Does anyone know how to get the smell of cat urine out of carpet?

Hi All:

So we have this ferrel/wild cat that lives on our property. He/she lived here before we moved in and has been no trouble up until now. He/she got in the house yesterday and piddled in the corner of my living room floor on our brand new carpet. It smells horrible. I think she might have sprayed, but I am not really sure what the even means? My mom mentioned it? I am afraid that if I put the wrong cleaner on it I will only make it worse. I really don't want to pay a professional service to come out for one small spot? Know any home remedies or tricks that might help? Thanks.

Go to the pet store. They sell products specifically for this (to deal with the smell for you and also that other cats don't smell it and spray there as well). It will be some kind so carpet cleaner spray. You'll probably have to put it on, scrub, vacuum and repeat.

In the mean time, cleaning with a little warm sudsy water won't make it worse and might make it more livable for you. (something like dawn that won't hur the carpet).

I'd try Folex to make sure the urine stain is well treated and then use some Febreze afterward to help with the smell. We bought our Folex at Lowe's, but I think it's sold at pet stores, too. The Febreze you can probably get anywhere. You could also (or instead of) rent a small (or large) steam cleaner for a quick spot treatment if you'd prefer. I think supermarkets still rent them out. Oh! You could also try tea tree oil, instead of Febreze, for the odor and a little extra cleaning -it also has some antiseptic properties, I think (spot check it on the carpet first, though). We've had a few pet accidents over the years (pee, diarrhea, vomit --all so lovely) and that's what worked for us. Good luck!

Large pet stores like Petsmart and Petco have an entire aisle of cat urine odor remover, but some of them DO NOT WORK. I've tried most of them myself when we've had a problem cat - Natures Miracle works very well, and another called Kids and Pets does the trick too. Now remember, right after you spray the spot with the cleaner, the odor will be worse before it gets better as, when the urine on the carpet becomes wet again it tends to make the smell much more noticeable. Once the spot is clean and dry, the odor will dissapate.

Wal-mart carries a product called Urine gone. It was originally sold on TV to it is in their "as seen on TV" section. It is an enzyme that eats the urine and gets rid of it completely. I used it after my dog had her puppies and they were pooping and peeing all over in the last few weeks before they got new homes. It even works for human accidents in beds. It is only about $10.

Hi and Good morning, Is it just in one spot? Where is Forest Hill? I have something that I have used for dog urine and I find it works well with the smell. Also, ecofriendly so you can use it around your wonderful girls.

Please don't use Fabreeze on anything as it is considered one of the most toxic products in the home. Remember we sleep in the products we use and breathe them even if it is just on the carpet.

It is raining here "cats and dogs" - hope no leaks in the house.

If its only one spot, I would make a mixture of white vinegar and water, half and half, put it in a spray bottle and saturate the surrounding area. If the cat sprayed, it means urine went up down and all around. Vinegar is a wonderful cure for aromas. I leave a bowl of vinegar in the room where my cat box is (in a spot where she cant get to it or knock it over) and that keeps the room fresh, it absorbs odors. Anyway, spray the area and just let it dry, this usually works. You may be being ultra sensitive since you KNOW it happened and you are "looking" and "anticipating" the aroma each time you enter your living room.

Yes! There is an amazing product that is made of enzymes. I found it at PetSmart, Nature's Miracle, it comes in quart size containers - about $20 bucks, but worth it. All I had to do was spray this liquid on the area where the 'spray' was and poof! the smell was immediately neutralized. If you have a 'black' light, you will be able to determine where the cat actually sprayed. The people at PetSmart will be able to direct you to the product. It is amazing! What a relief it was~

Try Simple Solution cat spray and urine odor remover. You can find it at any pet store...You pour it on the spot and as it dries it breaks down the enzymes in the urine to eliminate it. It may take up to two weeks for the smell to be completely gone, but be patient, because it does work. Also, to pinpoint the exact spot, use a black light...Good luck! I know how frustrating this can be!!

I would definitely use Nature's Miracle spray. When we first got our cat, my daughter had locked the him in her room. The poor thing couldn't get out to use the litter box and had an accident in her room. I sprayed that stuff in there and the smell was gone. No one could tell anything ever happened in there. It's definitely worth picking up a bottle.

Pay a professional and be very thorough in your research to ensure that they know exactly how to work with cat urine! Otherwise, you will live with this forever, or until you rip of the carpet and replace it...again.

Nature's Miracle, for Cats, sold at pet stores in a white bottle with red lettering. It seems to be the best at removing urine without staining the carpet or leaving a residue. Good Luck!

Hi,

We had a similar problem a few years ago. My cat started to spray in the house after I had my daughter. One thing with cat urine is that the longer you wait, the harder it will be to get out. Enzyme cleaners work well and so does vinegar and water. However, it may be worth it to call in the professional. If it got into the pad, putting a cleaner on the carpet may not get rid of the smell. You may need to replace that section of pad. Since the carpet is new, you may it is probably worth the money not to have deal with the smell. Sorry that happened to you!

Try Natures Miracle. I really believe its the best thing out there.

Hi Sherry,

You can buy one of two products at the pet store, Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle. They both work!

Hi Sherry,

I think the best remedy for getting animal urine out of things is a product called Nature's Miracle. You can get it at any pet store and maybe even Target, etc. It's basically just natural enzymes that neutralize the smell and color of urine. It's also totally safe on your carpets and any cloth items. I have a huge jug of it that gets used often (unfortunately).

Don't be afraid to really saturate the spot--you need to get everything out. You can also do it twice if you need to.

Good luck!

Laurie

I have used oxy clean in the past on stubborn pet stains. I use the powder and make a mix following the instructions on the back of the tub. Then you let it sit and soak up the urine. Good luck!

Nature's Miracle is great for this and is available at pet stores like Pet Club and Petco. Good luck!

Our cat ruined two rooms of carpet. We had a professional service come treat the carpet first which actually set the odor in the carpet. We then tried Scoe10x which seems to have removed most of the odor. I think it would have completely removed the odor if we tried it first.

I would call their customer service line and talk to someone about your particular situation before ordering. It's a little pricey, but might be worth it. Good luck!

Here's their website:

At a pet goods store, look for "Nature's Miracle" I usually get the regular product, but I think they make one specific for cat urine.
