Frequent Yeast Infections

When I was pregnant with my son, I had maybe one yeast infection, but it seems that ever since I had him (he's nearly 18 months) I get them ALL the time. I thought at first it was my birth control, but I've stopped it and still get them. I get them every month it seems around my period. We don't have insurance, so I've only been able to ask the nurse practitioner at the health dept about it. She suggested I might have HERPES which is ridiculous b/c neither I nor my husband has ever had sex with any one else, so that wasn't helpful. Has anyone else dealt with this? Please help! I'm going crazy here!

Oh, and I've tried switching soaps and lots of other things like that, and it hasn't helped. :(

What can I do next?

Thanks to everyone! I never expected so many responses! And it was so nice (in a weird way) to know that other people were having the same problem as me. I thought I was just a freak. I'm planning on trying lots of the suggestions and hopefully it will get better. *crosses fingers* Thanks, again! :D

sounds like ya may be passing it back and forth.....the men dont need any cream for it, he just needs to wash very very good, and you need to make sure you get the 7 day inserts or apill by mouth froma doctor. finish the full dose of meds before sex again, that way you are sure to not startthe passing it back and forth.
personal note: after i had my first child, i seemed to get them more often too. not every month though, watchout for sented tampons, colord toilet paper, silk panties, antibiotics, and start eating some yogurt with the live cultures in it!!!!!

I went thru the same thing with getting a yeast infection every month before my period. My mother in law is a naturalist and was treating me with a foot detox for another problem and I noticed that the months I got these I ceased to have the yeast problem. My chiropracter has the machine in his office, the first one is free than it is $200 for 10 visits. It is $20 per session. I also started to get hydrotherapy and they pulled a lot of yeast out of my intestine. That was $65. I now only do one of these if I start getting itchy again. It has been 4 months and I haven't had any problems.

Hi J., I get those a lot as well. Usually, its from a systemic infection. Have you been on antibiotics lately? Crave sugar, pasta, bread? Have a lower than normal temp (96-97 deg) If so, google "candidiasis". Increasing your diet with probiotics or a low-sugar yogurt (Walmart's got a good organic one I use all the time) will also help. I hope this helps. If you need any more tips or tricks, you can email me :}

So many things can cause them! Wear cotton underwear,no bubble baths, check the laundry soap. I understand without insurance it's expensive but if these keep coming back you really need to have an OBGYN check you out. It could be as simple as a vitamin deficency. There is definetely an underlying cause. Bite the bullet & go to the OBGYN ! If you have a health food store near check w/them. They usually have very knowledgeable people there and probably have some printed materal on it. I checked in my Natural Healing book & if you want info on it send me a private message.

First cut all sugar from you diet including starch (pasta, potatoes and rice) and fruits with a high sugar content like bananas and strawberries...yeast feeds on sugar. Go to the drug store and get Acidophillis (not sue how to spell it) and take a lot of it.. Eating sugar free yogurt will help. Drink a lot of water and eat fresh veggies.

Good luck!!

I had a problem with yeast about 2 years ago. I was under a LOT of stress, I wasn't getting enough rest, and was not eating right. All that contributed to a horrible yeast infection that came and seemed almost constant. I found relief from the symptoms once some of the stress I was under subsided and I began taking better care of myself. Hope this is of some help. I will be praying for you! ~M.

You have typical symptoms of a fungal problem contributed by diet, birth control pills, and antibiotics. Get the book by Doug Kaufmann "The Fungus Link". Go on an antifungal diet. At least for two weeks or longer depending on your condition, eliminate all sugar in any form, even sugary fruits. No white flour, white rice, grains. Drink plenty of filtered water. Eat plenty of raw or lightly steamed vegetables. Only lean meat baked or grilled. No dairy products. Get on antifungal supplements like Seagate's olive leaf extract or North American Oil & Spice oil of oregano, or garlic, and or capryllic acid.

Hi J.!
I had this same problem only mine was before I had kids! I swear I got one every other month and they drove me CRAZY, so honey I feel your pain!! My doctor said to try this and that (fragrance fee soap, FF lotions, not douching (this will definately give them to you b/c it washes away the good bacteria that you need to fight off infections), cloth panties, etc. None of this helped me, although if I did these things, I got them more frequently. I honestly think its a hormonal thing b/c once I had my kids I stopped having them (haven't gotten one since). I have a 4 yr old and an 11 mon. old. You need more accidopholus (good bacteria) in your body. Its in yogurt(thats why they always say to eat yogurt). You can also buy some accidopholus pills at a pharmacy. These did help me. As far as the nurse saying it may be herpes, that is ridiculous. I think you would know if you had them and if she really thought that, then she should have tested you to rule it out. I'm sorry your having these issues, I hope this will help!
Thanks!

Birth controls pills tend throw off the balance of good bacteria that fight yeast overgrowth. Even if you quit taking them you are still off balance. There is alot of info on the internet on yeast overgrowth approaches. Find one that suits you. My suggestion would be to avoid suger and gluten foods for a while. Start eating yogurt not sweetened or take probiotics. Grapefruit Seed Extract is a good yeast fighter too. You can get it at a health food store.

She drank wayyyyyy too many cokes and we beleived, this may have been "one" of the causes. Try cutting down on caffiene if you drink it and instead drink alot of water and Cranberry juice to help flush out your system. If the matter doesn't clear up soon, please try and make an appointment to see a doctor at the free clinic. Stay healthy to raise that sweet baby of yours.

Frequent yeast infections are due to an imbalance in your body. Switching soaps, etc. can be helpful. You might also go to a health food store and pick up a good probiotic. The latest recommendation is to take 9 per day for several days. They will probably have other recommendations as well for herbs, etc., that are helpful. (There is an herb called Pau D' Arco that comes to mind.) Recurring infections can also be because you and your husband are passing them back and forth. Men can have no symptoms, but he should be treated (monistat cream or something similar) each time you are treated. Diet is very important, so eliminating all sugars and processed foods, and even grains, for a period of time can be helpful. You can also pick up an over the counter yeast infection detector, just so that you are sure you are dealing with yeast and not some sort of bacterial infection. I hope this helps!

First! I have to comment on your "things that I love" in your about me. Grammar - me too! You don't see that too often so I had to say something about it :o)
So, from one nerd to another...

Stop switching soaps because that is going to make your problem worse. Your body went through a ton of hormone changes during pregnancy and post partum so having problems like this isn't all that uncommon. I HIGHLY doubt you have herpes based on the information you've provided. I t could be a combination of your pH levels being off balance and your hormones. pH testing strips are fairly inexpensive so you could pick some of those up (or I could mail you some of what I have here). The hormones is a tad more complicated. If you wanted to get that tested it would cost around $150 for a saliva test. I do have a self assesment on one of my websites (I do women's health seminars) that you could use to see if hormones might be the culprit. I talk about pH on the site but the main focus is hormones.

You also have the normal home remedies used to avoid yeast infections like eating yogurt and drinking cranberry juice. I used to get yeast infections all the time & I don't like either cranberry juice or yogurt - go figure.

Good luck!

It may not be herpes but it could possibly be diabetes. One of the signs of diabetes is frequent yeast infections. I would have your blood checked at your county health clinic. It usually is a free service or very low cost judged by your income( maybe $5.00??)

Stay away from powders, sprays or even the scented pads if you use them during your period they can cause yeast infections as well. Wear cotton underwear as well.

Good luck and know it is uncomfortable and hope it works out and you find what is causing it!

I too have had my share of ongoing yeast infections. Stay away from the use of sprays, powders, etc. They are very toxic. Your body is its own cleaning system, so there is no need for douching either. I would recommend Acidophilis. Whenever you take antibiotics, it not only kills the bad bacteria but it also kills the good bacteria. Acidophilis is good bacteria. We need the good bacteria to keep the candida (yeast) from invading our bodies and causing infections. Acidophilis can be found in yogurt, and many other foods now. It can also be purchased in pill form, which is what I take. You can find it in the refrigerator section at your local health food store. Limit the amount of sugar, fruit juices, and alcohol in your diet. Acidophilis works for me, I haven't had a yeast infections in 4 years.

I had the same problem I used to get them all the time Then I got a real bad one and I just couldn't get rid of it with over the counter meds or prescription diflucan. I started to research natural options on the internet and found out about Tea Tree Oil and Yogurt, this worked and I haven't had one since. You make a douche with yogurt and a drop or two of tea tree oil be careful not to over do it because this stuff is potent. I would also take a bath with a cap full of tea tree oil in my water then do the douche right before bed and it stopped the itch and it is very cool because I keep the yogurt refrigerated and just wash and refill your douche bottle and keep in the frig do this for a week and it will clear up if it is a yeast infection. You need to also eat yogurt during the day just make sure you use fat free or sugar free yogurt for all of this more sugar makes it worse.

The same happened with me after the birth of one of my children. I began to cut out a lot of sugars as well as eat more yogurt. Taking showers instead of baths helped, as well as not wearing colored undies. Pants that were a bit snug were put away for while, too. My practitioner also said that this happens many times after children are born---our "balance" of the right kind of bacteria becomes a delicate thing.

I would also ask them to test for something called vaginitis (or sounds similar to that). The symptoms are very similar to a yeast infection, but requires a different medical treatment (not yeast infection medicine).

This is so frustrating. I hope you find some help for it soon!!!

Hi J.,
Boy, yeast infections are miserable. First of all, change your underwear to panties with a 100% cotton crotch. Keep your peri-area as dry as possible which may mean frequent panty changes. Grocery stores have medications (ie:Lotremin) on the shelf for home treatment. This is a little sensitive, but you can be reinfected by your husband if he also has monilia (the yeast). Finally, one of the gyn's I saw many years ago advised me not to drink a lot of sugared drinks. I know that yeast likes sugar but for the life of me I have no idea how that would relate to the vaginal area. In the meantime, if these symptoms persist, see a physician. He might have to put you on some Flagyl (anti-fungal) by mouth. Good luck sweetheart and God bless. A. B.

You have gotten lots of good advice as far as the natural route to treatment. I agree! Once the yeast infection is gone, I suggest staying on a good probiotic every day. I do that myself and haven't had a yeast infection in years. If I do have to take an antibiotic, I take more of the probiotic while I'm on the medicine, and for about a week afterward.

Using chemical-free soap and laundry detergent could also help, at least in that it won't irritate the area further.

Our local health food store has tea tree suppositories that work great for yeast infections, too. Maybe you can find them.

Frequent yeast infections are the result of too much yeast (Candida) in your intestine. Usually vaginal yeast infections are the first thing you notice, but you may be having signs of irritable bowel syndrome, problems with digesting foods, or a lot more allergies also. You need to re-populate the friendly bacteria we all have to have in our large intestine. Those bacteria are Acidophilus and Bifidus mainly. They are found in live-culture yogurts & buttermilk, but may not be in adequate numbers since you are already having a hard time. Yeast are crowded out by these bacteria, which also help get rid of foods we couldn't digest well, and keep our gas and stools from being stinky. Many of the products you buy for this are already dead on the shelf. They have to be refrigerated to keep any of them alive. I recommend Shaklee's OptiFlora system to give back enough bacteria to make a real difference. It is triple-encapsulated, doesn't need refrigeration, and is guaranteed to give you 250,000 each of these bacteria.
http://www.shaklee.net/janet_morain/product/Optiflora will tell you more about these products. Hope you get lasting help!

This may sound a little strange, but if you wear nylon underwear and or panty hose all the time, it holds the moisture and warmth from that area, which is the perfect breeding ground for a yeast infection. You should try switching to all cotton underwear and no hose for a while. Maybe it will make a difference. It worked for my daughter and she is grown with daughters of her own.

just before your period, your pH changes just enough to get yeast infections. Frankly, it's hell to get rid of them. One course of anitibotics for a bacterial infection and what you thought was gone, will be back. Discharge from yeast is white and chunky (if you have it bad enough). Herpes hurts a lot....

I used to load up on yogart (to eat) not to douche with. Some douches do change the vaginal pH that yeast does not like, but I'm usually hesitant to use too much "stuff." Vinegar douches? I don't remember...

I also use cotton lined underwear to keep area as dry as possible. And I wash my underwear in really hot water.

I have also found that if I dring 32oz of water a day and 1 container of yogurt it seems to help. Do you also get Bateria invetions as well? 1. try reducing the sugar in your diet

2. take acidophilus and try miso soups

3. are you using any sweetened lotions, gels, creams, etc. during sex with your husband? It's amazing that those companies would do it, but sometimes they put some form of sugar or another in them, and bada bing - yeast infection.

4. to clear one up when you've got it, try boric acid capsules. You can probably find them at a health food store. Much cheaper than monistat, and FAR better for you. Just don't overdo it, or you'll have an imbalance of bacteria because all of the yeast are totally gone, and that can feel uncomfortable, too.

Are you certain it is a yeast infection? There is more than one type of vaginal infection, but they have similar symptoms - irritation, itchiness, discharge etc. If its bacterial, you would need an antibiotic - the yeast creams will do nothing.
I completely understand about not having insurance and wanting to avoid unnessecary MD visits, but you might need to confirm if this is yeast, bacteria, or something else.
If it is yeast, you might want to try using several rounds of the 7-day suppositories. When I was in my early 20's I got one yeast infection after another, and I wound up having to use the suppositories for a month before it cleared up. My (husband) and I also had to stop using condoms because they were part of the problem - latex sensitivity. I haven't had a yeast infection in nearly 10 years now.
Also, when I went to the doc to confirm it was infact recourrent yeast, they checked to make sure I wasn't diabetic, as yeast infections are a symptom of undiagnosed diabetes. That may be something you might need to be tested for, but in the meantime consider taking excess sugar and carbs out of your diet, and eat yogurt with active yeast cultures daily.

First of all, don't go back to that nurse practitioner!

Second, find information on candida overgrowth. Excellent resources include anything written by Willian Crook, MD.

Basically, pregnancy increases estrogen levels, which can increase candida systemically. If you've had any antibiotics near or during pregnancy, it increases it even more. If you're on birth control pills, use another method because it also increases estrogen in many women. Good luck.

I had been married 21 years before I was diagnosed with genital herpes...I, too, thought it was a yeast infection.

Either one of you could have contracted herpes and not known it. Even though neither of you have had sex with anyone else the virus can be contracted by kissing someone who has it.

Apparently, according to my gynecologist, it can lay dormant for years and then something triggers it and you start to have outbreaks.

There is an over the counter pill that has worked well for me and is a lot more reasonably priced than what the doctor might prescribe. It is called Herplex and is sold at Walmart.

Hope this helps.

1. go to dhs today and apply for health insurance for your family. Sooner care is there for families working hard but there's just not enough.
2. Is your husband circumsized? The natural bateria of an uncircumsized man can cause yeast infections/irritation in some women. Even though it never happened before.
3. You are reinfecting yourself everytime you have intercourse. HE will have little to no symptoms but if you don't both treat yourselfs. It will never get cleared up.
4. You have got to go somewhere and get an exam and a pap and insure that it is a yeast infection. Not a bacterial infection. The treatment for one will agrevate the other.
5. start eating 3 yougurts per day. This will help balance the ph in your body.
6. GO to Akins health food store and ask them for some probiotics for vaginal balance. They will have something to help you get your body back in alignment.
7. In the mean time no sex or use a condumn even though you may be on birth control.

I hope this all helps. been down this road and it is so frustrating. call the OU medical clinic and try to get an appointment, I believe they are still sliding scale.

I have been in your shoes and it is no fun. if this is not yeast, you will need a different medicine. Now that you know your body is prone to yeast. Anytime you take an antibiotic you will need to ask for something to PREVENT a yeast infection. I get one now even if just the one preventive dose they give you for minor surgery.

If you are using pads or pantiliners with this "great" new product that is also in UNSCENTED products, you may want to find one that doesn't have it. It is usually in small print, so look good.

I haven't gotten another yeast infection since I stopped using them. In the mean time, you might want to get some acidophilus and eat yogurt every day.

I hope this helps, because I know how miserable you must be! Oh, and I didn't have herpes either <trying not to roll my eyes>.

You said you have tried switching soaps, but have you tried Dove soap. I kept yeast infections all the time until I switched to Dove. A friend informed me that she switched and no longer got them, so I tried it and it worked for me. Dr.'s recommend soaps without perfume. Good luck!

P.S. Eat Yogurt!

At one time I was having the same problem, but mine turned out to be bacterial infections instead of yeast, a few were due to certain brands of laundry soaps and body washes (I can't use those down there at all) but regular body soaps haven't bothered me. A friend of mine even went so far as to use all of the feminine products like the wipes, washes, bar soaps, powders, and sprays. I went to the doctor, had one treatment of antibiotics, changed a few hygeine routines and haven't had one since. I was using one brand or another of moise wipes like Summer's Eve or Cottonelle, but honestly, baby wipes are cheaper and work just the same! I buy the unscented Parent's Choice brand at Wal-Mart and use them after I use the restroom, especially after a BM. Hope this helps.

Try eating yogurt everyday for a while. sometimes when you are on a antibiotic for a while it kills all your good bacteria too. there are good bacteria in yogurt.

yeast infections can come from something as simple as your detergent, shampoo, bath oils/soaps, dryer sheets, etc. the question is: have you recently changed any of your usual routine with anything that you use on a daily/regular basis.?. most people do not realize that they are not only scrubbing away the bad bacteria, but the good bacteria that is needed as well. also, herpes virus has 11 different strains....and is contagious thru a variety of ways- not just on a sexual level- as many seem to think. there is a "clinical trial" being done on herpes. call them and speak with them about your symptoms. if you call - you can remain anonymous, and still get peace of mind. call 479=221-5816 -or email: ____@____.com

I've read that if you eat or drink a lot of sweets- you can get yeast infections. This includes breads and beer. Its the yeast in those. Also- take acidophillus capsules everyday. And eat yogurt. Some women are just more sensitive. You can keep buying the over the counter meds and being miserable. But - sounds like you need prevention too. At least for a time til your body gets balanced. Good luck. J.

I work at a gynecologist's office and you may have bacterial vaginitis. You might try asking your nurse practioner about that. I'm pretty sure they feel the same. If it's not that then you may just be really sensitive and even detergent could be irritating it.

It's common to have symptoms that mimic yeast infection from eating the wrong diet. White sugar, white flour... but the biggest culprit these days is High Fructose Corn Syrup. Since so many moms are reporting these symptoms (I know you say that you eat good food) I just have to throw this idea out there.

J.,

I am right there with you. It seems like every time I have intimacy with my hubby I get a yeast infection. And after swimming. And before my period. And if I use a tampon. And if I take a single dose of an antibiotic. I am going INSANE with this! I had a pap smear, it turned out normal, but the doctor confirmed that I did indeed have a yeast infection, and I took Diflucan. It didn't work. Then I used the cream, and then the suppositories. I even bought cream and told my husband to rub it all over his stuff! If you get any good suggestions, please let me know. My gynecologist said that some women are just more prone to yeast infections (I've been getting them almost constantly since I was 16). I did use Summer's Eve hygiene spray for a while and when I quit using it, I did see a difference. I use Summer's Eve feminine wash for sensitive skin and that seems to have made a bit of a difference as well. I really wish I could be helpful, but I have the same problem! It's maddening! If you find a solution, please have some mercy on a kindred spirit and send me a message!

Good luck and Thanks!

A.

You have certainly received a lot of different advice! I have had this too with both of my children, from birth until about 15 months. I was able to stop the recurring infection with my second born sooner by switching to an antibacterial bar soap to wash my vaginal area instead of a body wash. I also do not use a loofa in that area. Also, I noticed that I would get an infection after shaving my bikini line. I started using a new, clean razor in that area each time and that solved the problem. Yeast grows under your arms, behind your knees, etc. When you shave those areas and then your bikini area, you transfer that yeast. The only other thing I did was make sure that my underwear (cotton) was washed in hot water without bleach and with no socks in the same load. And, I did not wear underwear to bed... just don't share that with your hubby. [Wink, wink.]

Be sure to wear all cotton underwear. Also, at night don't wear any if that is possible. During your periods do not use tampons and try to remember to change your pad very often. If you have used an over the counter treatment, a 7 day course of medicine is preferable. Also, are you sure it is a yeast infection and not a bacterial infection? There is also an over the counter test that will let you know. If none of these things help, look up homeopathic treatments on the internet---these are usually helpful and will keep you from the doctor's office.

I feel your pain, I am prone to them too, especially in the summer time. I have started taking a suppliment, it is a little expensive but it works...I haven't had one since I have been taking it. It's a probiotic (live good bacteria) called Pearls. They are super small pills, about the size of a BB and I get them at Akins. However, I think any probiotic suppliment would help you out if you wanted to try something that costs less. Also try eating yogurt everyday, it has the good bacteria too.

Has your husband been treated while you were being treated? I have found that although men do not show signs of yeast infections and cannot harbor it like we do, they can repeatedly transfer the infection back to you. You should take the cream and apply it to his shaft at the same time you are treating yourself for the infection. See if that doesn't work. It worked for me, maybe it will work for you.

Call your local health dept and see if they can do a free or low price health exam. I have diabetes and when my blood sugar is out of whack I get yeast infections. Also whenever I'm on antibiotics or use off brand tampons or pads. Look on the internet for info on yeast infections with candida or diabetes, it could be a sugar problem that can be treated by controlling carbs.

I have heard that sometimes a man can get a yeast infection and not know it. Then he gives it back to you and you end up passing it back and forth. Hope this helps. Get your husband checked out at the doctor. Good Luck!

Hi J.,
Do you take lots of Hot Baths?? If so-that will upset the natural flora down there...
I think the nurse at the health dept is a little off base to suggest that frequent yeast infections are from a V.D.
BUT-you could try adding Vinegar (plain white) to your bath water or if you use bubble bath/oils-Stop that.
I had the same problem and found (Trial and error) vinegar helps restore the natural acidity down there and bubbles and scented oils are unfortunately out for me.
I also stopped wearing underwear unless it's "that time"-I know TMI, but it truly helps to get air down there. You can get yeast infections from getting too hot-baths and underwear holding the heat in...
I hope this helps.
C.

I used to have this same problem but I started taking Lactobacillus acidophilus and I may get 1 yeast infection a year. Also, sleeping in NO underwear helps also.
