how do you keep yellow jackets away when having a picnic - actually, it was not a picnic but a visit to a children's zoo and activity place where you could spend the day and buy lunch but there were so many bees flying around it was uncomfortable- I would like to utilize a method of going back this year and trying to keep the bees away

What can I do next?

If it were your own space, I'd suggest hanging a trap. But hey, why not hang one at the zoo too? You can buy disposable traps at any store. You open them up, put the bait inside, and hang from a tree, not close to where you are, but not too far either. The yellowjackets are drawn to the trap instead of your food.

Also, don't sit near the trashcans. I've found they're drawn to the trash and any tables nearby.

Which was it, wasps or bees?

I have never had bees bother me, and I would have to say if bees are bothering you should go inside and not harm any bees. Bees are endangered and they are absolutely necessary for the human race to survive.

What season did you go last time? I find wasps are really annoying in the late summer early fall, so don't have your picnic at that time. Sugary foods and bright colours will help attract wasps, so try not to have sugary foods or wear bright colours.

Google natural ways to repel them. There are so many home made sprays that work on both and other critters too.

Here August is the worst time for wasps so I usually try to avoid eating outside at the zoo and as mentioned near ANY garbage cans. That is the worst. And do not have any sweet drinks so no soda or juice.

In our yard, I have found that those mosquito repellants that create a lilttle smoke work great. When we bbq or something, i light 2 rings and put in the tree, and then light 2 more in clay holders that I place around where we are eating. This usually keeps both away.

Oh, to add NO perfume or scented lotions. Those attract them like crazy.
