Would You Size Up?

My baby is going to be 2 soon! She needs a new bathing suit, but she is a big girl. Based on the size chart, she is borderline for a size 3, tall enough and just a pound light. I assume she will have a grow spurt in the next month, as my kids usually tend to become like giants around their bday. But it seems strange to think a new 2 could be in a size 3? She was 99% at birth, and has consistently been in the 90%. She fits her current size two perfectly.

Would you buy the 3, and let it be a little big?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I usually size up but needed some reassurance today. Thank you!

I bought the three. I just hope it isn't too big because it's for now, as we do swim at the Y.

i don't really get this.
my kids, from birth on, almost never seemed to fit into the 'age' brackets of babies' and children's clothing. and the fit varies wildly from brand to brand.
i bought them clothes that fit. the numbers on the labels didn't mean squat to me.

The sizes aren't necessarily supposed to line up with age.

Yes, for sure size up, especially knowing her history of growth spurts around her birthday. Not to mention you won't be using bathing suits in IL for a few months!

I would go up a size. Swim suits are on the snug side anyway and if there is any kind of growth spurt you'll have room to grow and not outgrow it by the time stores are picked clean of inventory. I always buy the bigger size when they are close to the edge and have never gone wrong.
My kids have rarely been the size that matches their age. My 5 year old is growing into an 8 right now. Her height is off the charts and her weight is in perfect proportion to her height. My about to turn 14 year old is in an 18. His height is also off the charts and his weight is in proportion to his height. They are both going to be very tall adults, it runs in the family. The whole idea that their age should match their size is based on averages. With that said, I am finding that everything is being cut on the small size which doesn't help much.

Tag sizes often do not correlate with ages. Always use physical measurements when you're determining a size that you can't try on in person.

When my husband worked a helpline for a clothing catalog company, it was common to get calls like, "My son is 7 years old. Does he wear a size 7 pants?" Then they'd get all crabby when he'd ask for measurements like waist or inseam. "I don't know! Why can't you just tell me what size my kid is?!"

Yes

I have a kiddo who is only in the 60% for height/weight. He is 3 (will turn 4 next week) and I had to buy all his winter stuff in a size 5 because when we did shopping in October he was almost outgrowing the size 4's.

My general rule in ordering stuff for my kids is if they are at the mid-mark for the suggested weight I went up a size. At least until they stop growing constantly.

Yes. I thought it was normal for kids to wear a size larger and my kids are normal sized, but wore one size larger than their age. My 3 yr old nephew is a solid boy and wears a 5T.

Yes, i'd buy the 3. If a 2 fits perfectly she will quickly out grow it as youas you said. I always buy the next size up if current clothes are somewhat close to being snug. The size actually has little to do with age. My 3 1/2 yo granddaughter wears a 4. The size charts are based on the size of the average child. Their percentage on a growth chart is in the middle range. You daughter is close to the top. This means she needs a larger size for the most part.

a bit large now , but she will be able to wear it for several months.

Yup. I always buy up. Right now my 5 almost 6 year old is wearing medium/larges depending on the brand and the cut. She wears a size 10 jeans and has for a while because of the way she is built. She is just a super tall kid. She wears a size 1 shoe probably closer to 1.5 or 2 but we haven'tgotten new shoes in a while. And she is 50 inches tall.

Sure. She is still growing. Keep a size 2 just in case but more than likely the 3 will be the best bet to make it through the swimming season.

I would definitely buy the 3. I think a lot of suits run small. Plus, you have a few months before summer.

They grow so fast it's not even funny.
If you by something that fits them now, you'll blink twice and they'll have outgrown it.
If it's a style I like, I get a size up and then another another size up so you'll be covered when she out grows it in a few months.
