First Big Kid Bed

Hi, We are about to transition our almost 3 year old to a big boy bed. I called a couple mattress stores and felt like I was buying a used car! I am wondering if you need to get the "cadillac" of matresses for the little ones or if the basic matress will do just fine. I have an older son and recall this matress buying experience being quite painful. Any insight is most appreciated! Thanks, J.
