I am wondering if anyone has a good cure for diaper rash. I am trying to allow my baby's bottom to get air, applying Balmex, and changing him frequently. I am seeing a little improvement. His bottom is very red and was bleeding a little due to it being so raw.
He is in a lot of pain...poor little guy! Thanks for you ideas in advance! :)
Hi Hillary,
When my 3 were in diapers and had diaper rash, I used plain corn starch. I would put it on them every night and by morning they looked better and there was no more pain from the rash.
I would ask your pediatrician to take a look at it just to make sure that it is not a yeast infection but it sounds like it is like my kids got when they were little.
I hope this helps!
Hey Hillary,
I highly recommend just putting her bottom in the bath, with no soap, just water and placing cornstarch on it. This has helped my children over the years. Hope his little bottom feels better soon.
Your doctor can give him a prescription for diaper rash that will start to clear it up within a few hours. Our ped called it Greers Gooh (but have been told each doc has their own mixture they use). It is also possible that it is a yeast infection and not diaper rash and they can prescribe nystatin for that to clear it up. Google yeast infection in infants and take a look b/c that is what our daughter had for a long time and I thought it was just a regular diaper rash but nothing got rid of it and a neighbor happened to tell me that it was a yeast infection.
We had that same problem with our son for awhile....best thing we found was either Bordeaux Butt Paste or something even better but costs a bit more is a cream that is in a tub that costs like $21...cant find the tub of it right now but ya can get it from any store...its a large white tub of paste like cream....great stuff!!
Lydia mom of 3....Tabitha 9, Olivia 7, and Jack 2
When my daughter had a bad rash we:
1) gave her nekkid butt time
2) used cloth wipes or paper towels instead of commerical wipes
3) changed diapers (brand and size)
4) changed ointment (to A&D with aloe)
5) took her to the dr after no improvement for prescription butt paste (like others said, it could be yeast)
6) soaked her in Aveno Oatmeal bath for babies (this really seemed to offer her relief)
Hope that helps.
My pediatrician just recommended something to me called Gentian Violet. You have to get it from the pharmacy, but it's non-prescription. It will stain his bottom a purple color for a few days, but clears up the rash! GL!
Both my boys had horrible diaper rash. The best thing was walking around without pants/diapers on. They wore long shirts. And I also used Butt Paste. It worked 100% better than the other creams. Also, I switched their soap to Gentle Naturals. It made a world of difference!!
Both my boys had horrible diaper rashes. We all just have very sensitive skin. But in my youngest, this manifested as a combination yeast/strep infection, with the same symptoms you mentioned, right down to the bleeding. My ped. told me that when babies get strep, they don't get it in their throats like older kids and adults do, they get it as a diaper rash. The only thing that finally cleared it up for my son was a combination anti-fungal/anti-bacterial cream called Greer's Goo. Take him to your doctor if none of the old usual tricks work (like air drying, creams, change of diaper or wipe brand, change of diet, religious powdering and topical application of breastmilk - which can heal almost any type of diaper rash just about overnight except yeast or bacterial which will get worse because of the sugars in breastmilk). Ask your doctor to do a yeast-test and a strep-test at the same time. This will save you time in diagnosis. If you need the Greer's Goo though, I hope you have insurance. The little pot of it we got from the pharmacy was $316.00!!! Thank God for Tricare, we paid $3.
when my daughter had really bad diaper rash we used triple paste found with all of the other creams and only used water to clean her. The wipes would hurt her too much. But the triple paste (a small white container) was what helped the most.

My daughter's pediatrician recommended an old time solution people used to use, its called Domboro (sp?) I got it in Walgreens, they can help you find it. I mixed the solution then wet a peice of gauze put it on her vagina and cheeks for abt 2-3 minutes while doing a diaper change. You can also mix it in a tupperware container big enough for him and soak his rear end in it. Her rash was gone with in 10hrs. I had tried balmex, desitin, bordeaux's butt paste etc you name it, I tried it. This stuff was amazing!!!!! I would definitely reccomend it to anyone who's child has a diaper rash. Let me know how it goes~email me at [email protected]. I'll talk to you soon, best of luck!!!
Try Bagbalm. It comes in a green can and you can find it lots of places now. (Used to only be available in feed stores) This stuff was developed for cows udders but is the best for diaper rash, cuts, you name it.
We had a lot of luck adding baking soda to my daughter's bath - changes the ph of the skin so it doesn't get so irritated.
Hillary,
I had the same problem all 3 kids, at one time or another I tried all of those things. With my first 2 the only thing that helped was using cloth diapers, water, air and A & D and TIME. When my daughter got diaper rash I was using Melaleuca's products and their Renew lotion got rid of it in a day!
Try the pain relief neosporin. It works great at a barrier, helps heal the skin, and soothes their little bottom. I used this on my son when he was an infant and it helped tremendously, especially on the broken skin areas. For more of an everyday cream we use the bag balm like someone else here recommended. That stuff is wonderful, I couldn't get through the winter without it.
It took us awhile to figure out the my son's PH balance in combination with chemicals in the diaper were causing his problems. He is very sensitive to Luvs diapers and because of his PH it just burns his skin off. Try a different brand of diaper. We also liked Badger Baby Balm. It does not have zinc oxide which can cause major irritation. Compared to Destin, Balmex has much less of zinc oxide. We also coated the cream with 100% cornstarch baby powder. It helped keep the moisture away from his skin. If there are bumps and bubbles take him to the ped. it may be a yeast infection, which will need anti-fungal cream.
My second was this way. I had to use cloth diapers. Within a few days of using them, the rash cleared up. I know it sounds like an inconvenience, but it does save money on disposables. I would use the disposables if we went out, but for the most part, I used cloth on her.
We use Aquaphor by Eucerin. It's done wonders for my children, who usually have very dry skin so that doesn't help the diaper rash. Everytime I use it, I've seen improvement by the next diaper change, and it gets rid of blood-red diaper rash by the next morning when I put it on the night before. I swear by it, and gladly recommend it to everyone! It did wonders for my son, and is doing the same for my daughter (even with teething), and my sister-in-law just started using it on her son's cheeks b/c they get chapped so easily and the eczema lotion wasn't clearing it up. (We've also done that in the winter, and even at the beach after a windy day.)
A&D works the best to heal diaper rash. you have to spread it on very very thick like cake frosting. however, boudreaux's butt paste works the best to PREVENT diaper rash. also don't use wipes when he has a rash. wash his bum with soap, water and your hand. it is less irritating and helps the rash heal faster.
my son is about to turn 1. i've used boudreaux's for the last year and he's only had diaper rash once.
if it gets bad don't be afraid to call the dr. it may not be diaper rash at all.
good luck.
Have you ever tried Butt Paste? I always liked it better than Balmex. Also you might want to have it looked at to make sure it's not a yeast infection. Has your baby recenlty been on any antibiotics? My son used to get a yeast problem everytime he was on medicine.
