You Don't Have to Be Neuro Typical to Have a Sense of Humor

My wonderful spectrum child is close to finishing her kindergarten year. She has developed strong math and hand writing skills and shows beginning reading. Not bad for a 6 year old =). But what tugs my heart strings the most is the humor that comes out of my little bearer of Christmas Mornings. My little human started talking in sentences about 3 months ago -literally overnight. So allow me to share some funny stories and share some of yours in turn.

Sunday morning, I was still in bed as my DH was off for the day. I can hear the water running and assumed that my hypo sensory ASD DD is once again playing with the water. I heard my DH yell at her to quit. Heard tiny footsteps running in our bedroom and under her breath my delinquent said, "Three cheers for the troublemaker."

One evening while doing homework, the same DD drew a lump under her letter d. I got a little mad (not really) and told her that this is her homework and to please erase the lump. She said, "It's poop!" Well, this is how we learn our letters: b - long line, big belly....d -long line big butt.

What can I do next?

Funny! Today my daughter says, "Yes sir!" I tell her, "Mommy is a girl so you say, Yes, ma'am." So now is going around yelling "Mommy is a man!" Yay me.

I have 2 of them for you, both care of my oldest (when he was much, much smaller).

The first one he was about 4 years old & the movie The Incredible Hulk was coming out in theatres so there were commercials on tv constantly. One night at dinner, our youngest says, "Daddy is the Hulk!!" & her brother sighs & says, "No, Hailey, Daddy is NOT the hulk." "Yes he is!" "No, he's not, because the Hulk is green & Daddy is brown." This was the first time either of my kids ever mentioned anything about anyone being a certain color so I kind of went with it: "Mike, if Daddy is brown, what color am I?" He thought about it for a while, "You're kind of.....white & pink." "Yup, I absolutely am. So, what color would you say you & Hailey are?" "Ma-maaa....we're brown and white and pink! Don't be silly!" I was pretty impressed that a 4 year old who had never discussed the concept of genetics, sex in general, being mixed-race, ANYTHING like that understood that he was a mixture of his father & I. And, of course, also that the only reason why his father couldn't be considered the Incredible Hulk was because the coloring was wrong, lol.

The other one was when he was about 6 or 7 & when sitting down to dinner I realized I had left the Texas toast in the oven for too long so the undersides were all burned. I kind of scrunched my face all up & wasn't going to eat any when he announced, "I know what you are, Mama! You're black toast intolerant, like on the commercial with the milk!" I was totally confused until I understood that he meant Lactose Intolerant!

And, apparently we have the tv on too much in our home if the only 2 examples I could think of were based on my kids watching & misunderstanding commercials, lol!

I believe it was Andy's third grade year his resource teacher asked what are your goals for this year? Is there something special you want to work on? I need to learn sarcasm! Everyone in my family is laughing and I just don't get it. :)

He did figure it out but like most things he still doesn't understand why it is funny but knows it is. His latest thing is trying to figure out why what he is saying is funny. I think what is most funny is how serious he takes his humor.

I thought your title was odd, first because I hate the term neuro typical. That in itself was at least a couple weeks of jokes until my poor husband couldn't take it anymore and put his foot down. We kept going up to him and asking do you still love us even though we are neuro atypical? or some variation on that theme. The other is we all have our letters, me and my four kids. Hands down anyone that knows us will tell you we are funnier than normal people. :) Sorry but normal is boring. :p

Oh yeah, a friend of mine just reminded me every comedian is not wired right. We rock the humor.
