almost four year old with selective mutism

i am very concern and need help!! anyone out there have a child or knows a child with selective mutism. do they see a therpasist or psychogolist? if so who?? looking for referrals.

my son was diagnosed last year with autism. and now think he has selective mutism. has been in a special ed preschool for 4months(never said a word) this month they put him in head start preschool.(still not talking and has had 2 potty accidents(which he never has))

Hi Christy,

I am a speech therapist and I have only worked with 2 teenagers who had selective mutism. One website I found to be helpful was www.selectivemutism.org.

I also found that their selective mutism resulted from anxiety. Once the anxiety was addressed they starting talking more. Being that I haven't met your child I don't want to say that is the cause of his for sure but it may be some where to start.
