Our 4 year old daughter gets chronic yeast infections. Bumpy red itchy infections. She has been seen by her pediatrician several times and prescribed a cream for it. We moved from baths to showers. We try to make sure she thoroughly dries herself after going potty . The infection will clear up or start to clear up with treatment and then she will have another flair up. Ever since she was a baby she has been prone to them. We give her probiotics, try to avoid sugar(except fruit), but the infections never really seem to completely go away or if they do , it's for a few days or so at most and then another flair up. Please advise on what else we can do.

What can I do next?

Yogurt? Chronic yeast infections are generally a sign that something is not balanced in your body. A good look at her diet may be in order.

Poor baby, I know how it is!

Some fruits are very high in sugar, you may want to check on the ones she eats to see if you should cut those out. Starches also turn to sugar, potatoes, rice, and pasta, so those are possible sources, too.

If she's not eating yogurt i would start her eating it as that could make a difference as well.

And, I have to take Diflucan (fluconazole) when I have yeast infections, creams do not work, so you might ask your doctor about it. For adults it's by capsule, for children it is in an oral suspension❤

I've had lots of yeast infections. Some bodies can't handle sugar. I have to cut out bread (unless yeast free) and white flour in addition to sugar. There is a special probiotic that works wonders, I even gave it to my baby when she had thrush. It's called threelac. You can look it up on the internet. Not available in stores.

my mom gave me a book called "the yeast connection". I was in my early teens and would get them all the time. I changed my diet to mostly green veggies and lean meat. Not only did i loose a lot of weight but my acne, dryscalp, dry cracked feet, and a few other issues went away! But at four this would be a bit of an extream diet. Perhaps try a different pediatrician one that will see this is an issue and help you find a solution to the issue and not just a band aid! Good luck.

Only buy her all cotton panties and make sure her pants and shorts fit loosely and are also all cotton. The cotton breathes and will dry if she sweats or dribbles in her panties. You might want to try changing her panties at least once during the day and no panties at night, just loose fitting all cotton jammies.

Hi
My 4 yr old daughter was always getting red and "yeasty" down there with slight odor too... every time we went to the pediatricians office she would say "some kids just smell"..... well that answer is not good enough holy cow! anyways, I decided to treat her like she was super sensitive... shampoo is free and clear of dyes/purfumes, body wash same thing, no baths unless just sitting in plain water. Also I started buying her these organic yogurt drinks at Trader Joes. She drinks one a day in the morning with her breakfast.. And no more problems!!! I will gladly spend the $ on yogurt drinks for her vs. a prescription (which the doctor would never give us anyways so i guess it is a dead subject)...
Not saying that would work for your daughter, but maybe?? Also like someone else mentioned ruling out juvenile diabetes wouldnt hurt.
Good Luck!

My daughter also had chronic yeast infections, and she was about 3 years old when a different pediatrician examined her and found her vagina had not fully opened. The smaller opening was holding in moisture and bacteria, causing frequent yeast infections. He prescribed a Nickel something cream to be applied over several weeks...this slowly dissolves the skin that should have separated before birth. It was mildly uncomfortable for her, but we found applying it at night and offering her a cold press worked well. May be worth asking...

Hi C.,

You said the only sugar is occasional fruit. White potatoes, rice, breads, etc are also full of sugar. Also know that just because it seems to clear up doesn't mean it's gone. If it is showing ANYWHERE, then her little body is eaten up with it. It can take up to a year to get rid of yeast completely if your doing EVERYTHING right. The yeast needs to die of starvation. Even a little bit of "nourishment" will kick start it to breed all over again.

There is a supplement called Tanalbit by Intensive Nutrition that works wonders with yeast but I haven't ever looked into whether it is okay for little ones. The website is www.intensivenutrition.com if you'd like to do some investigating.

Hope this helps!

M.
