Ziplocs are the answer! If you're really worried, double bag it. I use the 1 gallon size and then use them throughout the trip for wet bathing suits, my kid's seashell collection, etc.
So three ounces is the limit for liquids in carry-ons. We are going to be traveling for quite a while, and that won't be enough shampoo. Have you been packing the big bottle of shampoo in the luggage and hoping it doesn't leak or have you been buying some unknown brand when you get at your international destination?

I have packed it in my luggage before. I just put them in a large ziplock bag and it's fine. Sometimes they leak, but at least it's in a bag and not all over everything
I'd either use the shampoo at destination hotels, buy shampoo at destinations, or get some solid bar shampoo.

I put a big bottle in my luggage. I put it in a ziplock in case of leaks.
I would buy a new bottle of shampoo, never opened; tape it shut just to be on the safer side; put it in a zip lock; and put it in my luggage.
On the other hand, it's kinda fun trying to read another language on labels as you try to buy shampoo at your destination. ;^)
Like everyone else said ZIPLOCS! But I have also found that a completely full bottle is more likely to leak. I don't know if it is the temp or the lack of air pressure, but I think it expands at high altitude. If you don't have a completely full bottle there is space to expand and it doesn't have to leak. Even without full bottles I always pack all liquids and toiletries in baggies, just in case.
I take my shampoo and conditioner with me in the checked luggage.
I put anything that can possibly leak into Ziploc bags. No problems and we've been regular travelers for business and pleasure for many years.
I pack in a ziploc bag. A new bottle that is sealed is not likely to leak anyway, but I pack in between layers of clothes if the luggage is at all soft sided. You can also find out from your travel agent or AAA or your hotel what American brands may be available where you are traveling.
I pack big bottles in grocery store plastic bags and checked them in.
I put my shampoo bottles in ziploc bags - separately - so JUST IN CASE they open, I don't have them mixed together.
I went to Bali several years ago - which is a small indonesian island. we were in the middle of the island in the jungle and stopped at a "market" to get some fruit.
They had suave shampoo and conditioner.
Unless you are going somewhere CRAZY remote they will probably have all the name brand products. You can recognize the logo....even if it's a different language.
Also - unless you are camping your hotel should have shampoo, no?
That being said.... I have used ziploc as said below and never had a problem. Now that I am old (hahahaha) I am a fan of the 2-n-1 shampoos.... less to pack and one less step for everyone while they are getting ready.
Have a good trip
We either buy some or put them double bagged (freezer bags) in the luggage.
I either pack my big bottle of shampoo (in a ziplock bag - never had a problem). I put the ziplock back in a side pocket of my luggage so it's not with my clothes. Or I buy one when I get there. You could always double bag it if you are worried.
Yep, I do it all the time. Put it in a ziploc bag and you'll be fine.
I'd buy at destination. A few weeks or months using an unfamiliar brand isn't going to matter much.
You can find shampoo everywhere; unless you need a very special kind of shampoo, then fill as many travel- sized shampoo bottles as you can with your own shampoo, and put them in a ziplock in your checked baggage. Put just one in your carry on.
When you travel overseas, it is better packing light, take with you just the necessary toiletries and clothing, and make room for the souvenirs and unique stuff! (an advice from someone who has enjoyed traveling for years....)
Enjoy your trip!

I did this recently. My checked bag was randomly searched after it was checked. They left the little TSA notification tag in there. And, they opened my bottle of shampoo and didn't screw the lid back on tight. Yes, it was in a ziploc bag, but that didn't get completely sealed either. There was slippery shampoo all over my suitcase. Very hard to clean it out of the fabric and corners of my bag. At least it smells good but it's slippery, sticky and concentrated.
Now, I bring enough shampoo/conditioner/lotion to get by til I can stop by a store for a larger bottle. If I were going to an international destination, I'd make a point of buying some toiletries there, and take a chance on bringing them back with me in my checked baggage so I can use and enjoy the rest as a souvenir of my trip.
I put bottles of stiff in checked luggage ALL the time. Put it in a bag of sorts. I've never had an issue. Shampoo, conditioner, perfume, mousse, lotion, etc.
I always pack my shampoo, body wash in my checked luggage. I make though it's tightly closed and then double bag it with grocery store plastic bags. The open end of bag 1 goes towards the closed end of bag 2. So on the rare cases where it does leak, it's contained within the plastic bags. I travel regularly and have been doing this for years now have never had them spill on clothes. ziplock would be a good idea too.
I put a very small amount of our regular shampoo (we can all use the same one) in a travel bottle and pack it to use for the first few days we're overseas, but then I .buy at destination for the rest of the trip. Unless you have some kind of hair or scalp issue that requires something special, or your hair is sensitive and dries out if you change products, it's really not worth it to pack big bottles of....anything. Full-sized bottles of hair product take up a LOT of room and weigh a lot too. That's space in your luggage that could be filled with other things! If you just must take your own brand, take only enough to last while you're there so you run out by the end of your trip -- it's not efficient to take shampoo overseas only to lug it back home. Again, that's space and weight that could be used for something far, far more interesting like a gift or souvenir!
We go overseas every year to the same place so we have the advantage of knowing the brands there fairly well. Though you will indeed find many of the same brands all over the world, there's no guarantee of that , and the formulations for the same name brand can actually be a bit different in other areas of the world. So don't expect that a bottle that says "Brand X" in another country is going to be just like your Brand X here at home.
That's why if you're sensitive you can carry your own but I'd never carry a full bottle -- repack just enough into a travel bottle. You can use much less shampoo than you may realize!
Yes, just put it in a zip lock in case it leaks (although mine never have).
I always take large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash....... I've never had any problems. However, I seal them in a zip-lock just in case.
(I've flown at least 8 round trips in the last 3 years...)
I seldom travel with a new bottle. I use some of it up first.
Then I press on the sides of the bottle to take some of the air out and leave the bottle slightly dented in. Then I screw the top on tight. By squeezing the bottle a little bit you allow the air some space to expand with and not bring the bottle to its maximum stretch limit. By doing this, I've never had one leak or the top pop off. I know my description may not be the best, but I hope you understand.
Good luck to you and yours.
most hotels offer shampoo and conditioner. i don't ever bring that with me.
but if i had to i would just bring a bunch of small trial size bottles
I always do this....3oz never seems to be enough. just put anything that may leak or puncture into gallon ziplock bags...works like a charm
