Rear Facing Car Seat

I just have a doubt after reading a news article about new suggestions for kids in car seats. I know they say to have your child rear-facing until at least 1 year old and 2 if possible. My son has been facing forward for quite a while, though. He's 10 months old and at his last doc. visit at the beginning of February he was 2.5 feet long. If I were to put him rear-facing his feet would be sitting on the head rest. How are you supposed to keep them rear-facing when they're so long?
