Anyone know how to get rid of scavies/mites on a person (namely me!)

Got into some mites apparently in my backyard a couple of weekends ago. Ahh.. the joy of our first house- on a wooded lot!

I went to the doc last Tues b/c I wasn't quite sure what these awfully itchy little bumps were. I grew up going to my great-aunt & uncle's farm almost every summer, so I've seen poison ivy, chiggers, ticks, you name it! The doc said it's definitely mites/scavies and gave me this horribly expensive, dangerous pesticide lotion to put on them to help kill the little boogers and heal the wounds. Normally I am more apt to follow home remedies or more organic treatments, but at the time I was just ready to get rid of the things that I followed her advice.

While it seemed to get rid of the itching for a little while and the initial bumps have subsided, yesterday they started coming back again- and spreading! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! These things are driving me crazy and although I haven't noticed them on my son or hubby yet, webmd shows that they can take 4-6 weeks to show symptoms!

What I've tried so far (before going to the doc):
Benedryl (both cream & oral)
Melaleuca Oil- I figured it soothed a fire ant attack, it could cure this- wrong!
Calamine
Caladryl
Peroxide (this is what we used to help with ticks on the farm)

No luck so far with any of these!

Campo-phenique comes to my mind. It is a disinfectant, it cleans and helps heal the wound. Hydrocortisone stops the itching. Bathing in some Aveeno product and trying some of there other products maybe could help.

scabies are VERY contagious. you need to use the cream that your physician prescribed and watch for outbreaks on your family members. honestly, stop messing around with this. you could spread this to anyone you come in contact with.

Try Tea Tree Oil. It smells bad, but works. It will get rid of the itching and the mites.

I would go back to the Dr. again. Many times it takes two rounds of the medication to totally rid the mites from under the skin. They can spread to your famiy but doubtful if you are careful and get on top of it again. If you did not go to a Dermatologist the first time I would do so this time for sure. This same thing happened to my husband after needing to walk/show a property....he was miserable until the second round of medication. None of the rest of us got it.
Hope you are feeling itch free very soon!

I had them once upon a time and something I am not sure if you have done is you need to wash all of your clothing... they stick to clothes too and multiply. I had to clean everything i owned but I got rid of them

My husband brought scavies home from a trip he took to Brazil, and the hardest part was getting rid of it. It was three months of medications, and about 15 loads of laundry in VERY HOT water. If you doctor doesn't know if it is scabies or mites then you may have to go to a dermatologist. That is the person that gave us the treatment that really worked. It was a nasty cream that you put on before bed, and then wash off in the morning. Then you wait and do it again two or three weeks later, and all the while washing your sheets in very very hot water to make sure that the little bugs are dead. The reason for the second dose weeks later is that it will kill the mites that are alive, but the won't kill the egges so you have to kill those ones off too. I hope for your sake that it isn't scabies because I treated myself, my husband and the two kids at the same time, and the boys were 4 and 18 months. Good luck. I couldn't find a natural way to get rid of them either or I wouldn't have put that strong cream on my small children, but if I hadn't it would still be in our house.

I got scavies when I was younger. As I can recall, I had to apply a lotion everyday. What I really remember is that my mom would not allow me to sit on the furniture because it could get in the fabric and spread to others and never go away. Also, my linens and clothing had to be washed immediately as they came off my body everyday to prevent spreading and/or coming back.

Try using Octagon soap. It's all-purpose soap, made by Colgate-Palmolive, and if I remember correctly contains maybe 4 ingredients (you can always call the company). When I got a bad case of chiggers, I tried everything; Tide baths, nail polish, expensive creams - but nothing worked. Octagon soap took away the itch, killed the little suckers and I've used it ever since after working in the yard or camping.
Good luck.

My son had scavies when he was 1 year old and his pediatrician prescribed an ointment that EVERYONE in the house had to put on for about a week. Your doctor should have prescribed you something, unfortunately everyone else may have to use the same ointment to not get it. The good news is his scavies has never returned and he is 9 years old now. If your doctor does not do something, check with your pediatrician. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about this particular problem, but I do know that you need to "smother" and get them to "dehydrate." So, you might try Ban roll on deodorant - not spray. It must be deodorant - not anti-perspirant. I would just roll this deodorant all over the itchy areas.

Lotions help them to move around and stay put. You want these mites to dry out and fall off.

I would then look into products called "Master's Miracle" on the internet or "Miracle II" which are excellent soaps, lotions and gels for healing just about everything in and around your house, yard, children, husband, self and pets.

I hope this helps...Good Luck!

pharmaceutical grade Neem oil. I got mine at Whole Foods. I garden and occasionally have the same problem. It stops the itching quickly and kills them off within a few days. Has worked twice so far for me.

Don't get discouraged I think you have to retreat after 2 or three weeks. Also wash everything in hot water. For things that you can't wash. like your bed or couch you need to buy a spray. Maybe you can use the same spray that you use for lice. I would also treat everyone in the house. If your doctor didn't give you enough for 2 treatments and for everyone I would get it refilled. The reason why you have to do it again in a few weeks is because of eggs that hatched afterwards, which probally was in bedding or funiture.
So sorry for you, good luck.

my various family has had this before, and it takes a rx med called quail oil. it is however spelled different when rx is written, but that is how to say it. it is a lotion to rub on skin, it suffocates the mites. it is the only thing that will clear it up. good luck, charlotte
