I need some recommendations for a good can opener. I don't care what kind...I just want one that works!!! I have a Pampered Chef one that everyone talks about all the time, but it does not open cans easily. I have to go around the can at least twice and it falls off repeatedly in the process and I still have to pry the lid off. I have even returned it and tried a new one, but I'm still not happy. I need a brand that works the first time! I don't want to buy one to find out it doesn't work. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!
My OXO one is GREAT. It is easy to use, leaves no sharp edges and works the first time. I gave one to my mom 2 yrs ago for Xmas and she is very happy with it also.
edit:
My mom and I have this one: http://www.oxo.com/OA_HTML/xxoxo_ibeCCtpOXOPrdDtl.jsp?section=10053&item=48106&minisite=10024&respid=53057
I have an OXO can opener too. I like it because the handle to turn it is nice and strong. I've had it for at least 7 years now and have had no problems opening up anything.
Added: I have this one because I know there are different OXO styles. Mine is the pretty basic one.
I have an OXO one too. And I sent my husband out to find me one that works! It locks on and works everytime. I've had it now for 5 years. My husband picked it up at Target, I believe.
I love my Black and Decker under-cabinet mounted one. It's ready at a touch and works great.
I have a basic Swing-A-Way can opener, like this:

I grew up with one, and when I moved out of the house, bought my own. It's been about 15 years now and still works great. Just a note, though, last year I went to buy a second and ended up with a defective one, but exchanged it and the replacement works fine. I bought it at Target.
Tupperware makes a great can opener that you might want to check out. www.my.tupperware.com/KJThomas
I've had an Oxo one for like 10 years and works great everytime. I have a Pampered Chef one, too (used to be a consultant) that works right everytime. It works different than normal can openers so that is why some people struggle with it. Have you gotten a consultant to show you how to use it? Due to the way it works, the lid doesn't pop up like when using other openers. You need to use the little pincher "lid grabber" part of the opener to lift the lid off. Also, some can manufacturers have changed the top of their cans so often it's easiest to use it on the bottom of the can now.
I have an Oxo can opener (manual) and I love it! You can typically find these at Bed, Bath & Beyond or other retailers of the sort (Target, etc.). I haven't had any problems with any Oxo products. Oxo can be little pricey, but not as much as Pampered Chef. Good luck!
I LOVE my pampered chef can opener. So much I bought a second one in case we lose this one. I love that there are no sharp edges to deal with. I second have you worked with a consultant to make sure you are using it correctly? I use the pincher thingy to grab the lids, no problems there. As I said, love that there aren't sharp edges to deal with, so using the pincher thing is an easy extra step to take.
Good luck!
