Electric Scooter for Xmas - Your Thoughts?

Christmas is around the corner. My 18-year-old is asking for an electric scooter for Christmas…you know the kind. The ones everyone uses to zip around town, some of which people rent on the street (not a motorcycle-type of scooter).

I mentioned it to my mom and sister to see if they wanted to split the cost. My sister wasn’t very convinced by it. My mother is having a panic attack saying she watched a program in which scooter users ended up paralyzed, with broken spinal cords, or cracked skulls. She thinks I am being irresponsible to even consider gifting her one.

My daughter was planning to use it only on the sidewalk to zip in-between college classes, grab a coffee, or on the rare occasion the public transportation to my office is down, to get to my office in the evening so we can go home together instead of her walking here (about 1 mile from college campus). She said she’d use a helmet. She constantly comments on people riding these on the street and even lane skipping between cars and how reckless it is, so I doubt she’d do that herself.

Do you think it’s a bad idea and as unsafe as my mom thinks? I see kids on campus using them, kids younger than her use them as well, I have even seen families with mom, dad and young kids crossing intersections together. If you have a kid who has a scooter, I’d love to hear your experiences as well (good and bad). If you have any scooter recommendations, feel free to share as well, in case I do decide to buy one.

This feels like something you can’t avoid, either you get it for them, or they will use someone else’s…

These things scare me to be honest - I’m pretty risk averse as it is. I guess the only thing to do is really instill the old ‘wear your helmet’ (even after you had a beer  and no it’s not nerdy) type mantra.

Thinking about this…maybe an electric bike would be a good substitute? Those seem to be picking up steam…
