr.)

My son is a junior!! I named him after my husband, and his middle name is my Daddy’s. As far as I know, to be a “jr.,” you have to have the same first name. Can you maybe name your son with the same first name as your husband so you can have a junior, but then have him go by his middle name? (The middle names don’t have to be the same to be a junior.)

My grandparents did that. Most people never even knew my uncle’s real first name because he always went by his middle name. I never knew why they called him by his middle name but I think it was to cut down on the confusion. That way, when someone yelled “Frank!” they knew it was the father, not the son. lol!!

Good luck!!

You have to use the same name.

My husband is a ‘II’, “first middle last II”

His name is exactly the same as his dads name.
My best friends brother is a Jr. and he has the exact same name as his dad.

I have never heard of someone being Jr. or II and not having the exact same name.

My ex-husband was ‘first middle hyphenated-last III’ and his was the same as his dad and granddad.

a “junior” is named (exact name) after their father. The father, then, becomes the “senior”, or Sr.

a II or III is where it is a family name… named, for example, after an uncle, or grandfather, or great- something… and again, it is first, middle, last, II (and yes… the name should be exact… otherwise it isn’t a junior or a II).

The name has to be identical or he is not a junior

I suppose you can name your child Junior as a first name, but he wont be a junior per say. A traditional junior would be Todd Michael Ross Jr. And then what usually happens, since both are Todd, is the the younger gets a nick name. Sometimes that nick name can be junior, but usually it is something else all together. My uncle, who is Frank Jr, we called Skeeter.

“Jr” MEANS he has the same name as his father. Period. That’s what it means. The purpose of the Jr. is to distinguish father from son on written documents etc. (other options include II “the second”)

If you don’t want him to be named after his dad, you don’t want him to be a “Jr.” which is fine… it just is.

If you want to CALL him Junior. Go for it. You could even NAME him Junior… like as his name, but you don’t just choose a name and stick Junior on the end unless you’ve named him AFTER his dad (who would then be Todd Ross Sr.).

Ok - so a couple things…
this is mostly with #3, but I have known 2 sets of families who named their 3rd son Trey (the 1st spelled Trey and the 2nd Tres, with the accent)… which means 3rd.
Also, Bill Gates III went by Trey as a kid.

Dewi is the Welsh form of David… but is also pronounced like Due (or 2nd). Some families have used that as an option.

I also googled and I guess it’s not UN-common to just name your son Junior. As in, his ACTUAL name is Junior.

You can do whatever you want… but if you don’t do it right, you will hear about it for the rest of your life. So, as mama’s said below… Your son would have to be Todd Michael Ross, Jr.

Now… plenty of people get this wrong. which is why many refer to George Bush, Jr and George Bush, Sr. TECHNICALLY that is incorrect.
George Herbert Walker Bush
George Walker Bush
Even though the names have 2 out of 3, it’s still technically incorrect to refer to Baby Bush as the Jr of Daddy Bush.

I see that you aren’t fond of your husband’s name and as Thea S. said, the Jr. suffix is to note that the father and son have the same name, first middle and last. Do you want to call your son JR as in the letters? Or do you want to call him Junior, as in the actual word? If you want to just call him JR you can give him a “J” first name and an “R” middle name. If you want to actually call him Junior, then make that his first name.

As others have said, if you want to be a “…, Jr” than you need the names to be identical. My brother and father have the same first and last names, but different middle names so my brother is NOT a jr.

My friend’s husband has a family tradition of all 1st boys being named William SameLastName, but different middle names and that is how they are all referred to (so he is called Jason and his son is called Clayton, but they are both William for the official first name and nobody is a Jr).

So you’ll need to decide if you are interested in the lineage of a Jr, calling him the actual name of Junior or simply giving him a new name/nickname.

Gypsy:

In order to name your son a “Junior”, he has to exact…Todd Michael Ross, Jr.
If your son has a son and names him after him, his son would then be III

Todd Michael Ross - husband/father
Todd Michael Ross, Jr. - your son
Todd Michael Ross, III - your potential grandson.

If you want to name him after your husband - you can call him whatever you want - Todd, Michael, Mike, Jr. - heck you can even call him John!

But his legal name would be what’s on his birth certificate.

Good Luck!

If you name him Jr, his name needs to be identical to his dad’s. That’s what Junior means.

I gave my son my husband’s first name but a different middle name. Since my husband goes by his middle name, my son goes by their first name. You could do something similar and leave off the jr. Works out well.

My son has the same exact name as his father, so he is a junior. I think it has to be the same name.

You could call your son TJ (Todd Junior) instead of Todd.

I like his name! And TJ Ross sounds cool too!

If you really want to have your brain scrambled, google " Jr. Or II" and you’ll get a WORLD of different guidelines!

Then for your child to be titled Jr his name would have to be Todd Micheal Ross Jr.

Another option is Todd Micheal Ross II.

Otherwise you can name him Junior like Junior Sample.

The whole point of the Jr. is that it’s exactly the same as dad’s name. If you don’t like your husband’s name, and just want to call your son Junior, just name him Junior.
