I have always been an avid runner, kick-boxer, gym rat...but my doctor has now told me none of that is good, because I have a tear in my hip labral (cartilidge in hip joint) I was in a serious accident 14 years ago & was i wouldn't walk let alone run, so of course I had to go running as soon as I could : ) well 14 years of pounding on the joint has taken it's toll. does anyone have any great suggestions for some gentle cardio? doctor suggested biking, which is also painful, and swimming but that isn't always convient. I don't want to deal with arthritis or possible hip replacement in the future so I want to be good to my leg, but i also want to get in some exercise so i don't feel yucky! thanks!
Sorry to hear of your hip problems. Man it's awful when the things that are so good for you back fire. If you have trouble biking then things like elliptical machines and walking probably won't be good for you either. My mother has severe rheumatoid arthritis and she swims as often as possible. It has to be the best for joints. You may want to try water aerobics as well. Good luck.
PS: Have you tried Glucosamine to lubricat your joints? It helped me. It might allow you to ride a bike without pain.
I, too, am an avid runner and kick boxer, so I TOTALLY understand the "cardio addiction". When I injured my self training for a marathon a few years ago, I joined a friend (begrudgingly) for a "hot yoga" class. To my surprise, I LOVED the work out. The heat causes you to work up a sweat, and the movements can actually be very challenging. Best of all, it was easy on my ailing knee, shaped my body in places that running couldn't and made me feel really great inside and out. Give it a try
