My DD grandfather bought our 5.75mo old a walker! I'm very appreciative, but I heard from a nurse that walker are not good for a kids development. She said that they are giving a kid who is cognitively not ready for mobility, mobility. She said that kids who use walkers actually learn to walk on their own later becasue they get "lazy"! She even said that walkers are illegal/not sold in other countries becasue of the finding in studys about walkers. She said that exersaucers are ok, though becasue they get to have upright fun, but can't be mobile. Any thoughts? Should we keep the walker Grandpa gave us or should we exchange it for an exersaucer?
I've heard similar things, as well as that, even though they are safer these days, walkers still aren't safe. I may be wrong. We've never had either, just since it doesn't make sense to me if a walker isn't good for development, an exersaucer would be. But, that's just my opinion.
Get the exersaucer. Walkers are dangerous more then anything. They can fall down stairs, get into things they aren't suppose to. I am not sure I buy into they are bad for their legs, I had one and was fine, my brother too. I think it is more the safety issue of them being mobile and stairs/getting into things. Exersaucers are awesome, keeps them upright, they can bounce and stay put and you can move them to the room you are in. My daughter lived in one nightly so I could get dinner made! :) I have never heard about them being bad for their leg development, ask your Pediatrician, but I say if you have stairs it is best to exchange it.
