I am interested in building an in-law suite, detached from my house, approximately 15 by 15 in size, including a small bathroom. I am in the DFW area and am wondering if you have recommendations on contractors who would be interested in giving us a quote. If you've also done this and have a rough estimate of cost, that is appreciated as well. Thanks.
Depending on your neighborhood you may or may not be able to do this. You may need to file for permits.
We have an in law apt in our detached garage - it was already an apt when we bought the property - but we gutted it, doubled the size and completely redid it. It is a full 1,000 sf apt with 2 bedrooms, bath, and kitchen, dining and living area. Because it was technically just a "remodel" we did not move any exterior walls - it was not a renovation - we did not need to file new building permits with the city.
As far as cost - it was around $25,000 to complete this - this did not account for some of the demolition that we did ourselves - or the electrical - again that we did ourselves.
