Are Perms bad for you?

Good Morning Beautiful Mommies, it's finally Friday. Whoooooooo! Sorry I like Fridays. Anyways I am thinking about getting a perm done on my hair tomorrow. I have the appointment set already, but I wanted to ask for your advise. Is anyone out there familiar with perms? Are they bad for you and your health? You see the other day I was searching on Google whether I could dye and perm my hair at the same time. And many posts out there said not to do it because it could damage my hair really bad. So I am just going to go with the perm for now and wait a few months to dye. But I did come across a post that said that perms can actually kill brain cells because of how strong the chemicals are. Does anyone know if this is true? I had a total of two perms in my 27 years of life. My first one was when I was like 15 and that one did not stay because my hair was sooooo straight. Well by the time I was a junior in high school I got another one. And I loved how my hair looked like that, hubby did too. He saw some pictures back at home and he loved how I looked with it. So now I want to get another one, but I am kind of scared. You know Im just debating whether to get it or not to get it. What do you think? Should I go for it? I want a new look. Please advise. Thanks

I grew up w/ a salon in the basement of my home. My mom used to have customers who would get perms every 3-4 months. One is currently 94, several others are in their mid-to-late 80s. I, myself had constant perms for several years while growing up. Perms, like all chemical alterations, are fine when done properly. It all depends on the strength of the acid, how the perms are wrapped, length of time on the hair, as well as your own body chemistry &/or any medications you're currently taking. If you're healthy and your hair is as well--not dry/breaking off--go for it!

My mom would take me to get perms all time when I was a kid. She took me so often that my hair is now permanently curly (well wavy and if I put product in it, it does a perfect surfer tousled curl. All I do is wash towel dry, product, shake hair and go. It's nice now that I have a baby) I think i'm decently intelligent. . not to many brain cells dead I think. Not really sure if it's the perms or my hair just naturally changed, but who know?

I have no expert opinion by any means, but people have been getting perms for a LONG time and they continue to be done. If there was something really wrong with it, they would be not allowed.

Sure, perms are chemicals right? But there are chemicals in everything we do now-adays. So what's the big deal? Does it smell when you get a perm - is it the inhalation that apparently kills brain cells or is it the absorption of the chemical into your hair follicles? If the former, then wear a mask if you're really concerned.

I dunno. I say get the perm. Enjoy your new look (get some lingeree for your husband to go with your new look). :)

Perms are just fine.
Its about the same as dying or bleaching etc.
The only thing I would say is that, like with any hair process, if you do it TOO much you can damage your hair.
Thankfully there are conditioning treatments that can help, and hey it's hair...It grows back! :)

p.s.I come from a family of hair stylists :)

GO FOR IT!

My grandmother got perms on a regular basis and when she died at almost 90 it had nothing to do with her perming her hair. Perms do damage your hair, so make sure they don't leave it on for too long. Colors a not good for your hair either. You may want to test a small spot to see if your scalp is sensitive to dyes. I have a friend that colors her hair but she can't use dyes so instead she bleeches it blond. That worked for her. I hope this advise helps you.

I've been doing hair for 20 years. Perms do not damage brain cells. Some people can have allergic reactions and if you are concerned the stylist can do a 24 hour patch test. Reactions can also occur if the perm drips on your skin or if the stylist forgets to change the cotton after applying the solution. In either case benedryl helps. I do have clients that I perm and color in one day. Here's the catch. You're stylist has to have knowledge of your hair and the products they are using! I use all Tigi color and Joico perms. I also use a special PH balancing treatment between the 2 services and after. If the hair color is darker the color is done after the perm. If the haircolor is lighter we color first and perm after. The damage comes when your hair is not strong enough to handle the process or if your stylist is not familiar with the process or products.

I've had a ton of perms, about one a year for the last 10 years, and i've never heard anything about it killing brain cells or having it affect me at all.

There are ways to change your look just by changing the style. If you feel you want to color and perm, you're right in saying that you can't do them together. Just wait a few weeks, then do the other. You don't have to wait a few months. As for either process killing brain cells, I don't know who told you that, but fortunately its not true. However, if a woman is in her first trimester it is not recommended. Good luck and hope all works out for your new look.

I have had perms all my life and I regularly beat people at Trivial Pursuit. My brain cells are fine. If that is how you want your hair, then do it. Make sure to purchase a shampoo and conditioner for permed hair (a salon formula.) Keep it trimmed. Good luck. cb
